The College Soft Guy teaches high school soccer players how to handle recruiting calls from coaches. Ask two types of questions: tactical ones about the team's playing style, and personal ones about the coach's journey. Thoughtful questions position you as a leadership candidate.

Hey Coach, I'm about to get on a phone call with a college soccer coach. What should I say? Well, first of all, congratulations. No matter what coach you're talking to at what level, even if it's a coach you're not really interested in or a school you're not interested in, you should almost always take the call. One, it's good practice. Two, the coach may end up leaving somewhere. Three, some coaches are willing to be references for you even if that's not a school you like. They definitely know coaches at other places and you can be honest with them and literally say, Hey, you know, at some point you could eventually say, look, you're not a school for me, but I really appreciate you. You know, is there another— there's this school and I saw you have a connection. Would you recommend me? And they really might do that. So what you need to say, though, on these calls is this. Okay, I'm listening. Can you just like get to the point? I asked you one question. Like, you just keep blabbering. Never say that to a college coach because obviously that will piss them off. But I understand what you're saying. So the question you need to ask the coaches typically are around the playing style, which means you should have already watched them play quite a bit. And then also, if you want to get extra points, ask them about their life. You can say, why do you like coaching? Why do you like this school? When you create— when you first started coaching, is this something you knew you wanted to do? The more you ask them about their own life, you'd be really surprised why they love that. Because remember, at this point, if you're on a call, they like you as a player. They're trying to get to know you as a person. And if you can ask them really mature questions, now they're thinking, this kid could be the captain of my team. Thanks, College Soft Guy. I cannot wait to do that. If you want more help, comment, call me, schedule a call with you and your parents.
