How to Stop Contamination OCD!

Danielle Jhiani (anxiety and OCD recovery coach) explains what contamination OCD can look like (physical contamination by germs/items and contamination of thoughts/feelings), frames the problem as the brain’s reaction—compulsive behaviors and mental responses—and teaches recovery through retraining those reactions. She emphasizes Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) as the core method (gradual exposure to discomfort without performing compulsions), the need for consistent practice, and that recovery is possible; she also references her own program/coaching as additional support.

Welcome back. My name is Danielle Thornton Gianni. I'm an anxiety and OCD recovery coach, helping people recover from anxiety, OCD and insecure attachment, just like I have, so you can live a happy life with happy, healthy relationships. Today we're going to talk about how to end contamination ocd. Do you want contamination OCD to no longer be there? Do you want to live a life free of thoughts about contamination, either physically, emotionally, or mentally? Do you want to feel normal, able to love and live without having these thoughts, worries, fears and doubts? Then stay tuned, because I'm going to teach you how to do just that in this video.
Contamination OCD shows up in many ways. Sometimes you feel physically contaminated with germs or items out in the environment, bodily fluids. Sometimes you might feel contaminated in your thoughts and your feelings. The constant worry about this contamination can overtake your life and drastically affect your relationships, your career and everything else. The reality is, it doesn't have to be this way. You can control and change this because it's your reactions, both mentally and behaviorally, to these intrusive thoughts, fears and discomforts that's actually causing this and making it worse. Now, this isn't your fault. I've been there. It's because you didn't know what to do with this. And so you're just coping the best way that you can, essentially in ways that your brain is telling you to do. But this is what's making it worse. It's how you're responding. It's the compulsive behaviors and the mental responses. And you can learn to change this. And when you do, OCD can fade away and no longer affect your life. In doing this, you're going to be completely retraining your brain how to respond to to fear, discomfort, doubt, uncertainty, imperfection differently. And the great thing is, I promise you, there are ways that fear and doubt and uncertainty affect your life in other ways outside of contamination OCD that you're either aware of or you're not aware of. And this will help with all of it. So retraining your brain away from this response can change your life pretty drastically. A way to explain how this works, if you think about the moments where you're distracted, you're happy, you're with friends, you're with family, and your contamination OCD isn't really bothering you. You're not really thinking about it, you are not engaging with it mentally or physically, and therefore it's not really bothering you. Now, these times are a little bit easier because you're distracted. You're distracted with other things, your brain is focused on other things. You're enjoying life. These are the easy moments. What you have to do to recover from this is create those moments with your own behavior. And as you can see, when you're focused on your obsession or your OCD theme, it bothers you. When you're not focused on it, it doesn't bother you. So this just goes to show that when you stop focusing on it, it's not going to bother you. And my programs teach you how to stop focusing on it. It's not as easy as telling yourself not to focus on it. There are specific techniques, but they're not difficult. There's only a handful, and the hardest part is putting it into your life consistently. But as you start doing this, you're going to see a difference in your life. Exposure and Response prevention, or erp, it teaches you to expose yourself to the discomfort and uncertainty. And I know that might seem really scary to a lot of you because when I struggled with ocd, I was running away from the discomfort, thoughts, feelings, situations. But all that did was teach my brain to fear and things became more and more uncomfortable and scary. When you start to expose yourself to your discomforts without doing compulsions, exposure and response prevention, what happens is, yes, you're gonna feel the discomfort. The discomfort isn't gonna be any more uncomfortable than what you already feel. You're gonna be exposing yourself to the discomfort, but what's gonna happen is it's gonna fade away and you're gonna go, oh, I didn't have to do that. Compulsion, I didn't have to do that. Safety, behavior. My fear based thoughts were just thoughts. They didn't come true. Discomfort fades away and you start to build comfort in these situations. This isn't an overnight technique. It's going to take time and consistency. But each time you apply an ERP technique, your discomfort will lower. And as you do this, you are going to build confidence in yourself. You're going to lose confidence in the ocd. You're going to build confidence in this new technique in all and any of the things that are bothering you right now, I promise, will and can stop bothering you. As you make ERP a way of life, it's not something that you're just gonna do and then stop. Because people without ocd, they do ERP every day. You actually do ERP as well in other situations. You just don't realize it. So the way that you get to the recovery stage and the way that you stay, the way that I have stayed in a lifetime recovery stage is by learning ERP effectively stopping all of my compulsions and making it a way of life. The real method is a method that I have created that has a foundation of ERP but additional techniques that got me to and keep me in the lifetime recovery stage that you won't learn anywhere else. You can live a life free of ocd. You can live a life that's happy, you can do, chase your goals, you can do all the things that you have been dreaming of doing and not have to deal with ocd. It's going to take learning new techniques, applying those new techniques and probably getting some support through that process which is why my most effective programs are my coaching and membership programs that offer a lot of that support. So if you want to live a life free of contamination OCD, click the link in the description below. I can help you with this and I promise no matter how bad it is it can and will get better. Have a good day.
