A coach breaks down how defensive midfielders should build recruitment videos. Unlike attacking players, they need to show simple, quality touches and standing tackles that lead to passes, not flashy moments. The video should feature short sequences where the player dictates play and acts as a "revolving door," receiving and distributing the ball.

When you're playing as a 6, it's really important that you have lots of moments of you playing simple in your every-touch videos. But in your highlight video, we need lots of pings. Now let's say you make a tackle, tackle over and over again. Don't show us you sliding on the ground over and over again. We want to see a tackle where you stay on your feet and then complete a pass. That's really important for defensive center midfielders. And then the other tough part is defensive center midfielders' highlight videos aren't going to be that amazing. So what you're going to need to do is show them your highlight video where you're showing pings, moments of tackles, maybe even your body shape in regards to when you receive the ball. But then you, more than other positions, more than strikers, more than wingers, even more than outside backs, you're going to have to show every touch video sequences where you're involved in the play 3 or 4 or 5 times. Because as a defensive midfielder, you won't have as many highlights. I'm a defensive midfielder myself. But what you're very good at is dictating the game. And it's one of the few positions where statistics really doesn't tell the whole story. So if you really want to get recruited as a defensive mid and go to a place like the Stanfords of the world, it's so important that you have your grades, of course, that you're playing for high-level teams, but that in the video that you do send out, it shows you dictating within a minute sequence multiple times, you being involved. And you have to be mindful to not go too close to the ball, but also sit in that pocket and act as a revolving door. Comes into you, goes out to the side, and that pass leads to another pass.
