Do I Really Love My Partner or Is It ROCD? (How to Find the Answer)

Danielle Gianni explains how Relationship OCD creates a cycle of doubt and checking that makes love feel numb. True intuition is quiet and calm; ROCD doubt is loud and frantic. Love is an action and a set of values, not a constant feeling. She offers three practices: label the doubt as a lie, redirect compulsion energy into value-aligned actions, and tolerate uncertainty.

You're searching for that certainty, that rush of romantic bliss that you think proves that your love is real. But here's the kicker. You cannot force a feeling. When your brain is overloaded with anxiety, doubt and intrusive thoughts, your nervous system often goes into overdrive or shuts down completely, leading to emotional numbness. The more you check for the feeling, the more elusive it becomes. Your mind has turned the feeling of love into a compulsion. The obsession is the doubt. The compulsion is the endless checking, comparing and analyzing your feelings. And every time you check, you don't find the perfect feeling. Your brain says, ah, proof that you don't love them. Do more checking. This is the cycle. And until you stop the compulsion, the feeling will remain in hiding. The most common fear that I hear when someone first comes to me for recovery help is. But what if this is my intuition? What if my gut is telling me the truth? I personally ended a good relationship in the past thinking it was my intuition. I causing me to have the doubts. I now know that it wasn't. It was ocd and I don't want you to make the same mistake. Here's how to differentiate between true intuition and the noise of relationship ocd. Relationship OCD doubt is loud and frantic. It's accompanied by high level anxiety, panic and the urgent demand for immediate certainty. It. It's repetitive. It loops endlessly. No matter how many times you answer it, it comes back minutes later with the same question. It leads to compulsions. It drives you to check, compare, confess, and seek reassurance. True intuition is quiet and calm. It's a deep, settled knowing, often accompanied by a sense of clarity or calm certainty. Even if the decision is difficult, it's decisive. True intuition leads to action or a final decision. It doesn't loop endlessly or constantly contradict itself. You won't find yourself posting in my Facebook group or Reddit or asking anyone what you think. You just make a decision and you move on. It's not anxiety driven. It's rooted in values, personal experience, wisdom, not fear. What I've learned is that true intuition is not confusing. It guides you. If your intuition is causing you daily panic, driving you to obsessive behavior, it's relationship ocd. It's not your gut. So how do we find the answer? You have to stop looking for the feeling and other compulsions and allow the time and space for the positive feelings to return. It's not going to happen as quickly as you'd like because your current expectations aren't realistic. OCD wants perfection, but it will happen. If you give it enough time, then it will happen more often. That is, if you don't start crowding that space with compulsions. I know this may sound impossible right now, but it is absolutely possible for each and every one of you out there. And I see my clients do it every day. Support is key, which is why I developed the Path To Love, a 24.7supportive program designed to walk you step by step through the process. While you're stopping the unhelpful compulsions, you can't control how you feel, so allow yourself to feel a little bit off as you change your response. But you can control what you do. Love is not always a feeling. Love is also an action, a commitment, and a value. So instead of asking yourself, do I love them? Ask yourself these questions. Number one. Does my partner align with my core values? Do they treat others well? Do they partner with me in difficult times? Do they share my vision for a family or a future? 2. Is there anything truly dangerous happening outside of my mind? Are they constantly neglecting or lying to me? Are they abusive? Do they want different things in life than I do? 3. Am I choosing to act in a loving, committed way towards them despite the noise? The goal of recovery is to put your energy back into reality, even if it's imperfect and living your values, being present, investing emotionally and physically being committed and not into chasing a feeling. You are acting as if the answer is yes and you are radically accepting any doubt. This is the core of exposure and response prevention. You are exposing yourself to the doubt. I don't feel love all the time and preventing the compulsion, the checking, forcing or overanalyzing. You are choosing to live your values in the presence of doubt, just like we all are. Most people don't know for sure what their partner is doing or feeling right now, but we are living as if things are okay or even moving through relationship ups and downs without the need to avoid and overanalyzing. If you are ready to stop the torture and start building a life based on reality and your values, here are three things that you can start practicing today. Number one Label the lie. Every time your brain asks the question do I really love them? Gently label it. That is fear talking. I am not engaging with that thought. This creates that crucial space. 2. Redirect your energy. Redirect the energy you would have spent on the compulsion like mental checking or reassurance seeking into value aligned action. Go hug your partner, do a chore or start a hobby. Focus on what you can control. And three Embrace the uncertainty. The only answer we are settling for is maybe. Maybe I love them, maybe I don't and then you can go on with your day. You are training your brain to tolerate the most terrifying thing not knowing for sure. This is where healing actually begins. Understanding this shift, letting your feelings be what they are and letting them ebb and flow as they normally do is one of the biggest breakthroughs my clients have. When you do this, I promise those loving feelings have a lot more space to drift back in, but implementing it takes time and guidance. It takes a system. That's exactly why I created the Path to love. It's a 12 week transformational program where we work together to dismantle the OCD cycle and implement the real method and get you to feeling peace, calm and more in love with your partner. More consistent. If you're ready to stop this cycle of doubt and start living a life rooted in peace, confidence and happiness, click the link in the description below to learn more.
