You should master the art of detachment

Devon Canup argues that obsessing over outcomes blocks success. He went from chasing $10,000 a month to earning $42,000 in one month by focusing on mastering YouTube instead of money itself. Detachment, he says, lets success flow naturally as a byproduct of committed work.

You should master the art of letting go. Some of us think that holding on to a result or an outcome or a person that we are becoming is what allows it to become our reality. But instead, a lot of times it's when you let it go is when you attract it to you and you live the life that you want. My name is Devon Canup. I've been able to make about $10 million in my 20s now. And me making this video, I'm not trying to be some sort of like woo-woo energy manifestation guru or person, but instead somebody who is just like speaking from truth of like my success, my life, and just giving it to you straight up as it actually is. So here's the thing you have to understand about success, about wealth, about money, about girlfriend relationships, because I feel like I have it all. You know, I have an amazing relationship I've been in for 5 years. I've been able to make a ton of money. I have the best lifestyle that one could ever comprehend or have is being able to travel to a new place every single week, being able to spend any amount of money on anything that I ever want, whether it be personal bills and all that stuff, or it being like something stupid or lavish, uh, like some $50,000 watch that I definitely don't need. But here's the thing you have to understand about success, is that you will never get it if you are constantly making it the epitome of your life. If you put it on a pedestal, if you put success on a pedestal, you are telling yourself that you will never become successful. You see this all the time when you go to concerts, shows. I went to like, uh, a couple concerts the last couple weeks, and you just see the, the crowd of people. I went to Shakira concert. You can see there's people that just give so much praise to the, to the actor, the actress, the celebrity, and they, they put all of their, uh, possibilities of life into this person. They, they view them as just an otherworldly being, not allowing themselves to ever be anything like that. Like, oh yeah, I could never be Shakira. I could never be uh, whoever you could think of, Drake, whatever you listen to. And a lot of people do that to themselves. Like, they idolize their celebrities, and yet they don't idolize themselves. They don't realize that, that when they put in the hard work, when they have the determination, when they have the confidence, and they are just constantly showing up for themselves, that they will achieve something just as noble or just as worthy of, uh, of praises, of success of these celebrities. Yet they just never give themselves the opportunity to because they always put— project their beliefs onto their situation. Just, oh, I could never— I could never be that person. Someone like me can never be like that. And it's like you hold on to this idea of success so tightly, you strangle it. You strangle success. It's like a— it's like a cat. You love the cat, you think the cat's beautiful, uh, you want the cat in your life. So what do you do? You strangle the cat so that way it can never leave. Well, the cat can never eat, it can never go outside, it can never get the fitness in its body that it needs. And because you strangle it so tightly and hold on to it so dearly, the cat dies. And if you've ever had cats, you know that in order to have cats be all over you, you have to not care about the cat. It's the same when it comes to success. It's the same when it comes to anything in life that is feminine in nature, like money, opportunity, success, relationships. Uh, if you're a man, is, uh, is, is very feminine being attracted to it. You have to be in a masculine state in order for it to be attracted to you. It actually talks about this in Psalms in the Bible, and I don't have the exact quote in my head, but it refers to— it refers to success and money as a feminine. And the reason being is because you attract success. You become somebody who is successful, and success and opportunity is attracted to the person who is the most competent, who's the most ready, who is the person who is the most persistent, the most dedicated, the most willing to show up then the money comes. I remember so badly I wanted to make $10,000 a month. That was my goal. If I could just make 10 grand a month, my life will change. Maybe you've said that yourself. I remember so vividly, I was just always like, and inanimate, I need to make 10K, I need to make 10K. When I was like, when I make 10 grand a month, everything will change. And yet the day never came with that mindset. Like I was constantly just like, I need to make like whatever it takes, whatever it takes, whatever it takes. Then eventually one day I gave up on that goal. Actually, I gave up on trying to make $10,000 a month. Like, I still wanted to make it, but I was just like, you know what, I'm not gonna make this my only goal. And all at that same time, I came across some YouTube channels that were making $20,000 a month. But in reality, you know, they were getting like 2, 3, 4, 5 million views a month. And I told myself, you know what, I want one of those YouTube channels, I want a YouTube channel that's making that amount of views, that would just be really cool to have that amount of people watching my videos on a regular basis. So what did I do? I dedicated myself to the act of getting really good at making those videos and getting those same amount of views. I was like, yeah, that'd be cool if I make a bunch of money off of this, but I just really want to get good at making these videos. And lo and behold, in 14 days, I ended up hitting a million views in a single day off of making these Reddit YouTube videos that I found. And that month I ended up making $9,000. The next month I made $18,000. And the third month I made $42,000 in a month. Why do I share this with you? Well, for one, to tell you how fast your life can change when you apply what I'm talking about inside of my videos, but also how fast my life actually changed when I changed the priority and the focus. Instead of making money my god, or making money my idol, or the thing that I was pursuing. Instead, when I made it just like, yeah, that'd be like, that'd be a nice byproduct. But instead, I'm gonna get really good at this thing that ultimately does pay really well. And it's that slight shift in the mindset That changed everything for me. Instead of doing, making the videos for the sake of like, oh, how much money do I make on that video? Instead I was like, oh, I wonder how many people can enjoy my content, the videos that I'm making. And it wasn't like I was making videos about anything I was necessarily passionate about, but it was just more so I was falling in love with the process of becoming somebody who's really good at making this content. And obviously I had some YouTube experience at the time. I've already been doing YouTube for a year. I tried all these different things out. I got to making a couple thousand dollars a month and And it was just barely enough to scrape by. But here was this opportunity. I didn't really care about it being successful in the sense of like it had to be successful. And it was something that I was just personally endeavoring in the sense of like for me to get good, for me to give value to people, and for me to fulfill a just, I guess, like in my own personal interest of seeing how far it could go. And that ended up completely changing my life, getting me to make $40,000, $42,000 in a month., just in a few months. And it was that simple mindset shift. You must practice letting go. I love this quote from Sun Tzu that I wrote down over here, which is that there is opportunity amidst the chaos. And it's when you just fully lean yourself into the, the chaos that's in front of you and the opportunity of the world that we live in. And with AI, with social media, with, uh, all these online businesses and internet businesses, or just even life in general. That if you just trust yourself in the process, you have a trust fall and trust that you're a smart and intelligent person, that you will inevitably be able to completely just find the gaps in the thing. You will see the opportunities and you will take advantage of the opportunities, yet you don't allow yourself to. Everything has to be perfect, the timing has to be right, you're looking for the right set of knowledge and then the right moment in the right time when it will never come. And the thing that separates you from everybody else that's living the life that you want, like including myself, is because— is, is you are trying to look for every single possible problem or outcome that is going to end up leading you to failure and not being enough. Instead, start pursuing the worthiness of the endeavor. Stop pursuing what's going to happen when you get rich, and instead start pursuing who you are and how fun it is, and just the process of you learning and just getting really good at making something that millions of people are going to enjoy. And when you do that, when you just fall in love with the process, when you focus on the, the, the journey and not just the destination, the destination will come and you won't care. You get to making $40,000 a month and you don't really care about the $40,000 a month that you're making because you just know that if you just constantly keep providing value to people, the money will just come as a natural byproduct. You're squeezing opportunity and success to death. Because you're holding so tightly onto it because you know how much it will change your life. And that's why you will never become successful until you understand this concept that you must detach yourself, must detach yourself from the moment, you must detach yourself from, from the outcome, you must detach yourself from the purpose. And instead, attach yourself to the possibilities, attach yourself to the opportunity cost of not taking action, of the, of the skill sets and the person that you're becoming in the process. And through that, everything will come as a natural byproduct. You ever see those interviews with like millionaires or like really successful people and you can tell like they almost just like don't really care about success that much? Like they have it, yeah, but they're just so nonchalant about it. Like, oh yeah, you know, I made like $3 million last month. Um, but anyways, yeah, it's like beautiful weather that we have going on. You're like, what? What did this person just say? And it's just because like success is just a natural byproduct byproduct of who they are and their gifts of the person that they are in the day-to-day life. Money, success, life, all these things just don't really matter to the person compared to just being really good at what they do, loving life, enjoying their life, and just focusing on everything. I feel like the more money that I make, it's like the weirder and weirder it gets talking about the money that I make. The, the more money I make, the more I don't want, like like, I, I don't really want to work to make the money. It's like, more so it's just like, okay, how do I create something that's a good enough idea and putting the right people in charge of making that idea happen, and then just seeing how it plays out. And it's just figuring out like, what is it that people want? What is it that people need? What is it that people desire? And it's just providing that. And I just know that when I give people what they've been looking for, like me making these videos right now, I know that you guys have like these conversations in your head 24/7 Will I ever become successful? Will I ever be enough to make this amount of money? Is it even possible? Can I ever do this? You know, you're looking this stuff up all day, you're seeing all these people successful all day, and you know, you're trying to figure out what to believe. And my goal is to be like an earworm inside of your head just telling you like, yeah, you can frickin' do this shit. Like, go step up to the plate and make it happen. And it's like, I know that there's a desire out there, I know there's a demand there. What do I get paid for making these videos? I don't know. I think I made like $2 on the last video that I made. I really don't give a shit. And it's more about making sure that I just make something that's really freaking good that people love. And it's just whatever happens happens. And just kind of like letting you guys dictate the result and the outcome of all of this. It's that detachment, it's that not caring, it's that, it's that sharing of the— leading the horse to the water and then just letting the horse drink, do its thing. Let's just make sure the water's clean, it's really good, and the horse knows where the water's at. And I just kind of let everything else play on its own. I love the concept of like, if you want to, if you want to get really good at selling drugs, all you have to do is let them try the product. And that concept is so funny to me because it's like, they don't have to be some crazy salesperson. They don't have to be some sort of like, you know, insanely forceful person. But instead they're just like, yeah, here, try it out. See if you like it. It's just such an addictive product. And if it's really good, it gets people to want to constantly come back to it. If you treat your life and the product that you make, the success, the content you make, the videos you make, the things you sell, the— just the person that you are on a regular basis. If you're just that good, things will come to you. Opportunity will come to you. Life will come to you. Everything will be running towards you at full force. It's just that most people never give themselves that opportunity because they're so afraid of what others will think of them. They're so afraid of letting go a little bit. They're so afraid of letting go of the little that they hold on to, the little amount of money that they hold on to that they're never willing willing to give it up to see everything. It always cracks me up how much people tip at restaurants. You know, they're always like, I gotta tip 15% or 20%. Me, I try to tip like 30 to 40%, okay? Is typically what I try to tip. And it's like, the reason why I do that is because I know that if I hold on to money so tightly, I probably have bigger issues going on. Like, as in, like, I am so attached to this money that I have such a tough time letting it go. But when I do that extra little splurge, I pay a little bit extra for something even though I probably shouldn't have. If I pay a little bit of a bigger tip, if I splurge a little bit on spending money on things that just really don't matter that much, whether it be a hotel room or random everyday things, getting dessert at dinner or something. When I splurge that extra little money, it's telling myself that I'm letting go, I'm detached, I don't need to hold on so tightly to finances, to the money, to the outcome of whatever it is that is happening. And instead of I'm putting it into God's hands and saying, hey, I'll let you decide. I'll just do my best at being the best version of myself, and I'll let you decide the outcome. And it's when you do that, that the outcome and the life and the, the circumstances and the situations that you live completely change. And you can only really comprehend that once you start to practice this and fully, truly believe it and live by this methodology, or live by this philosophy, which is that you must become detached in order to get everything that you want in your life. It may not make any sense, but if you ever— if you watch The Odyssey— I just saw The Odyssey in theaters last weekend, a phenomenal movie, it was great. I watched it like 10 PM, was watching all the way till 1 AM, and it was like, had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. In that movie, Odysseus, in order for him to get through the punishment of the gods and to get through, to leave and finally be done with all these trials, he must let go. He has to put himself on this dinky little raft that's like basically 3 pieces of wood tied together, send himself out to sea, and just let Poseidon and Zeus take at him in the ocean and, and figure it out. He ends up waking up on the beach in his home country— to not spoil the plot too much— but, um, he ends up getting to where he wanted to go this entire time only when he surrendered, only when he gave in to the process and gave up everything and just trusting the gods and what they gave to him. And I, I love that metaphor for life, which is just like, it's only when you completely let go of things, it's only when you completely just surrender to the activity in front of you, but you fully commit yourself, you fully commit your body, mind, your being, and everything towards the activity, and getting really good at what it is that you have to do, going all in on the activity, going all in on the thing that you know will get you to where you're trying to look and go, that it's when it finally happens. And yet so many people, they half-commit. They dip their toes in the water. They don't fully jump into the water. They like the idea of success. They like the idea of being rich. They like the idea of having money and freedom and financial freedom and, and all these different freedoms in life, yet they don't fully commit to it. They don't fully embody the decision of, I am going to be rich, successful, and free. They don't fully commit and do the things that they know they need to do to achieve the outcome. Instead, they're just living somebody else's projection of what you should live. They watch a few of these videos and, yes, I have to be rich because so-and-so told me. The reality is, is that you will never get rich unless it's your idea, unless you fully decide, unless you fully commit, and you just allow whatever outcome to happen happen. And that's when everything changes and everything starts to live the life that you've been looking for all along. And I'm telling you this from my personal experience, okay? That's all I really have inside of videos is to just share my experience with you is that you need to let go, you need to trust the process, you need to do the freaking work, and everything else will just come as a part of the byproduct. No manifestation like woo-woo crap, but instead just like, what's the goal? What do you want? Detach yourself from the outcome. Like, have an outcome, detach yourself from it, and then just do what you think will get you to that outcome with your entire like being put into it. If you do that, my friend, there's absolutely zero reason you can't be successful, richer, living the better life, and doing exactly what you want in your life. So, love you all. I'll see you all in the next one.
