A recruit asks whether to keep emailing a college coach named Santa Cruz after initial positive contact at a recruiting event, or wait for the coach to reach out first.

So I've just been talking with Santa Cruz. Like, I went to a camp, it went really well, and then he sent me like an email because I sent him an email saying thank you and everything. He replied back and said, of course. And then a few like weeks later, it was Fest. So then I sent him like an email saying, hey, like, I'm going to Fest, like, this is my schedule, and then with a new highlight video. Then like he responded later on saying like, hey, I'll be at Fest, like, I'll see you during one of your games. I saw him there, I said hi, we spoke for a little bit. He said they're good and everything. And then afterwards, like, we kind of like lost contact a little bit. So it's been like, I haven't talked to him since Fest. So I've just been wondering, like, should I just keep going on? Or like, should I be like waiting?
Great question.
Great question.
So he's doing the good thing right now, which is he's at an ID camp with Santa Cruz. So the obvious one is you would go up to them. Now let's pretend that Santa Cruz was not there for hypothetical purposes. And actually at that camp, I think Santa Cruz was not there. No, they were there. They were there. I remember he was there. My point is to say, that's the obvious one. Go up to them and shake their hand in person. If he was not there, then he should go back to their ID camp again at Santa Cruz because that's how you guarantee getting seen. But the biggest thing he's missing is every touch video. He's gotta follow up with every touch video. You don't send one high video. So the way you get recruited is exactly what he did. Go to camp, send emails, go to Fest or some event, go to more camps, and then from there you keep sending emails. And then once you're about towards the end, middle of your junior year, you would say to them, "May I ask if I'm being considered part of the class of dot dot dot dot dot?" Because you've sent 3 to 4 videos. After you've sent 3 to 4 videos, you can ask an aggressive question like that. And then, if it's your dream school, then you would either go on an official visit, because you would just show up and go on a— you would go, rather than be a regular visit, you would just show up and you would email them before and say, "I'm gonna be there, I wanna come on campus," 'cause you can't really commit to any school unless you go on a visit. Santa Cruz is a unique situation because they typically don't commit kids until after they've been admitted, so he probably would hear that once the coach said it, in which case he would go get interest from other schools, then if he had to, he could leverage it back to Santa Cruz and say, "Hey Coach, I'm still super interested in Santa Cruz. I have received a lot of other interest from other schools. May I ask where I stand in the recruiting process?" And he can send that email after 4 to 6 emails. So he's in a good place, but this is the part where most of you get stuck and usually you lose out on your opportunities. If you wanna know which camps you should go to, comment the word camp and I'll send you those camps. If you wanna know the high academic schools you should consider, comment top academic.
