Zev Taublieb gives college soccer recruits three tips for their first call with a coach: don't treat it like a job interview, research the coach and ask personal questions, and explain how you fit their system. He ends with an invitation to comment "call" to schedule your own conversation.
This is where most players eff up their first call with a college coach. And so don't do these 3 things. Number 1, do not think this is an interview. This is to find out if you get along with the coach and if you're a professional person. Did you learn things about them? Did you look them up? This is a conversation. This is not a job interview at this stage. This is them wanting to get to know you. Number 2, you must have done research regarding them. Do not ask questions about do they want you for the team, or are you going to be their best player, or how much money you're going to get. You should ask them questions about them. Why did they start playing soccer? Why do they start liking the school? Why are they interested in you? Ask them about questions about their life to show them that you're an adult and a grown-up, not some high school kid that just wants them to ask how much money you're going to get. Show that you're a genuine person and you care about their lives. And finally, number 3, if you can compliment their playing style, make sure you've them play soccer. Their team— college coaches don't make a lot of money traditionally, and all they do is for the love of the game. And frankly, recruiting, while an important part of it, is typically why not most of them got started. They got started so they could coach their team in soccer games. And because of that, if you can complement their playing style or put a player in your position, you will go from here to here in their recruiting list. If you want more help playing college soccer, comment the word "call" and you can schedule a call with us and your parents. Make sure your parents come with you on the call. Talk to you soon.
