Let’s inspire the world

David Boyle calls for researchers, analysts, and data specialists to collaborate on an annual case study about nature and sustainability. He wants to combine qualitative research, social media analytics, and big data into one high-profile project that could be presented at TMRE and inspire corporate investment in environmental best practice.

This project is designed to realize one big opportunity, and that is for more companies to use insight analytics and research for bigger, bolder decisions. They're not doing it. Not enough companies are embracing the tools that we have to make the kind of difference that we know they can make. Quite simply, not enough companies know what good looks like. Not enough companies are committing the right budget to insight and research projects. They're not picking the right vendors, and they're not setting the right ambitions for their research and analytics teams. How do we get them to see the power of insight? How do we get them to see the huge impact that our work can have? How do we get them to see best practice where we each excel in our field, but also when we collaborate across fields to unite data, to unite research, to unite insights, to tell one big, compelling story that makes a huge difference? Well, I believe we can do that by showing the world what great looks like. I believe we can do one big project together as an industry with a leader in each field. Qual analytics, social media, a leader in each field doing the absolute best work that they can do, collaborating together across companies likely to unite all those different fields together to tell one compelling story that moves people. A story that excites the insight people, analysts and the researchers in the room at the conference, but also a story that they can take back via video and written documents to inspire their CMOs and their CEOs and their boards to show them what great looks like and to say, I want that. I want to be able to do work as good as this. I need the budgets and the permission and the leadership from you to enable me to do work that looks just like this. How do we create those great case studies? Well, I think we all come together and we tell one story on one topic. We need a topic. What topic might bring everybody together? What topic might unite every industry? What topic could everybody get behind? How about the natural world? Let's all come together to research consumer perceptions, understanding frustrations, wants and needs around the natural world. Let's talk about sustainability. Let's show what great research looks like on that topic that will unite everybody in their excitement. It will enable us to tell the story in multiple ways in mainstream media as well as industry media, in every boardroom. It enables everybody to get on board and we're doing good in the world. This is corporate social responsibility for our companies as well. We can help contribute to the debate, help contribute to changing people's minds, to making our world a better place. So let's come together. Let's do the best work we can individually do. Let's loosely collaborate. Let's tell a story on stage, in the mainstream press and in boardrooms around the world of what great research and insight looks together when it's time. Done in the way that we know it can be, in the way it's not often done in the real world, in the way we wish we could share and tell more people about. We can make a difference. We can change the world if we do what we do in our best way possible. Plus, it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun. We need to inspire the researchers in the room at TMRE to go back to their bosses and drive change. We need to give them materials to do so. The video that we create as part of this project, the keynote presentation, the amazing demo of our capabilities, and the written materials you produce to go with it can be carried back to boardrooms around the world to show what great looks like in a non threatening but inspiring way and to unlock the budgets that we need in order to do the work that we know we can do. Insight should be inspirational. It should move us. It should excite us and scare us. It should make a difference. Many companies just aren't doing great insight work. Look at most of the projects that we get to work on. They're not that inspiring or that insightful. We hope they'll lead to bigger projects down the line, but they often don't. How do we show people what's possible? How do we get them to realize how big and exciting our work can be? And when we do amazing insight projects, most clients don't want to share that work. Most clients don't want it's shouted about around the world. It's locked in a vault. It can't be used to inspire. We need great work that we can use to inspire. I want to help each of you to do your best work, to tell your best story, to show your best selves and to inspire change in this industry. I get out of bed in the morning to try and help more people do great insight work. Okay, that's a slightly weird reason to get out of bed in the morning, but it's what excites me. It's why I volunteer my time to drive TMRE to chair TMRE every year. Standing up on stage is no easy feat for me. It's not how I want to spend my time, but it is one of the biggest differences I can make. Inspiring people to do better work, to do bigger work, to make a difference and I don't think it needs to be that difficult. We each know what great work looks like in our area. We just need an excuse to do it in a way that we can share. We need a platform, a stage. We need someone to coordinate us because no one vendor can tell the whole story. We need and quant. We need social media analytics and big data analytics. Let's unite to each tell our best story and to collectively tell the best story possible on one topic. Let's make this a moment that the world looks forward to, not just our industry. Let's make it a moment where we update the world on people's understanding of the natural world. Let's have the UN look forward to this case study every year. Let's have leaders like Leonardo DiCaprio or Greta Thunberg look forward to our work every year because it helps them to do what they get out of bed in the morning to do, which is to change people's minds. The first thing we need is to know if you're interested. We need to know if something like this sounds great. If it does work with us. We'll come up with a structure and a process together that enables you to do your best work in the easiest way possible. That enables us to bring it together to tell a story at TMRE and outside of TMRE to the world. We'll work out sample sizes and questionnaires and all that stuff if we want to do the project, if we think it's exciting, if we're committed to doing it. And we'll work out coordination between different vendors to tell that story if the will is there. If you're interested, please reach out. Let's jump on a call, let's kick ideas around. There's something here we can make work. And it will be the biggest, most exciting way to talk about research and to inspire the world to ask for better research, ask for better insight, to see what good can be done with it in the natural world and in their companies as well. Something just jumped through the woods there.
