A college soccer recruiting specialist explains when to contact coaches: Division III now if you're in an Elite Development Program, but Division I or II only once you have a highlight video matching current college players. Get honest feedback from a recruiting expert, not just your club coach, since they may downplay recruiting timelines.

This player is asking what they should do as a freshman in order to play college soccer. This guy says, I'm interested in playing college soccer. I play EDP, I'm a freshman, I'm looking to switch clubs soon in order to play at a high level. When should I start emailing coaches? So if you're playing EDP right now, you can start emailing Division 3 coaches, and if you make the new team, then you would let them know like, hey, I've made this new team, which is a big deal. If I watch your video and I look at your video and I go, look, I don't think your video is impressive, I don't think you're the level to start impressing coaches for your age, then I would also say don't start emailing coaches yet. But the question is, are you the level? So what you need to do is you need to talk to your coach and you need to maybe talk to an expert and you need to say to them, you know, am I on track to play college soccer one day? And if the coach is a good coach, they'll be honest with you and tell you exactly how they feel. They may also say to you like, you don't need to worry about that until freshman, sophomore, junior year. If they say that you don't have to worry about it till later, they are wrong and do not listen to them. They don't know that they're wrong, right? Their daily job isn't recruiting. Their daily job is coaching. My daily job is recruiting, and I can tell you that the college coaches are recruiting 9th graders, 8th, 9th, 10th graders. So if the coach says to you, hey look, you don't have to worry about that, just take in what he says and then still ask him, okay, I understand that I don't have to worry about it, but am I, do you believe if I were hypothetically to send my video to a coach, do you think that they would see me at what level? If your coach dodges the question again, that's annoying, then you need to go find somebody else, like me, who will answer the question, 'cause I will tell you. Or if he says, look, I think if you keep on this track, you can one day play Division III soccer, then that means you're on track to play Division III soccer. For example, if I see a really good video of a student who's playing ECNL MLS Next, and I go, wow, for their age, like, I think they're very good, then they're a potential Division I soccer player. And I'm not the only person who will be thinking that when they see the video, so will other college coaches. So the true answer is I would really need to see your video to tell you what to do. In order for me to see your video, I also need to know your grades, what you want to major in, what your goals are, you know, what schools you want to go to, what your budget is for college. So for that, please call me. Link's in the bio. Talk soon.
