Three scouts evaluate players at the Surf Cup showcase, focusing on a number-10 midfielder's left foot and vision. They note how possession-based play lets them assess individual talent better, and stress that strong academics and composure matter as much as skill for Division I recruitment.

Scouting a center mid at Surf Cup to see if they're good enough to play college soccer. We're going to scout this number 10 right here in purple. Here's the number 10. He takes great looks over his shoulder. He's got a really good left foot, and he almost always plays forward. Let's see this pass.
Great through ball. Oh, unlucky. Number 10, and you want to stand out, those types of balls, even though it didn't go through, especially at a showcase tournament, like, that's your job. He could have played it to the right back, could have played to the left back, Like, those are the moments you have to try. And in a way, all your league games, all your training sessions, all your ID camps are for you to play well at a showcase. So if you have to take risks at the show, at the training, at a league game, it's so we can see moments like that where hopefully they're successful. Now, as I was recruiting him, he got subbed off, which is out of my control and out of college coaches' control. So obviously I'd been watching him for a little while, so I got a taste of what it's like. So we're going to find a new center mid.
We're going to watch this player right here. He's the number 10 for LAFC SoCal right here. Takes up really good spaces. He's a very good left foot. And it sounds odd, but sometimes college coaches just can tell from a walk if they like a player, and his technique's really good. His team also plays really good possession, which allows me and other college coaching scouts to really get to see him and other players on his team more often. When you play on a team that either doesn't have the ball or doesn't play possession, you don't get to see that many opportunities. And it can be really frustrating when you're trying to watch a game. I missed it there, but he actually just made a really good tackle, the number 10. And for you center mids, especially if you are an attacking type, if you defend like a maniac, it will stand out to college coaches right away. You can watch, they're going to play out of the back. I really like this center back too. He's got really good composure. I think his grades are really good. And if he's really got the grades that I think he does, he can play college soccer. He's very good. He's good too, this left back. So now looking up, there's all these college coaches here. There's like 10 of them. And it's because this club is a good club. It's because they play good soccer and they're actually trying to play. And because of this, college coaches want to enjoy it more often, but also they can recruit easier because they get to see a team go through the motions of what they hope at the college level.
So this is the center back I liked quite a bit. Look, he's got really good grades and he's a 2028.
Wow, that's actually incredible.
If that is accurate, that makes him a potential Division 1 soccer player for sure. This is the player that I really liked as well, and I can go look at his video, which is awesome. He's got great grades, which is excellent, really good.
