A high school athlete committed to a university through Early Decision 2 after a coach promised a roster spot, but the coach went silent for weeks. An athletic director transition had left the coach unsure about his job, and the athlete eventually withdrew from the program rather than attend.

We had a student who committed to a school. I'm gonna keep the school's name undisclosed. And the coach told this student, and we have it in writing, we even have it recorded, that, "Hey, you have a spot on our team if you do ED2." And ED2 is binding, so if you do ED2, you can't really get out of it. So the student was ready to go to this school. He commits to the school, he does ED2, coach says congratulations, and then the kid doesn't hear from the coach for like 3 weeks, a month. We're going into June, the season starts in August. You know, now the student is getting concerned. So the student reaches out to the coach and still doesn't hear from anybody, nothing. As it turns out, the athletic director was changing and so the coach wasn't sure if their job was gonna stay in place and so they didn't reach back out to the student. And the student was like, what is going on? Like, I committed, like, what is happening? And it was really uncomfortable. And it actually led to the point where the student felt no longer comfortable going to that school and will be leaving and no longer be going to that program because of the way he felt the coach was treating him.
