BYOU - Interview with Yaya Diamond by Dream Chasers Radio
11 Feb 2022 · 22 min
In this episode of Dream Chasers Radio, host Yaya Diamond interviews Danique Motzheim, founder and CEO of the Luxury Beauty App, author of The Global Thought Leader Mindset, and host of the Luxury Beauty Podcast. Danique explains how a personal need for a quick haircut while working as a child therapist sparked the idea for an on‑demand beauty platform that brings stylists, trainers, and other experts to clients within 30‑60 minutes. She describes the app’s business model—low commission, fast payment, and a marketplace for experts to sign up with a minimum of three years’ experience. The conversation covers the app’s launch in the United States, expansion into major cities such as New York, San Francisco, London, Miami, Dubai, and plans for further growth, including a partnership with Uber to solve transportation challenges for service providers. Danique outlines the company’s alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially women’s empowerment, citing a project in Ghana that supports trained hairdressers who might otherwise fall out of the workforce. She shares the technical and emotional hurdles of building the platform, including server outages and moments of doubt, and credits her development team for perseverance. The interview also delves into her motivation for writing The Global Thought Leader Mindset—to inspire impact‑driven leadership—and her future vision of leveraging technology to create sustainable futures in African and South American markets. The episode concludes with practical information on how listeners can access the app, become experts, and purchase the book.

So now that you know who we are, you can get us on all the platforms. That's done. Follow, like, subscribe, comment, whatever you want to do, that's fine. But what I want to do is I want to introduce my guest to you.
Danique Motzheim.
Ah, Motzheim.
Okay, yeah, you've got him.
Thank you so much for being on the show. I appreciate it. Yeah, thank you.
Thank you for this opportunity.
No problem, no problem. So tell me about yourself.
Um, now my name is Danique Motzheim. Um, I'm from the Netherlands but living now in Spain since a few months. Um, I'm the author of the Global Thought Leader Mindset book, and I am the founder and CEO of the Luxury Beauty App, which was launched last year in the United States.
So yeah.
Oh, excuse me. Pretty cool.
Yeah, it is cool. I think it's really cool. So tell me about this. Okay, so Let's talk about the app. Theluxurybeautyapp.com is where you can find this, but literally tell me about the app and why did you start it?
Oh, um, the reason why I started was I was a therapist for children and I created, um, films on YouTube about the problems that children are facing. And in that time, I also did the sessions with the children. So to communicate that, I was in need of a hairdresser because my hair was like, like boom. But after an hour, some parents came in with the child and we, for the first meeting, but my hair was like crazy. So I thought, Where can I find a hairdresser who can do my hair now just to do my next session? So in the Netherlands, we haven't any app like that where I can find a hairdresser who is coming to me because I haven't had any time to go to the salon. So I created the app, the Luxury Beauty App. So now the hairstylist can come to me within 30 minutes, so very fast. So that is pretty nice because we don't have that in the Netherlands. And yeah, this was a major opportunity for having service like that when you are in need. And so—
Wow.
Last year we launched the app in the United States. Because many people was asking me, especially from San Francisco, because I launched my company in San Francisco and people were saying, oh, I just need it so much. That is so fun. When are you coming to us? I said, wow, yeah, we can start here. And we also provide the program products. So you can also order your products on the platform and have it delivered within minutes. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes, sometimes it takes 60 minutes, but yeah, we're the fast delivery service. So yeah.
Wow. Wow. So you do have that in New York City right now too?
Yeah, you saw. Yeah.
I'm on the website, darling. LuxuryBeautyApp.com. I am there. I am there. So what I'm looking at here is wonderful because you can book a hairstylist, a manicure, a personal trainer, and it says many things more. I mean, and you can also become an expert.
Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Wow.
And you don't have to pay us anything. Um, no, you don't have to pay us anything, just, um, a small percentage, but that is for to get your payments Within 7 days. So many platforms are asking for very high commission.
Yeah.
But I know how it felt to lose so much money if you do all the work, you know?
Oh yeah.
I thought, okay, how can I make it more honestly? Or how can I say it best?
Yeah, how can you make it better?
Yeah. More beneficial.
Yeah, yeah.
So yeah, I love this freedom in this world.
Definitely. So it's in the United States. I see you have it in New York City now as well. And I'm looking at the map. It says we stand up for equality, sustainable economic growth, and decent work for all. Um, I love this. You guys are in the United States. So I'm looking at the map. It's yellow and red. What's the yellow? And then there's blue. There's red, yellow, and blue, and then there's like a gray.
Oh, you look on the website?
I am.
Um, no, the colors doesn't really— they don't matter. But no, those are our sustainable goals.
Okay, gotcha.
Um, and this is for, um, the United Nations has a few sustainable goals, and we work with women empowerment. So then that we don't— that we empower women to also create freedom for themselves, for their own work, and decent work for all. And in Ghana, because I lived in Ghana for 6 months, Uh-huh. And when I was there, I thought— I worked there as a volunteer for Street Girls Aid, and I saw so many girls, uh, has education for becoming a hairdresser, but after their education, they got lost in the society.
Yeah.
And I thought about it, how can I help those girls? How can we track on them to help them for the future? So I thought maybe we can use our technology to keep track on them and help them, and they can come to us very, very easily because of the platform. So we can promote them and they can keep doing the work they love. So this is our sustainable goal for Ghana, and that's why we work with the United Nations.
Wow, that is girlfriend. You just do it, girl. Dang, you just do it, girl. I am telling you. So you're okay. So I'm just I'm so so impressed. So you're live in New York, Marbella, Dubai, San Francisco, LA, Abu Dhabi, Miami, London, and Rottingham.
Yeah, we're starting out.
I'm sorry, I was cutting out.
Oh yeah, we're starting out in London this week.
You did?
Oh, London is very new for me. Yeah, because I was very scared because of the Brexit. Um, but yeah, it works fine. It's no problem.
Awesome. And you partner with Uber?
Yeah.
Oh girl, what? I'm done with you.
The interview is over.
I am slacking. I have to pick up my game. I got to do something more. OK. You go, girl. So how did that come about?
Because in Amsterdam— have you ever been to Amsterdam?
I have.
Ah, cool.
Don't ask where I went. Don't ask where I went. But yes, I've been to Amsterdam. Yes, ma'am.
Oh cool. So it's very difficult, uh, to park your car as an expat. Let's say you are a hairdresser and you need to go from, um, the south to the north of Amsterdam, and it's very difficult to go by your own car because parking is terrible in Amsterdam. And it is also terrible in— I think in New York City is terrible and other big cities around the world.
Oh yeah.
So I thought, how can I, um, make this transport a lot easier for our expats? So I thought, okay, Uber. And Uber is my most inspiring company in the world because they drive the world. And I thought, let's ask a partnership with them. So Uber comes to the hairstylist, to their home or wherever, wherever she is, and Uber brings her to her clients. So you can have your hairstylist within 30 minutes or less.
Oh my gosh. Wow.
Wow.
That's just wonderful. That is just amazing. You have done so much. I mean, What was the hardest thing that you've done so far?
Hardest thing. Yeah, sometimes I thought, because I developed this platform by myself with my developers team and my developers are really awesome, but sometimes I thought, no, I'm just quit this. And sometimes the server is out of service. And then I thought, oh my God. And those moments are the most hardest part when I want to give up. But yeah, you need to keep going and believing. And yeah, I have an amazing team of developers beside me, so they say no, it's no problem. It's because when so much people are on the server, it can happen. It can happen with all All platforms out there, so you don't have to worry.
Yeah, definitely. It's, it's really commonplace, especially when you get popular. Popular like you. You're getting popular. Yes, that is so cool. So cool. Okay, so that's just the one thing that you've done so far, but you have a book, girlfriend. You've been, you've been busy. Okay. You have been busy. You're author— you're the author of the Global Thought Leader Mindset book. Tell me about that.
Oh yeah, I have been asked by, um, CBS News, uh, for Global Thought Leader in Beauty Technology. Yeah, it's— we, uh, we are in process for record it, but I cannot enter the United States at this moment, and I want to record the show in San Francisco, but I cannot enter the United States at this moment because of the restrictions.
Yeah.
But so we need to postpone the filming. But I thought with my sustainable goals, how can I create more impact in this world? By using a thought leader mindset. And I was searching about everything and I researched all the companies in the world who have a thought leadership. And I just, yeah, wrote everything down and thought, okay, maybe I can use this and write a book and just to, I don't know, maybe inspire some people in this world to be, to create a bigger impact for other people in their business or in their life. of others. And yeah, I just hope to create more impact for others. That's why I created this Global Thought Leader Mindset book.
You go, girl! You know, I am just— you know, what was that like? You know, you have an app, you know, and then you're writing a book, or did it come out backwards? How did that come?
Um, first the application And I just created it, I think, 3 years ago. So for 2 years of developing and not making any, any sale of it and only building and building, it's like building a house without enjoying your house, you know?
Yeah.
And yeah, and then I was thinking about how my life was in Ghana, and it was what I thought when I left the country. And the last thing that I told to myself was, when I come back, I will do it better, or something like that. And it just touched my heart when I I said it to myself and I thought, how can I do better with my platform in Ghana for those girls? And I thought, that is a thought leader to create more impact for others. And I thought, yeah, let's create a book and maybe the experts on my platform can use that book to create a better impact for their community or Their customers, or yeah, that's, that's how it rolls.
Wow. What was this, your first book that you ever wrote?
No, when I was a child, like, uh, I was in— I think, I think I was 10 years old. I wrote a, I wrote a book about an island and a dragon. That was my first book. It was so cute. And my second book was when I was a teenager, and I wrote a book about a girl who just left the country and went to the United States to become a Karate Kid.
Okay.
Yeah, America is my biggest inspiration.
Really?
Also when I was a teenager. So yeah, that is how my, my alter history begins. I hear you.
Yeah, no, I love Europe. I love the diversity of it all, and I love to travel, that you can be in a different country in a matter of a few minutes, really, you know. So, you know, you're living in like— people in the United States want to go over where you are.
Yeah, really?
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. And so, wow, wow. So, you know, you've done so much. What's next for you?
Um, I want to create more impact in countries like, uh, the African countries and the South American countries and Yeah, create a more sustainable future for them. Because my thoughts about the African countries, they are living today, and this is so beautiful that they are living by today, but sometimes they forget the sustainable future. And that is what I wanna, uh, that is what— yeah, I don't know, that is what I wanna create for them or something, for the next generation. Yeah, um, by technology. So this is my new big thing.
Wow.
For, uh, for myself. So wow.
Well, I love the fact that you've not only done it for yourself, but you've also done it for other people where they can actually go ahead and be a part of this. And I mean, amazing app where if they want to become an expert, all they have to do is go on the website luxurybeautyapp.com, go down to the bottom It says sign up here, and that's where you sign up to be an expert.
Yeah, thank you so much.
So the biggest thing is, what is the criteria to be an expert?
Um, you need to be— you need to have at least 3 years of experience. Um, and, um, for me, it is important that you are happy and enthusiastic or something, excited, because my personality is, I don't know, happy or energetic. So I hope other people are, yeah, I don't know, vibing with me on the platform. I don't know.
Definitely, definitely. You want that same energy.
The experience is very important.
Definitely, you want that same experience, you know, that same experience, because when you do that, when you have that, you give that off to your clients and then there's great feedback.
Yeah.
