A college soccer scout watches his brother play center midfielder against adult men and explains what he's actually looking for: full-touch video over highlight reels, multiple games not one, and how D1 coaches evaluate in person while D2/D3 rely on tape due to budget.

Scouting a center midfielder at a Cal Champs final. Most of the players on this field either played college soccer or never played college soccer, and now I'm going to try and recruit a center mid to show you guys what you need to learn in order to play college soccer. This particular player is high school age, but he's playing with men, which is something we really like to see. So if you have video of you playing up a level, maybe it's the UPSL or USL, That's fantastic for highlight videos. I have to also admit to you that I've already spoken to this player in the past, and they will be choosing to go to school without soccer, which is okay as well. But I think he has a lot of attributes that could have led him to play probably to Division 3 level. Oh, let's watch him. Do you see how this is a final? See the trophies over there? This league is called Cal Champs, and they're awesome. We got our boy, uh, Gwendosi right here. We're gonna watch this guy with the cool looking hair in light blue. Oh, here's a chance and he scores! That was not the kid I was scouting, to be honest, but that's how the soccer game works. We're scouting somebody and now maybe we want to scout somebody else. The game's a little bit chaotic, but this guy's been a very good player. That guy. What a ball! What happened? I'm gonna be honest, the guy that I was going to scout is playing as a striker, which is not his natural position, and he is not getting the ball very much. So we're gonna keep looking at him, but we might look at some other people too. And this is exactly what college coaches do as well. They go looking at one player and they find another. My college coach told me the story once. He was there to see this winger, and then he saw this center mid from, uh, I think he's from Puerto Rico. And he was like, this kid's amazing. And he ended up signing him to play college soccer for our team. So that's how this world works sometimes. It's also why it's so important you guys send your schedule to the college soccer coaches, because maybe you're not at the top of their list, but they're going to your game anyways. Then they watch you and the kid they thought was on the top of their list, and now all of a sudden they're recruiting you instead of them. It will also happen in your careers that I came, or the college soccer scout came to recruit you as X position, but because of the game you're playing in a different position, and maybe I look at that and I go, well, this isn't really a good day to evaluate him because I don't see him as a striker, particularly like with this player. He's not a striker. So even I hope to see him do well, but in the group that I'm thinking about, or a college coach is thinking about, they're going to say, look, this is not a striker. So then that game is kind of a wash. Or the coach says, oh look, he actually can play striker as well. That's good to know. I didn't see it that way. But college coaches usually have their own opinions, and soccer's subjective. So That's why it can be difficult. I'm just going to watch the game with you guys because the player I'm scouting is not as involved, but I want to show you guys some moments here. So this game has been a little bit chaotic. It's 3-2 to the light blue team. This player right there has been very good, very good dribbling. And this guy too, he played college soccer at the Division II level. That was not a perfect pass from him, but he's had a good game otherwise. That was very ugly. And now the player I was scouting is getting subbed off, and maybe I traveled all this way to see him and I didn't even get to see that much of him. This is why college coaches say to you, we need to see more of you, we need to see more of you, come to our ID camp. Because there I didn't really get to see a lot of him. Now maybe I still think he's a good player, which I do because I've seen him in the past, but I didn't get to see enough of him. So then that's when they often say, could you please come to our college ID camp? Because we can guarantee that we can watch you there. And then they still need to maybe see you at another showcase because they may say, well, we saw you at ID camp, you did really well, but we still need to see you in a more competitive environment. So it can be, you know, it's tough, guys. I know it's tough in the recruiting process, which is why it's so important to be in places where you're getting the most exposure possible, which tends to be at the slightly higher levels of youth soccer. Or you need to be willing to go to multiple ID camps and email schools over and over for them to see more video. Most of you guys don't send enough video. You're just sending, you're just sending a highlight video. You need to be sending every-touch videos over and over and over again, and then going to a showcase, and then going to an ID camp. And that can be the game changer, especially at the D3 level and even the D2 level, because they can recruit a lot on just video. Where the D1s really have to see you in person many times over to recruit you. Where the Division 3s, they don't have the budget, so they're going to have to do video. So then you get the interest of a D3 school first, then at least you have a backup so you can know you get to play college soccer. Then you can focus your attention on the higher levels. The score is 3-2 still, so the pressure is on. He's got a really good long throw, this guy, which college coaches also love to see. What a touch! Oh my God, what a fucking touch that was! Jesus Christ, that was amazing! Yo, that was a crazy touch! This— who is this guy? Who is this guy? Guess what, guys? He's my brother and he's really good.
