A recruiter interviews goalkeeper George Sanchez from Golden West College about transferring after fall 2023. With a projected 3.0 GPA and limited club experience, Sanchez needs a highlight reel and ID camp exposure to reach Division I, but NAIA or Division III programs fit his budget better.
Boss, tell me your name. George Sanchez. George Sanchez. Okay, I just watched this guy play for 90 minutes. Super hands and super feet. And I have a couple questions for him because, uh, I'm recruiting him right now, basically. Where are you playing right now?
Right now I'm at, uh, Golden West College.
And it's your second semester there, or second year there?
Yeah, second year.
So now you're trying to transfer the fall of '23?
Uh, after the fall of '23, it's gonna be my second season, really.
Okay, got it. So you're going into your second season? Okay, so you have one more semester. Have you spoken to any college coaches?
No, just almost. That's just the only complaint.
Do you have a highlight video? Uh, not yet.
I'm gathering clips for him.
What will your GPA be-ish by the end?
By the end of the fall, 3.0.
Okay. And, um, would you prefer to stay in California?
I just want to play.
You just want to play. Do you have a budget in mind? Like, if— how much you— like, could you pay $20,000 a year for school, or it's got to be—
It's got to be on the lower side, yeah.
Okay.
Um, okay, very good. You did a very good job tonight. When I was watching you, your feet were fantastic. Thank you. And your saves were fantastic. So it was very good. You obviously need to hire a video. Yeah. You need to go to a college ID camp. I know they're expensive, so either we can talk about getting you to one where they would make most sense for you. The other thing for you is you'll have your video, you'll message me on Instagram.
Yeah.
And then the other thing for you is given your budget, it's really important that you play somewhere. So even if it means NAIA because it's cheaper, it's worth doing that. And then we, you can deal with transferring because then you're in the college levels.
Yeah.
Otherwise, there are some other schools, but they're very good. Where did you play club soccer? Uh, I didn't play.
I played one year at Surfside and that was it. Okay, it's Surfside down here in Orange County, or it was, um, yeah, OC Surfside.
Okay, okay. Well, you did a very good job tonight and we'll talk soon, okay? Okay.
Why was I asking him those questions and what can you learn from it? So first of all, these are the exact questions college coaches are going to ask you. So first of all, his GPA is a 3.0, so he's not going to get an academic scholarship, which is disappointing. And also, you can only get into some schools, but a 3.0 is good enough to play college soccer. So that was the first thing on my checklist. Second, I wanted to know where he wanted to play college soccer, what state, because that would tell me a little bit about his budget, which was the next question. How much can he afford to go to school? College is expensive. And frankly, if you have or your family have a budget that can afford $20,000 or more per year, or you're willing to go into some form of debt that's manageable, your opportunities to play college soccer are much more likely. That's just how it is. Getting a full scholarship is just very unlikely. Now, in his case, given what I saw, given his situation, he's going to have to focus on NAIA schools and potential Division III schools. Now I think he's a Division I level soccer player. He was magnificent. But in order for that to happen, he would need to go to ID camps because he's playing at a junior college. Unless they win the whole thing, he's not going to just get outright notice. Or he could break the status quo if he's really proactive and sends emails and knows how to communicate with coaches, which is what I'm hoping to help him with. If you would like more help in this process, you're not sure what to do, give me a call. Links in the bio.
