EP 49 Challenge of Change on the beach
17 Apr 2023 · 13 min
Episode (EP 49) of the All Things Good for You podcast featuring Brian Bowen (co-host) speaking solo from Kauai while Amy Christiansen provides intro/outro disclaimers. Bowen reflects on the challenge of change and personal transformation while on vacation: the need to adopt new perspectives and habits, shed conditioning that no longer serves, identify fuels that sustain willpower, and create process and plan to achieve goals. He describes inner voices (soft/encouraging vs. assertive/spicy), his mantra “I’m not done yet,” approaching age 50, and a planning technique he calls the “power of P” (14 P’s; highlights include process, plan, passion/purpose). The transcript includes sponsor reads (SpinQuest and Chevrolet) and a medical-advice disclaimer from Amy.

Good morning everyone and thanks for joining us on All Things Good for you podcast. My name is Brian Bowen, my co host and partner in crime that usually on here with me is Amy Christensen and she's not with me today. I'm actually doing a little short from Kauai which is gorgeous. It's my first time here. I'm on vacation and just having a little bit of a little bit of a timeout in life. Always a good time to reflect and restrategize and get clear kind of step back, regain your tempo in life and game plan it out a little bit. It's 6:30 in the morning here and it is gorgeous. I'm down on this little inlet, this little beach area by my place that I'm staying. Have to walk through the jungle on a little trail to get here and it's this gorgeous little beach with a canopy of trees hanging over it. I don't even know what kind of trees they have here. I need to study. They have so many gorgeous foliage and things like that here and it's low tide right now and frog just jumped off a rock and love to see a little turtle poke its head up here in a bit. Anyway, as I venture Onto my vacations, I always find time to do some self reflection and re gear, if you will. Sometimes we hit a point of exhaustion, running a little bit of a marathon in life and hit that little burnout and it's time to take a little break, regroup. And when I take trips, I'm always, this is the first trip, honestly, that I've read so much, so many just novel books that have nothing to do with my current life, that are just fun mysteries and fun reads, which were fantastic. But I always try to find time to meditate on things and find time to sit down and jot some ideas down or think about things in my life that I want to rework a little bit, change things that are causing me exhaustion, points that are giving me joy and just re emphasizing certain things. And sometimes when we identify areas in our life that we really need to work on, or areas in our life that we want to bring more fulfillment in or have more of, and also things that we might need to get rid of, sometimes we have to dig deep and conjure up some new identities for ourselves a little bit and work really hard to change. So really this conversation is the challenge of change, right? So when we have some new ideas and goals, there's a little turtle head just poked up. Sometimes we have to change some things, Sometimes we have to get rid of some habits, sometimes we have to gain some new habits. Sometimes we have to get a new perspective and adopt one that we haven't had before. And sometimes we need to get rid of some perspectives, some conditioning of who we are and how we got here. And some of these superpowers you need to keep and some, they don't serve you well anymore. And as I'm talking into this mic, I have a soft voice. It's nice and quiet here. And sometimes that's the same voice that's in my head when it's okay, Brian, you, you want more of this in life and here's who you need to become to have that. You've got this. You can do it. Really positive, soft, encouraging words. And then sometimes some of the voices that I've used in the past can be a little heavy handed. Let's get off your ass, buddy. Step it up. What are you gonna do? You gonna lay? There you go. You gonna quit? What are you gonna do? So I've always had this little mantra that I'm not done yet. And as we get older, I'm approaching 50, sometimes that I'm not done yet. Voice isn't as loud, isn't as Assertive gets a little quieter. It's kinda. I'm not done yet. What? I didn't hear that. What'd you say? And sometimes we need to think about that. And maybe your mantra changes. Maybe your voice gets a little louder, but a little more assertive. There's a time for your nice quiet voice to engage with you and there's a time for that loud voice. And sometimes they can be best friends. It's like, alright, dude, he's not listening to me. You need to step in. You got this one. And then the more assertive one pops in and smacks you around a little bit. Get you up off your ass and get you going. And so I have a lot of new goals that I've been working on and some new identity for myself of parts that I'm really enjoying and I want to adopt more of. And anytime there's things that are new, there's a new set of challenges that come with that. And sometimes those challenges can be painful to get through. Sometimes they're very time consuming and you might feel like there's not a lot of reward as far as financial or otherwise. What you might maybe rather be laying in your hammock reading that book and you're like, oh, it's taking so much of my hammock time away. But you have to really think about what the overall goal is that you want from it, right? And how much passion is it bringing you and does it meet your desires and fulfill your purpose and all come together. And if it does, then you need to engage yourself to really push really hard to change. I have a list of some new, some new habits I need to adopt on this new journey. Like I said, every vacation for me, there's always a golden nugget that comes from it. A little theme or a new little mantra or some new identity words for myself on who I want to be. Some of those are driven by different fuels. And even on this trip I wrote down a little list of things that fuel me, things that are going to fuel me or that are my new fuel sources to help when I feel my willpowers decreasing or if I feel like my stamina is dropping a little bit thing because it's a, sometimes it's an endurance sport. So sometimes those things that fuel you are, I'm approaching 50. I want to be the best I can be when I turn 50. Sometimes those fuel sources could be, I got, I want to come on more vacations like this and be on beautiful beaches like this and spend time being in nature sometimes Those fuel sources could be. I just driven by this and I really want to accomplish this goal because that's. It's just burning in my belly and I don't even know why. And you have to listen to that intuitive sense. We've done a podcast on intuition and egoition and sometimes that intuition is screaming at you. You have to go all in. So the power of change, the power of transformation is incredible. But it can be a challenge sometimes to change and transform. And there's. I think we constantly need to be in a state of change because everything else around us is in a state of change. And I think when we are not changing, when we're not evolving, when we're not moving forward in life, that is moving forward all around us. And the people and your loved ones all should be heading in that direction. If you feel a sense of stagnation, if you feel a sense of blah, if you don't have that excitement, if you feel exhausted all the time, then I really would take some. Put yourself in a timeout like I have. You don't need to be on a beach. You can do it from home. Although I gotta highly recommend this beach. Home's nice. We should be doing it on a regular basis. And I need to get better at that too. I spend time in contemplation and writing goals and stuff like that a little bit, but I need to do it a lot more. But this is the big one. Like when you have these moments and you can really step thousands of miles away from where all of your action is, then get quiet in your head. But if you feel again that sense of stuck, stagnation, blah, lack of joy, whatever it is, not fulfilling your goals, not fulfilling your purpose, then step back and just take a look. And what's. What do you want? What get you? What do you want to get? What do you want to get after? Get after it. Write it down. Start coming up with a game plan, a strategy. I just, I was riding on the plane over here, I had 14 P's, so it was the power of P times 14. Actually, I'm going to do a podcast on this. I'm not going to tell you all the P's right now, but as I was putting down my different goals, I was applying my P plan. There's a lot of PPs P plan to these goals. I would look at each goal and apply, hey, am I meeting this? Am I meeting this? Am I meeting this? Does this one apply? And out of all of them, there was about four that were constant themes that Were showing up. And two of those themes, I won't give them all away because I want to do a podcast. It was process and plan and you know, the passion. Oop, I just gave you another one. Dang it. Purpose. Whoops. Just give you another one. Sorry about that. I'm gonna stop now. So that's four P's were all there for this goal, but the ones that were more consistent were process and plan. And we can be burning fuel up by not having a good process and plan. Right? We're again trying to push a boulder up a hill and if we step back, take a pause, look at it, actually come up with the proper plan and the proper process to achieve some of these goals. We're actually going to be more energy efficient to achieve who we want to be with our next kind of identity. And just think about that. What? There's another turtle head. Oh my gosh. I want to go out there and swim with that turtle so bad. I'm going to after this podcast. So who do you want to become? What's your next thing? This doesn't have to be every five year thing, every ten year thing. You can make small shifts every year. You can make small shifts every three months, every quarter. And what do you need to get that done? What's going to be your plan? What's going to be your process? Who do you need to become? Who do you need to adopt? What kind of mindset do you need to adopt to face these challenges? So again, the challenge of change and transformation is not always easy, but you can do it. So what is your fuel source? Get loud with yourself. Don't always have to use there's another turtle. That nice soft, fluffy voice. You can break out the spicy voice too. So that is my little short. So join me on this journey for your next little transformation, your next little change, your next little challenge. And step into it and step in aggressively, right? Become who you want to become. Set those goals, achieve those goals, make it happen. Right? You got one life, live it. Thank you for joining us and all things Good for your podcast. I appreciate you guys. We look forward to chatting with you again. Bye.
