Chasing money is for broke people while being rich is for rich people

Devon Canup argues that obsessing over money keeps you broke, while building wealth requires detaching from outcomes and focusing on consistent effort instead. He shares his own journey from insecurity to confidence, emphasizing that mindset shifts matter more than chasing quick results.
The months where I made the most amount of money were the months where I was the most detached from the result. The months that I didn't really give a shit about whether I made money or not. The months where I really didn't give a fuck and I did the work and I didn't care about. I had no expectations of what I was gonna receive in return of that thing. So the thing that you're looking for is detachment. And so what does detachment mean? It means to be detached. It means to not have an emotional investment into the outcome. It means to. To not care about the outcome. It means to have zero care and the outcome. But the thing is with detachment is you just need to figure out how to just do the work, how to do the thing, and just know that, just trust the process that you'll inevitably get to where you want to be. And so it's finding what the. Like in sales and business and marketing, we call it the leading indicators versus the lagging indicators. If you just focus on the leading indicators, what are the things that you gotta do, AKA the reps in the gym, AKA the phone calls that the number of dials that you have to make. It is inevitable that with the law of averages and as you get better, the result will come with it. So when it comes to sales, typically, you know, it's like if you're doing cold calling, you want to do like 200, 300 a day. If you inevitably do that many dollars a day or outreaches or whatever, you'll inevitably make a ton of Money. Same with YouTube. If you just focus on the leading indicator, which is getting videos out and then making videos better, you just get a lot of videos out. Like for me, I've done like probably over like 5, 000 videos now at this point on YouTube after just doing a lot of uploads, it's inevitable that I'll make a ton of money from YouTube. And so same thing with your life is to detach yourself from the results. It's like going to the gym, just doing the reps, doing the workout, not giving a about how you look in the mirror. You know, obviously you want to get ripped and jacked, but just kind of of being detached from that outcome and know that if you just consistently show up and do the work that you will be where you want to be. So the thing that you're looking for is detachment. And so the question is, how do you become detached? What's the strategy? How do you do that? Devin, Giving me some of that detachment energy or that stuff, that stuff that you do that makes you so rich and successful and so jacked and have an awesome, amazing life. And I'll give it to you inside of here because that's actually as soon as I learned the skill set. That's when I started, that's when I started making a ton of money. That's when I started to see the most amount of results. And the reason why you're not seeing results is because you give too many fucks, you care too much, you have such a high expectation that you're going to get rich if you do all this work and stuff and you care too much about it. Like you just, you're too emotionally invested. If like the business doesn't go your way, it puts you on a whole entirely different trajectory and pathway and stop doing the work that's needed to be done that's going to get you rich in the first place. Because the thing about money and the thing about success is it likes consistency, it likes persistence, it likes it when you are consistent with it and that you show that you're going to keep showing up regardless of if it's there or not. And that's the same with women, it's the same with friends, it's the same with people that you want to have in your life. It's the same with things that you want to have in your life is they like it when you are consistently showing up in a certain way regardless of what the outcome is. And because you are detached. So how do you become detached? So for me, when it came to detachment, I struggled with this. You may see me as this guy that's, you know, wearing expensive clothes and lives in a beautiful backyard and you know, living in multi million dollar houses and driving supercars and traveling the world. And that is who you see today. But that is not who I always was. I actually grew up in a small farm town. I had, you know, some pretty lower middle class, middle class family. I saw my parents lose it all. I grew up on a farm. I was a complete loser in school. I had zero friends. I was incredibly insecure and I was ultimately a complete loser. So it's okay if I call you guys a loser in my life, right? It's okay for me to call you guys a loser because I was one of those as well. And I am very, I relate to it more than anybody else. I was probably one of the biggest losers. And so for me to call you guys losers or brokeys or whatever, it's okay because I was that as well. I Used to be that. So I get you, I understand you. And sucks because it's like you see all these other people winning. You see other people just everyday people like you and I are making millions of dollars and having lots of success and, you know, we may not be seeing the results yet. And that was me. Now imagine this guy that was this nerdy kid, maybe was a little bit good at sports, did sports, but big nerd, didn't, was socially awkward, had no sort of charm or charisma like you see me today. I'm an extremely charming guy and everyone loves talking and working with me because I have just become so detached in life and I really just don't give a about what people think. I give a what people think, but I don't give a what people think. And so there was a book that I had to really read. Actually. There was this book that was like kind of like the tool to my success. I read this book like five, six, seven times. And I'll kind of teach you the concepts in the way that I see it. I think, you know, there's so many different. Like one person reading a book versus another person read a book or one person watching this video versus another people watching a video. They'll get kind of different things out of it. But the book for me was by Mark Manson. It was called the Subtle Art of Not Giving a. And that book was kind of like my key to success. It was that and also how to Win Friends and Influence people. Those were like by Dale Carnegie. Those are like my main books. But Total Art of Not Giving A. I had to read this book actually multiple times. It wasn't until I had pretty bad like, breakup with a girlfriend I was dating for like four years, I kind of like, you know, I started to see some success and results and stuff. And even before that, actually I read the book too. But I, you know, is I. I had hit rock bottom. This was when, you know, I was the most loser out of loser in my life. Like, I wasn't making money, you know, rent was due, I had no money, and I had to figure it all out. And it was when the results and the outcome meant the most. And so what I realized is we got to give a. About the things that matter the most. If you care too much about everything, then you're gonna care too much about all the wrong problems and all the wrong issues that aren't going to actually get you to where you want to go. And so it's a conscious effort for me to not care about things and even to this day, I have to. It's obviously a lot less. It's kind of like a muscle and like a skill that I've developed, but it is. I have developed this ability to not give a fuck about things. Like, I don't care. I do care, but I don't care. It's kind of like the way that I would put it is like, I care, but I don't care. And so for me, it's like. Like, for example. Like, as an example, I. I care about how I appear and how I show up every single day, but I don't care how I look necessarily. Like, I care how I look, but I don't care how I look. So the way that I do that is that. Wear really nice clothes. I make sure that I set it up. So it's like, it's effortless for me to look good every single day and to. To show up a certain way, but how I actually look, other than just kind of doing the things I do every day, I really don't give a. I don't care if there's a pimple on my nose or some. Like, I don't like in that. Like, I set myself up for success, but I don't give a. You know, like, if something's on my face or whatever. I have something. Like, I don't care if someone points it out. Oh, yeah, you like ketchup on your beard or something? Like, oh, yeah, it looks. It was like I was saving it for later. Like, I really don't give a. You know, I'll clean it up or whatever, but I just don't care. Same with this video. You know, it's like, I give a. I care. I want to make sure I'm showing up the right way. This airplane's flying over. But I don't give a. I'm just giving you guys the information because I know how valuable this is and how much this changed my life in my life. So how do you do this? You know, keep kind of going back to that. So. Thing is, is you have to. You can only give a. About so many things. You have to realize in life, there's only so many things that you can give a about. And let's just say there's like a meter. Let's say there's like 10 you can give every single day. Because if you. If you give too many about the wrong things, then you get distracted. And so let's say there's 10 things, even five things that you can give a about every single day. And you're limited and you realize that there's a volume to it. Kind of like how willpower works. And that's for a subject, for another video, is when you realize there's a limited quantity. How are you going to treat those that you give or the things that you care about versus if you feel like you have an infinite amount? Because that's the issue. I think everyone thinks they have an infinite amount of, like, care that they can have in the world, but you really don't. You have a limited amount because. And then it starts to. Then it starts to contradict itself if you care too much. And then you start to become a formless loser. Like I said I was a loser, so I can call you that too, or anybody. That is that, like, if you start to become a former. A formless loser, you have no form and you don't really stand for anything. And if anything, you're just. You're less than a man. You're none. You're. You have zero respect. No one can respect you because you care too much about everything. You care too much about what other people think about yourself, about all things. You know, how you show up, how you do things. And so the first thing to realize is no one gives a about you. Really. Like, no one's thinking about you. And if in reality they're thinking about themselves, they're thinking about, you know, most people, you think they care about you and how you look. They don't. They care about. They care about themselves. And they're going to forget. You know, as the saying goes, it's like when we're younger, we think that everybody cares about us, but then when we get older, we start to realize nobody cared us. Cared about us at all. And in fact, they just all cared about themselves. And even the people that you think care about you, you know, let's say family, friends, loved ones, these people that you think care about you the most, in reality, they just care about you for selfish reasons. You know, you have to be selfish to be selfless. They care about how you are, so that way they can feel better. You know, if you're in a, like, you know, let's say my mom, like, I love her and she obviously really cares about me, but she wants to make sure that, like, I'm doing good. So. So then selfishly that she can be feeling good as well. I know she's never gonna, like, forwardly say that nobody is. But in order for them to be doing good, they have to care that other people are doing good. And in reality, like I said, it's for selfish reasons. So you have to realize that what other people want for you is not what they really want. Typically when it comes to family and like them wanting things for you. You know, they say like, oh, I want you go to college, I want you to get a degree. I want you to, you know, like, go do all these things and then you can go like, I want you to like, I want this life for you. They really don't give a. About any of that stuff. What they care about is you to be happy and to do, you know, to find your passion in life and to do the things that make you happy. At the end of the day, they might be pissed if you tell them, no, I don't want to become a doctor and I'm dropping out of college. I've been there, done that. But in reality, they don't really care that you go to college. They just want you to be okay. They just want to make sure that you're healthy. They want to make sure that you are, you know, not in a position where of lacking that you're abundant, that you're able to do things in your life. And that's not. If that's not them, then they're just twisted like messed up people. Most people, they just want you to be happy at the end of the day. That's really it. They may not, they may pretend and like give you other information, but that's really it. So when you realize that, that that's all they really give a about, then what you will realize is none of it matters. And, but like, you know, don't get too far off on this whole like existential crisis here that nothing matters. So what's the point? That's like another topic for another video as well. But the main thing is you realize nothing matters. Time is limited here on this planet. Only so much time people treat you how you tolerate them treating you. So if you give people a reason to treat you like, if, if you tolerate people treating like, you'll continuously get treated like. And so either people respect you when you say, hey, stop treating me like that, or if they don't respect you, then that means they don't deserve your time and they don't deserve your presence. And that means it's time for you to move on, to not give a. Because anybody that really gives a shit, like anybody that wants the best for you, truly wants the best for you, they're not gonna, like, they're gonna treat you how you want to be treated and if they don't, then they don't really want what's best for you. They're selfish, they're limited, they're trying to put you in a box. And so I didn' want to be trapped in a box. I didn't want to have, you know, a life that was so limited and just built by others. I wanted. I wanted to be the main character in my own movie. I wanted to be the. I wanted to be Devin Canup. I didn't want to be whatever perception that they had in their life, the. The version of themselves that they always want like that, you know, like them putting themselves onto onto me. I wanted to be myself. I want to be my own person. I want to be Devin Canuck. And so what I realized is in order to be Devin can up, I did not give a about what other people think and then just do the things that are myself that are for myself. And so what I got out of this book after reading it multiple times. Like I said I would put this thing on on like 2x speed. I'd listen to it while I was at the gym for multiple weeks when I was really kind of like in my self development era. And what I came to the realization was at the end of it all, nothing matters and no one really gives a about you. And in reality, it's what you give a about that matters and what shapes your reality. So it's what are your priorities. For me, I wanted to live a cool ass life. I wanted to have cool friends. I wanted to do cool stuff. I wanted to become the best version of myself. I wanted to help a lot of people, other people that were in the circumstances. Like, like I was when I was, you know, a loser that was insecure and had nothing going for his life. I had to become. So what I realized is I had to become detached from this book. I had to become detached. I had to not give a. For me. You might see me living this cool lifestyle. I really don't give a. I do, I do care. It's kind of cool. It's pretty cool. But at the end of the day, it doesn't define me. I don't let these things define me or like these specific things. I like the lifestyle kind of. I create the lifestyle. But I don't need to be at this house. I don't need to be doing this business that I have. I don't need to have the friends that I have. I don't need the relationships that I have. Like, are they nice? Yeah. Could I survive without them? Of course I don't need them. I don't need the friends that I have. They're nice. I appreciate them. I'm grateful, but I don't need it. There's always other people. There's always other ways to make money. There's other. There's always other money. There's always other women. There's always other other people that I can surround myself with. It's hard with parents and family. I understand that. Because, you know, you feel like there's only them. And so it does take a little bit of a different process, but there is a phase where you kind of have to become detached from that and just not care. You have to not care, so then you can care. So the best way to become detached little game plan for you guys is to start realizing you only have so many to give every single day. Some days I have no to give my family. Like, I will drop my. Like if in on a drop of a hat. Like, I will be there for them if they need something. But if that's not the case and that's not being abused, as long as it's not being abused, then like I said, I will be there for them immediately. But if not, I really don't. Like, I. I have other things I need to, like, focus on that day or the other things I need to, like, I need to put. Put my into sometimes. Same with relationships. Like some of my friends. Like, there's a lot of days, like I, like I care about them, but I'm not gonna do everything for them. I'm gonna focus on myself. And then, you know, when it's not necessarily convenient, but, like, when it makes sense, when I've, like, have been selfish for a period of time and I've been able to do the things that I need to get done, then I can give a about them. So it's like, it's a prioritization. It's asking yourself, what is the priority? What is the number one thing that is the most important? And then setting priorities constantly and asking, what areas of my life do I want to focus on? Sometimes it's about friends. Sometimes it's about just enjoying life. And, you know, I have so many, like, good memories in this backyard of, like, hanging out with, like, friends that I haven't seen in a long time. We'll hang out, like, in the jacuzzi, and we'll have some drinks and, you know, smoke some cigars and have a good time. And that's what that moment cares about. And then I'm detached from My business, I really just don't care about it. I don't care about, like, the thing that's going on. I just focus on what's in front of me. Then majority of the time, it's about my business. It's like focusing on providing the best product, the best service that I possibly can, and doing the best that I possibly can, and being detached from the outcome that we're getting, but instead prioritizing creating the best thing that possibly can be made. And when I do the reps, when I just make the best product that I possibly can, I know inevitably I would just have the most. I will make more money than everybody else and I will consistently grow, and I will consist of consistently be doing better. If I just keep focusing on the activity which is making a great product, building a great business, building relationships with the people inside of my business, and developing people into becoming the best version of themselves. I know if I just do that, I know inevitably things will perform better. I know that I will make more money. I'm detached from making more money, but I'm giving a about building the best company that I can build in the. Like focusing on the people, building the best relationships, growing them into the best versions that they can't. That they themselves can be, and not giving about the little details, but instead focusing on the overall mission. You need to become detached. I was detached when I first hit my first $10,000 a month. I was detached when I hit my first $40,000 a month. I was detached when I met my girlfriend that I'm dating now or any beautiful woman I've ever did in my past. I was detached. I was detached when I bought my first supercar. I was detached when I moved into this house. I was detached when I became the best version of myself and I became insecure. I be. I was attached when I made this detached when I made this video. I'm detached in helping you guys become success, like, become successful. I am attached, like, I do give a about making the best content possible and doing the best that I can, but I realize that I can lead a horse to water, but I can't force it to drink. So I'm detached on whether or not you drink. Watching this video, I'm committed to and give a about trying to make it the best damn water in the, you know, give you guys like, the. The cleanest, most purified water out there, the most hydrating water out there, but I can't force you to drink it. So I'm detached from that. I'm Detached from you guys consuming my content. I'm detached from how many views these videos get. Signals are nice and I love signals and I love making the best videos that I possibly can. But when I start making content that's like off the wrong path, that maybe it gets more views but it's hard for me to be consistent with it and I feel like it's ridiculously repetitive and I don't have a good time doing it. I'm detached from the views that I'm getting on the videos and I focus on more so making the best content for my old self. Maybe it might, it might be the hardest pill to swallow. It might be the like the most unsexy video ever. But I give a about making the real content. I care about creating the best thing I possibly can. And I'm detached from the result that it specifically gets in that day or that week or that month or that year. I know that if I just keep constantly focusing on what is the best thing that I can make for you, watching this video, whether or not it's something that you want to hear, I know inevitably I will change your life and I know inevitably I will get the end result that I ultimately wanted from day one. But I have to be detached on that happening now. I have to be detached on the time frame. I have to be detached on the outcome. Now it doesn't mean don't set smart goals and don't set goals that, you know, have a time frame and like an actual quantifiable measurable thing. But I'm detached on the actual result that I get from it. And I do really evaluate. I read the comments and I listen and I figure out how I can constantly do better. I give a about that, but I'm detached on the specific result because I on the little nuance results. I give a about the overall mission which is 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I want to make more people more millionaires than anybody else out there. I want to create more success, I want to create more stories. I want to be have the craziest success stories out of anybody out there. And that's all I give a about. That's what I care. I want to change more individuals lives on a deeper level than anybody else has changed. So I don't give a how many video views each video individually gets. In the grand scheme of things, I'm recording thousands of videos, hundreds of videos, thousands of videos, creating tons and tons of products, creating all sorts of, you know, whatever the best thing that my mind can come up with. I'm detached on the detached on the individualized results. And I'm. I give a. And I prioritize the overall mission. That's what you need to do. You need to give a. About the overall mission. What's the overall goal? You get one ass, you have one big to give or a bunch of small little. And give. Like get your self and your goals and your dreams and everything that you want to do. Just push to the side like your fucking janitor number two in the movie. You want to be the main fucking character and give a fuck about one big main thing, or you want to be janitor number two and be the person that's like gives a fuck about all these things and just always gets pushed to the side and not the main character in the movie. So what you're looking for is to be detached from the outcome. As soon as you detach yourself, like you give a fuck where you're detached on the individualized outcomes of the individualized actions. And you focus on the system as a whole, you focus on the overall actions that you do, you'll be exactly what you're looking for. You must become detached.
