Escaping your 9 to 5 job feels hard because of this

Most people stay in jobs they hate because of comfort, fear of judgment, and social pressure to conform. A story about Alex shows how recognizing these barriers is the first step to breaking free and building something of your own.
Escaping your 9 to 5 job feels hard because of this. The comfort zone is a psychological state where one feels safe, in control and experiences low levels of anxiety and stress. Staying within the zone limits personal growth and risk taking. The brain's amygdala, responsible for processing fear and anxiety, becomes more active when facing unfamiliar situations. This heightened activity can trigger a fear response, discouraging people from stepping out of their comfort zone. And it makes sense. Our brain has been evolving over the past 100,000 years, and for 95% of it, it was trying to just keep us alive. And so a lot of these traits and behaviors that we have now currently don't necessarily serve us in the 21st century anymore. We don't have to worry for predators as much anymore to get food. All we have to do to go is to go to the supermarket. And we live in an entirely different world these days. So we had to find the ways that our biological biology holds holds us back. And it's not just the comfort zone that holds us back. We're afraid of getting cast out of the circle or dying. Social conformity is the tendency to align one's attitudes, beliefs and behaviors with those of the group. Research in social psychology, such as Solomon Ash's conformity experiments, demonstrates that individuals often conform to group norms, even when they contradicted personal beliefs. Fear of judgment and rejection by peers, family, and society can significantly impact decision making. Neuroscientific studies reveal that social rejection activates brain regions associated with physical pain, making the fear of non conformity powerful and real. And if you don't understand Solomon Ash's conformity experiments, I will break it down for you. Or if you don't know what they were, because I didn't know before making this video. But imagine we have this water bottle right here. It is green, right? Unless you're colorblind, maybe you have a bit of an issue with this. But for the sake of the example, let's say that this water ball is green. What they did was, is they took a group of six regular people that were just average people off the street. And then they took six people that were part of the experiment, that were hired for the experiment. And so what they would do is they would flash like lines on the screen. But let's just say they flash colors and shapes on the screen. And what they would do is they would put one person amidst the six people that were a part of the experiment and they would show. They would show, let's say, this green water bottle. And at first everybody would conform and they would just be like, okay, cool, it's a, it's a green water bottle. Yes. So everyone would say it's great. And then what would happen throughout the experiment is they would all start looking at each other and they would start saying, no, this water bottle. Like they would show, you know, let's say a red water bottle. And they'd be like, no, that's not a red water bottle, that's, it's a blue one. An obviously wrong answer. And the person I was part of the experiment would typically a lot of times be influenced by the group. And so through this experiment, they found a lot of things to explain how we work as human beings and societally and peer pressure. And they found that I think it was like a big chunk, like 5, 10, 20% of people would conform to the group even if it was wrong. There was also another big chunk of people that were like, you know, 5, 10, 20% of the group that wouldn't conform and just would always just say whatever the right answer was. And then there was a good majority of the group, like whatever the rest of it, 50% of the group would conform like half the time with the group, but then also say the right answer half the time they're a little bit more conflicted. And so that is that same exact thing as what's happening in our day to day lives. When it comes to working a job and when it comes to following the system that most of us follow is most of us don't realize that there are other options and we just conform to what we have in front of us. Even if there are other right answers that are getting fed to us, especially with our parents, with our counselors, with our friends that they're all saying go to college and go get a job, then our brain has no choice or no option most of the time, unless we are rebellious. But to follow what society tells us to do and it makes complete logical sense. And these fears and pressures can make doom, make it feel like doom is imminent. But we really do have two options. We can either let life happen to us or make life happen because of us. To illustrate this, let's dive into a story about someone who made a bold choice to break free from these constraints. And this isn't a real story. I will say it's. It's made up from stories that I have heard from talking to many people as I hope a lot of people get out of quitting their job. So I'm just gonna use a made up story just so I'm not like Making anybody feel offended in this video. And so it seems as instead of seeing failure as a setback, he was able to view failure as a learning opportunity. And as he delved deeper into his business, Alex began to experience significant personal growth. He learned to manage his time effectively. He developed new skills and he became more resilient. Each small success boosted his confidence. Despite his progress, Alex still faced societal pressure. Friends and family doubted his choices, often questioning his his unconventional path.
