Zev Taublieb says high school soccer players should start recruiting in 10th grade and talk directly to current players, not coaches, to find the right fit. His college coach supported him through a family crisis, while his brother played for a hostile coach who benched him. Ask starters and bench players on Instagram or during visits, not assistants.

How do you find the right college soccer coach for you? Finding the right coach is the most important part of the recruiting process. And when people ask me, why do you think, Zev, you should start in 10th grade and 11th grade this recruiting process? And I tell them, it takes a long time to find a coach you love. My college coach was an angel. My father got sick when I was in college, and my college coach played a big role for me. You know, he was there for me in a really dark and heavy time. My brother had a coach who was a complete prick and didn't play him for all 4 years, including senior day, and he recruited pricks of kids onto the team, and he had a miserable, awful experience. So, as I say all the time, academics come first, but the truth is, if you don't love your college coach, you will be miserable. So here's a secret to find out what your college coach is really like. Ask the players on the team what the coach is like, the starters and the bench players. So when you go on a visit, or DM them on Instagram, The kids are happy to talk to you, and the students and players will always tell you the truth. They remember what it was like to get recruited because they're young, so they will tell you the truth. If you ask the assistant coach, "What's the head coach like?" You know, that's his boss. He can't talk bad about his head coach. You want to talk to the players, and players will tell you, "Hey, look, if you're playing every minute, he's the best. If you're not playing every minute, he sucks." Or he'll say, "Look, he's just a great guy but not a great soccer coach." Or, "He's a great soccer coach but not a great guy." Whatever it is, that is what you want to do, is talk to the players. They will tell you the answer. If you want more help, gimme a call. Link's in the bio.
