Hello everybody and welcome to All Things Good for you podcast. My name is Brian Bowen. I'm one of the hosts of the show. My co host, Amy Christiansen is unable to be with us today, so you're stuck with me. I'm just going to drop a short in today. I don't know exactly what's going to come out of my mouth, so I do apologize for it might be like flying a kite in a hurricane a little bit here. I just wanted to spend a little time talking about something that's really important to me, something that I've been working on all my life, something that I look back and I realize how impactful it has been in my failures, in my successes, in my drive, in my ambition, in my everything. It's everything. So we're talking today about mindset and I know all things. Good for you. We talk about a lot of different services and we talk about personal development and mindset seems basic. It seems we already know this. This is one of the things that I like to Brendon Burchard always says common sense isn't common practice. And I wanted to talk about it and really try to give it another breath, try to really help us feel it at a much more visceral level. And what I'm trying to say, I don't want it to scratch the surface. It is so important and I got to tell you, it's something that is consistently going on all the time, whether you know it or not. And we really need to put the spotlight on it and understand all these different influences that are influencing us on a daily basis. And then how is that translating in our minds what's percolating in there that's shaping small things about the way we think, about the way we see things, Right? So I'm going to go back to basic foundation things. So the mindset to me is of extremely important foundation of our potential and possibilities in life. So if you guys have saw my momentum compass, I talk about the regression line, and I talk about the stagnation line and the progression line. So that mindset is the foundation on how we're moving, if we're staying at a stagnant line, if we're declining or regressing, or if we're able to grow, if we're able to move forward. And I don't know about you, but I'm freaking. I get exhausted, right? All the bombardment of all the negative things of life. I get exhausted by trying and trying sometimes to continue to move forward, push the ball forward, but we have to stop and look about. Why are some of those things not happening? Why are we not moving as forward as much? Why are we sometimes stuck in an unhappy place? Why are we stuck sometimes in our career? Why are we stuck sometimes in relationships? Why are we stuck sometimes not being in relationships? Why are we stuck sometimes thinking something in our mind about I'm not good enough or I have saboteur thoughts or imposter syndrome, whatever these thoughts are, where do all these things come from? And the important thing about mindset that we have to have to embrace is it is about consistency of awareness and consistency of the types of input that we're putting in and how we're able to utilize that and take action. I just listened to a podcast earlier today about the three I's, identity, intention, and initiation. And those three eyes are extremely important in this mindset piece of this foundation that creates the potential and possibilities that we have. So, you know, stop and ask yourself, who are you now? Who do you want to be? How did I get to these places? And sometimes we embody mindset like I was thinking about somebody in my life who taught me indirectly to be the biggest optimist ever. So I drive people nuts because I don't like to placate. I don't like to fall into this dialogue with people who are super heavy or who seem to be negative or complaining. I just don't like it. It pushes me away. I am a optimist and I love it. And I know that there's people that say they're more realist. I can be a realist and an optimist at the same time. But the person who taught me that indirectly taught me that because they were super pessimists. They were pessimists about everything. They just had this negative energy. And I grew up in this. And I remember stopping one day and thinking, I do not want to be like that. I am going to be. I want to see the best in things. I want to not get stuck in that mental rut of life. I don't want to feel like I'm pulling, pulled down. There was always a draw for me after that. There was always a draw to want this energy to pull me up. There's this moving forward kind of energy. And the great thing is this person taught me that without even knowing that. They taught me that the stuff that happens in our lives is input coming in. What type of energy is that coming in? And then what do you do with that? Do you transform that energy? Do you transform that heavy negative energy into something better? Because you can transform it. Do you hold on to that and you start adopting some of their beliefs, some of those attitudes that they embody. Do you start going there or do you start seeing what that's doing and start becoming hyper aware of how that's shaping their lives? And you're like, oh, that's not working. And subconsciously you start changing and shifting your mindset to be the opposite of that, right? Or to be something different. We have all of this input coming to us from so many different places. And I know when we get older, it's harder to break some of that stuff. The great thing is, in today's world of science, we. We know that you can't teach an old dog new tricks is all bs, right? We know neuroplasticity is real. It's really about your interest level. And so what is your interest? Where are you at in your life that do you want to change? Are you tired of being stuck in a certain place? Are you tired of specific relationships? Whether it's spouse, whether it's friends, Right? There's times where you have to change things. There's times where you have to decide to be interested enough to be unstuck, to be able to move forward, to be able to have that momentum compass, to be able to go into that growth cycle. And that's a mindset piece. It's the foundation. We can talk about all of those things, but unless you Adopt a mindset. If you don't have it right now, if you're more of a fixed mindset, this is old school versus growth mindset, you're not going to be able to see that possibility as much. And when we're in a world that has so much chaos, when there's so much negativity going on, it's easy to give up. And I have days throughout the week where I'm just tired. I just don't want to do it, like even to do this podcast right now. I had 20 million things that I had to do. But I'm interested.

And I know that I love sharing. I know I love talking about this. I know I personally am immersed in personal development. I just came from the gym and I listened to three podcasts from some of my people that, that really inspire me, that help motivate me to help me see the possibility. Because there's just days where you're just beaten down and there's days where it's hard to get out of bed. There's days where, you know, it's hard to bring an energy to your work environment. It's hard to bring an energy to your home environment. I get it. I have three kids, I have a wife, I have two dogs, I have businesses, I have employee stuff. And I have all these things just like everybody else. So I need to be in the environment and with people who are also lifting me up who. And maybe it's not even with words. It's just their energy on, their insights, their outlook on how they are in life. And that is extremely important. So to have a growth mindset and to be able to see possibilities, you need to surround yourself with things or people or information or activities and things that help stimulate you to make you want to grow, to help you see the possibilities. So recently listened to another podcast. They were just sharing the old school thing where if you write the word impossible, there was a time where you circled the I'm and I'm possible and then you scratch it out. It's just possible. And I really love that. I love to stop when there's. And I've done this. I just didn't even sometimes know how to put words to it. But when something's crazy, if something situation happens, I always take a 24 hour pause. I do not get emotional and react. I'm like, all right, I'm just going to let that marinate, just let it percolate. And then I stop. After I've let that, after that 24 hours has gone by, I stop and I just check in with myself and I ask myself, what is the possibilities that could happen? How could this situation or this problem or this thing can be transformed? What can I turn it into? So there's times where things can seem really crappy. Maybe a whole strategy that you were putting together didn't work out, a plan fell apart. You encountered and had some interaction with some co workers, whatever it is. So you have this thing happen that didn't turn out the way you wanted it to, or you got caught off guard and were surprised. So you stop, you let that just calm down for a little bit and then you come back to it. Once you're out of that sympathetic nervous system, down a little bit more grounded, you have more clarity, right? We're not as reactive and we're that insightful and this just kind of blossoms. So from that place, that's when you just stop and you're like, what's possible? What can I do? How could. What could an outcome that I never thought of before look like? And so it's cool because there we are in this box so often. It's so easy to be so freaking complacent. It's so easy to lose that motivation, to lose that energy. To start thinking about the possibilities activates this creative energy that activates a part of us that has to start seeing beyond that, has to start seeing all the possibilities. And that's where amazing things in this world are created, right? From mistakes, from stepping back and go, okay, what is possible? Because there is nothing but possibilities. And if you are in a mindset that doesn't see that or has such a hard time connecting to that, then there's a foundation issue. And I'm not judging. I've been there and I just want this world to needs all of us to have a mindset that creates an evolutionary pool, that sees the possibilities, that stops putting things and people, politics, things in a box that create a stagnant energy or regression energy. Right? But it starts with us and it starts with me, my family, it starts with my employees, it starts with the people around me. And so you by adopting a better mindset, an open mindset, a mindset that's a growth mindset, a mindset that sees the possibilities, a mindset that is aware of the information they're putting in, stopping asking questions about the information because we're being influenced from every possible direction there is. So just know that you are being influenced, you're being influenced right now. And I hope that this is a positive influence to you, that wants to inspire you to take a pause, to take a beat and just take a minute and have some self reflection on the things that is coming into us. That energy that's coming in, what type of influence is happening? How am I showing up? How am I responding? How am I reacting? How am I as a husband, how am I as a wife, how am I as a boss, how am I as an employee, how am I in this, in society in general? And this is the hard place and this is where I want to make sure we're not just knowing it, that we're viscerally feeling it. I really want you to take a hard stop and just think about, are you here? Are you growing and moving forward? Are you stagnant? Are you constantly being pulled back down emotionally into a place that's darker and not serving you well or helping you be the best person that you can be? And there's a time where that's heavy. There's a time where you need to seek out coaches and counselors and things like that to help you get out of that. But there's also a lot that can be done just by reflection, right? Just by stopping and seeing and thinking about, in the situation where I'm in right now, what is possible. And start writing down even things that don't seem attainable, but they're possible. Right? I don't want you to have an easy reach, an easy stretch just for what's possible or for what's obtainable. But what is possible, What I watch, I love those videos when you're at a restaurant and there's a TV, even though I freaking hate TVs at restaurants. It's overwhelming. But, but they have the crazy extreme sports where people are doing amazing things with their bodies and flipping motorcycles off cliffs and parachutes open and doing 20 back flips and landing on a skateboard. Just crazy stuff because it reminds me of what is possible. Like, I could never think that is possible until I saw somebody do it right. I love seeing humans overcome extreme challenges and tragedies. I don't like to see the tragedies, but to see them overcome. To hear stories of people that have grown up in way more unfortunate environments. Environments to me. I can complain about things in my childhood. I didn't have it the easiest. I came from a broken home with a parent that was divorced multiple times. And I could go on and on. And I failed myself miserably. I. I got. I caught myself in a mindset of I'm not worthy. I'm not good enough. Who am I? I'm a piece of crap. I was there one time and it's not like the switch just flipped. I had to continue to dive into another world that did you know your.

I saw possibility in I saw possibility in me moving away from where I grew up, facing the world with having no people, no connections, and starting fresh and who I wanted to be. I created my own identity. And then I did it again. I like, I grew from that experience and then I moved somewhere else and I'm like, I'm ready for the next version of me. What do I want it to look like? Who do I want to be? How do I want to show up and what is possible? So my mindset just didn't even comprehend what barriers there could be. I remember when I moved to North Carolina, I had $1,300 in my pocket. I didn't have a job and I didn't even know where I was going to live. But I saw. I knew what was possible I knew what I was going after, and within days I had a job. A couple days after that, I moved out of the hotel I was staying in and got a house or an apartment, and it kept building. And then from there it's okay. What's possible next? And I think when we're younger, we definitely have this courageous spirit. Some of us do, some of us don't. But it does take courage. It takes a certain toughness, certain mental toughness with some flexibility and with some optimism to want to do that, to be able to have the courage to step in to what is possible. So we have barriers all around us all the time, right? So what are your barriers? What's holding you back? What's stopping you from moving forward? What's not allowing you to see beyond? What's not allowing you to see the possibilities? What energy is pulling at you? What way is it pulling? Is it pulling up? Is it pulling down? Is it pulled sideways? Do you not have the support you need? Are you held back by fear, finances? Fear of the people that are on your team? The fear of failure? What is it when you have that kind of fear and when you have had moments in your life where you did fail, if you've had moments in your life that were painful, it's hard to get back up again. It's hard to get back up again. I've been beaten down, I've beat myself down. And the great thing about getting up again is you build that muscle, right? We have to have more reps, we have to have more consistency. And then it doesn't hurt as bad. It doesn't hurt like everybody. Everybody fails. Everybody fails at something, and you just keep plugging away that some of the most successful people, some of the people that have created the most ingenious thing, fail and fail. So don't let those things create that mindset. That's input, right? That's an energy that's coming, and that's something that is conditioning you right now. If we just drew a line in the sand and we all can agree, anybody can change their mindset. Neuroplasticity is a real thing. I can control and curate carefully consider and curate my own thoughts that lead to my beliefs, that lead to my attitude. And those things can cause shifts, and those shifts can create better actions and outcomes for us, and then we get that reward. This is, again, the thing that sometimes we don't even realize. Think about where you've won. Think about when you have overcome some of those challenges. Think about when you've overcome that Mindset, that energy of our mind, that is, I'm not good enough that I'm tired of trying. I was there a couple weeks ago.
Oh, my God.
I can't even tell you. I'm working on multiple projects right now. And the creation part is great. And then there's this other part that can be a struggle and it's not meeting some of my expectations. And it's just, oh, I'm tired of trying. And then I tried jumping on the social media thing because I felt like I had to. And it was fun to create. But then you're looking at the. You're looking at how many likes or oh, my God. There was. Had 415 followers and it dropped to 409. Does that mean they didn't like me? Those are horrible. It's a horrible place to be. I don't like it. So my mindset is, I don't care. I'm just going to keep creating. I'm going to create that. And it's time consuming. Just going to create it. I'm creating this podcast right now, and I hope that you find something that is inspiring to you. I hope that you find something that is motivating you. I hope that you find something to help you break through and realize that again. You can curate. You can carefully consider and curate your own thoughts. You can have a new awareness about the things that you're putting in your mind, about the things that are limiting you from growing, the things that are limiting you, your vision, from seeing those possibilities. So there's a thing called a reticular activating system that's part of our brain. Just think about it as layers of filters. And over the years, we've been putting these filters in, just slowly putting them in. From the time you were a little toddler, just shoving these filters in from friends, from family. What does the world look like? Oh, I see how they're acting. Filter. Ooh. Oh, I saw they failed. Filter. I failed. Filter. I was embarrassed. Filter. I tried hard. Nothing happened. Didn't. Not going to do it again. Filter. We need to make sure we're seeing through the right lens and we can start removing those filters. I don't care that I failed when I was younger. I'm done with that. I don't care that I was hurt when I was younger. I'm done with that. I don't care that I didn't make it to a certain level in this thing. I'm done with that. I don't care if this person was mean and rude to me. I'm done with that. What we have to decide, do we want that to be a filter that we want? Because the more that those filters are in, the reticular activating system starts to see that. I always use an example of you go and buy a new car and you think you have the most unique car. It happens to be a yellow Volkswagen Beetle with a purple stripe down the side. This would be amazing if this happened and then all of a sudden you're out driving and you start seeing yellow Volkswagen Beetles with stripes down the side. Again, probably not because it's pretty or whatever, but again it's conditioning your mind to start filtering out things to see that thing going into 2024. What filters do you need to remove? Is that filter a filter that's layered with fear? Is that filter something that has to do with self doubt is that filter? And I'm not good enough is that filter. I just don't have the courage is that filter. I'm just an introvert, I can't step into. That's not the what I do is that filter. I don't have the creative outlet. I've never been that person. Is that filter. I'm not that person. Am I not that person? Who do you want to be? What person do you want to be? What filter do you want to start putting in there? I want to be courageous, I want to be present. I want to be compassionate. I want to create and generate new friends that inspire me. I want to generate new relationships that attract creativity, that allow me to have creative expression. I recently just added some of those filters. I recently added the new friend one and I've had so many good experiences because I decided to start saying yes to things because if I didn't say yes, I wouldn't make those connections. Missing opportunities, I'm missing possibilities because I had a limiting little switch in there that was making me want to say no. So I'm taking the no filter out. I'm going to start saying yes. I'm going to start saying yes to those things that I want in my life. But we have to say yes. We have to see beyond. We have to see the possibilities. We have to know we can take out filters and, and we can put filters in, we can do whatever we want. So I don't want it to be a head thing of what I know. Mindset is important, right? And there's lots of things out there. Mindset. There's great things on social media with growth mindset versus fixed mindset or like little things. I even did one about courage on my social media. But to stop and to know it at that level, to make a conscious choice, an extreme conscious choice, that you're ready to change that, that you're ready to shape that, that you're ready to evolve, that that's where the magic happens. So I hope that for you and anybody listening in 2024, you just take a minute. I'm not asking you to set goals for the New Year. I'm not asking you to do any of that. I'm asking you to go inside, to go internal, to be honest, brutally honest, more honest than you've ever been. If you want to journal about it, if you want to, whatever you want to do, create a vision board, I don't care. But be more honest than you've ever been. Those things that are creating stress in your life, the things that are creating stress in your life, how much of a role is fueling that energy that's creating that thing that you play more than you think you do, right? Is there chaos constantly in your life? Is there always chaos? Stop. If there's always chaos, there's probably a big chance that there's some mindset stuff and some energy and that's fueling that fire. If you're stagnant and just bored out of your mind and you're not interested, if you've lost interest, stop. How much of a role are you playing a part in that? If there's stress and overwhelm, that's where I've been. I get that one, that's for sure. But I play a role in that. I'm the one who keeps putting stuff on my plate. I'm the one who keeps. Who loves to create and do these things. I play a role in that. So I've had to say no to things to get in front of this camera and to not have any sort of script or any, like, research. And I'm just talking from my heart. I'm just talking from how I've operated in life and have been, and by the way, drop the ball many times and catch myself, right? And that's okay because this mindset piece is always evolving. This mindset piece doesn't stop. It's just like people who firm believer. I love my exercise. It's a lifestyle, right? It's consistent, it's daily. But when you find those things that fuel you, it's not work. So when I was at the gym listening to those podcasts, it wasn't work. It was super enjoyable. And then at the last 15 minutes of my podcast, 15 minutes of my workout. I'm like, okay, I need to listen to some music now. Great. Just put a little in. I put 40 minutes in, but it was enjoyable. I'm reading a couple good books right now that have to do with personal development, and it doesn't. It's not always one energy, one vibe to it. But my point is, when you find those things, whether it's books, whether it's music, whether it's podcasts, whether it's trying to reach out to new people, to engaging different conversations, I think part of our mindset problem we don't have. People also ask really good questions to us, and we really don't ask really good questions to people. We like to talk about the weather. We like to talk about, how was your day? We like to talk about these things. None of it is helping or pulling stuff out of us that's much richer in information. None of it is helping develop the skills that we need to move forward. And some people, it's not that about the weather. You wish they were just talking about the weather because they dump everything on you that can be really heavy. And that energy, vampire kind of energy, right? And it's, whoa, how's there a balance with all this stuff? But your mindset helps you realize what's going on, how you're interacting with the people in your life. How do you need to change that stuff? Right? Sometimes I just need to be more patient. I need to be a better. I need to be an active listener. Because my mindset subconsciously was like, I got things, really important things to do. I got to go here. I got to go here. No, I need to stop. Be present with this person, Be present with you guys, be present with my staff, whatever. I hope you get the point. And I look forward for 2024 to show up. And everybody can contribute right now to a better year by working and starting with yourself and just have fun. There's so many good people out there to listen to. There's so many. I felt like I was just lecturing you. I don't know if I was inspiring, but there's so many people that can lift you up. There's so many possibilities, things out there in today's world that you can reach out and grab a hold of. There's so many things available to you. If you're listening to this, you're fortunate that you have a phone. You can listen to a podcast, right? And you can pick from all these choices of what you decide to put into your mind. And how does that influence you and you don't always want to be this heavy, right? Like, it's fun to listen to some crazy comedians and just it's fun to have laughter, it's fun to have this. But to take the time to do this, to take the time to reflect on your world, your environment and your role in it is critical and again, the foundation of your potential and possibilities.
