A soccer player's highlight reel needs a standout play in the first five seconds, then a 12-second self-interview with your name and contact info. Coaches watch maybe the first 30 to 60 seconds, so pack your best goals and assists there. Split a longer video into two separate reels and send them in follow-up emails instead of repeating clips.
A highlight video is your resume. Here is the perfect formula for your highlight video. In the first 0 to 5 seconds, it must be a goal from outside the box, and that's for almost any position. For goalkeepers, show us an incredible save, shot stopping specific. In the next 5 to 30 seconds, we want a 12-second self-interview with your information on the side, clear as day of who you are. Then get us back to the soccer clips. For 30 to 60 seconds, show us your best moments. Don't worry about order, don't worry about tackles really, and don't worry about clearances off the line. Show us your best moments. These are usually goals, assists, dribbles, or attacking moments. The rest of the video should be reiterating what we've seen already. We need at least 2 minutes and 30 seconds, and coaches mostly won't watch it. They'll really only get to about the 30 to 60 second mark before they're going to make a decision on do I should come to your game, should I come to your camp, should I have you send me more video. It is better to have a really short video that's awesome than a long video that's average. And remember, coaches never want to see the same clip twice. So instead of giving them a 4-minute video which they never get to see the second half of it, split your into 2 different videos. Then send the 1 video the first time, and then you're gonna need to follow up because they're gonna have to talk to you more often. Send them a second email with the new video. Then take your 4-minute video and cut it into slices of 1 minute and post that on social media. So now your 4 to 6-minute video just turned into 6 more pieces of content to follow up with college coaches.
