To get MLS Next or ECNL tryouts, skip the head coach and contact the club director or staff instead. Coaches rarely have decision-making power. Mention a mutual contact by name to boost your chances of a response.

Who should you email if you want to play at that MLS Next team or that ECNL team? Most people figure, well, I'll just email the coach of that team. Well, the coach of that team always doesn't have the say. They often don't respond to their emails. And if you just email them and it works, great. But usually you're gonna have to email the director of the club, the director of the boys or the girls depending on who you're with. And I always recommend emailing people that are not necessarily affiliated, meaning like even if you email the U12s or the U13s or somebody who's just in the club That can go a long way. Now when you email the coach directly, you're gonna say, "Dear Coach, I'd like to inquire about trying out." When you email the other people, you're gonna say, "Dear Coach, I'm trying to find the right person to talk to about trying out for Club X." Then if you get no responses but somebody who's not in charge says, "Oh, you need to talk to Gabby or Jeremy," then you're gonna go email Gabby or Jeremy and you're gonna say, Abigail, the girl who you spoke to or the man who you spoke to who said this is who you're supposed to talk to, you're gonna say, 'Abigail told me to contact you.' Now they're like, 'How do you know Abigail?' I should— I have to read your email because some— you were referenced to me, and now you're much more likely to get a response about trying out for that club team.
