Maddie Foxhaven, a soccer player from Calabasas, committed to Duke by playing LAFC at the ECNL level, attending ID camps, and emailing coaches relentlessly. Duke's academics and athletics sealed it. She starts preseason in a week.
What does it take to play for Duke women's soccer? We're gonna find out right now. Tell us your name and, uh, where are you from?
Uh, I'm Maddie Foxhaven and I'm from Calabasas, California.
And what club team did you play for?
Uh, I played for LAFC.
And what level was LAFC?
Um, ECNL.
And how long were you playing in ECNL for, or did you do that your whole life?
I've done that— well, we had DA before, but then we switched to ECNL, so ever since ECNL became like after DA.
And you decided on Duke. There may have been some other schools. What made you eventually decide on Duke?
Duke for me was the best academic and athletic school in the country. So when they offered, I was like, after the other.
So in order to get recruited by Duke, did you send them an email? Did you go to showcases? Tell us how the recruiting process worked for you.
Yeah, I went to, I think, 2 ID camps, and I made sure to email a lot.
And whoa, whoa, 2 ID camps?
Yeah, I went to 2, and they were not a waste of money. Um, no, I mean, the two ID camps, they were interested, but it really comes down to performing in the games and showcases because that was really like— you can do really good in ID camps, but you got to make sure you perform like when they come to watch you play. So make sure you send the emails to make sure they come out to see you and then perform when they do.
You are going into preseason with Duke in a week or so, you said?
Yeah, on Monday.
Did they give you a fitness packet?
Yeah, they did give me a fitness packet, so make sure you do conditioning before you go in.
