How to Stop Morning Anxiety

Danielle Jhiani, an anxiety coach, shares a morning visualization she uses: ask yourself "Who do I want to be today?" and imagine that version of you. Then let that image guide small choices like getting ready, moving your body, and how you talk to people.

Welcome back. My name is Danielle. I am an anxiety and OCD recovery coach. And today I'm going to give you an OCD and anxiety hack that worked really well for me when I was struggling with my ocd. And so for a lot of you, waking up in the morning can be a difficult time, right? Everybody's a little bit different, of course, but when you wake up in the mornings, a lot of people with OCD or anxiety will experience anxiety the minute that they wake up. Right? Which then leads into overthinking and other negative thoughts. And it's not always the best start of the day. So one of the techniques that worked really well for me, that is actually really beneficial even now that I'm not experiencing symptoms, is what I call who do I want to be today? And so what I would do is, when I woke up, regardless of how I was feeling, right. I still do this today. I would think about who I wanted to be that day. Right? If I could be anybody I wanted, if I could completely change my personality and be the best version of myself, who would I be? What does that look like? Right? Would I get up and get ready and do my makeup and look really nice? Would I want to get up and do yoga and take care of my physical health? Would I want to be a really great partner and maybe go give my partner a hug and kiss? Or would I want to go see my kids and be really positive with them first thing in the morning and then throughout the day? You know, what does my day look like? If I was my best self, what does my day look like? What do I do? How do I act? How do I deal with challenges? Okay. And what you're going to do is you're going to get a vision of who you would want to be if all of the noise was gone. And this is so beneficial. Was very beneficial to me when I was experiencing anxiety when I woke up, because it would redirect my mind in a way that I could focus on that and would then align my behavior. Right. Was I perfect? No. Did I always get up and do exactly what I wanted to do and did it look exactly like I wanted it to look? As far as my day goes, of course not. But what it would do is give me a vision for what I could do to have a better day, to feel better and to interact in my day in a way that was going to make me feel more productive. It would make me feel better about myself and really just guide me on, you know, in a way that was in the right direction, right? Instead of just sitting there, focusing on the anxiety, not wanting it to be there, overthinking. And some days were easier than others, right? But this vision has just been so helpful. Was helpful for me at that time and even today I still use this to envision what my best day looks like and to get started on a positive note. So hopefully this has been helpful for you.
