Two speakers debate when to start college athletic recruiting. Most athletes should wait until senior year, not sophomore, though elite prospects like the Thompson sisters committed in eighth grade. There's no perfect timing: you either go early or late.
It's too early to start the recruiting process sophomore year, isn't it? Oh yeah, that's way too early. You don't need to start probably until senior year, I would think. Wait, senior year? Why would you say senior year? What about junior year? Well, I just even think junior year is probably too early. It's not like anyone else is starting the process then or getting recruited by then. Offers don't happen until you're a senior. Are you sure? I mean, I know the Thompson sisters, who are like the best of the best, they verbally committed to Stanford in like 8th grade. Yeah, but they're the exception to the rule. Those are the high-level players. The recruiting process is super easy for them. You know, you're not going to play at that level. You're not that good, right? You don't, you don't care about playing for the highest level teams, do you? Um, yeah, I do. I would, I would like to play for the best teams I can. Um, but you still think, you know, I don't need to start till I'm a senior? Well, what are the chances that when you're a senior they're going to tell you it's too late? Pretty unlikely. And we could have gone to all those ID camps for no reason because they're just going to tell you it's too early. Yeah, but I heard this story once where if you want to get an iPhone at the Apple Store and you show up on time, you're probably going to be in the back of the line and they're probably going to run out of iPhones. I feel like I'd rather be at the front of the line and have them tell me I'm too early than I'm too late. Well, then when is the perfect time to start? I don't want to be too early and I don't want to be too late. There is no perfect time to start this process. You're either early or you're late, so you have to pick which one you want to be.
