How to make $10k a month as a freelancer

Devin Knapp breaks down how to hit $10k a month as a freelancer in video production. He covers client management, building an expert niche, and scaling through an agency model instead of trading time for money.
Everything. So I find that like, like Charlie Munger talks about the inverse problem solving or inverse, you know, inverse problem solving. And looking at the way of like, how do you not provide value and how do you not. How do you make your stuff more like just not worth it? So here we'll do like the anti, anti price value. So it's like, okay, so some of the things that makes for a shitty experience or makes your thing less valuable is deadlines and not hitting them. So this is pretty far. Often, you know, someone will say something will take like two or three fucking days and then it ends up. And then it gets to two, three days, they haven't made any progress and then it just goes on and on and on and on. So as long as you're not this person, like right away you're going to be better than probably like 60, 70% of production freelancers and stuff. So as long as just communicating your time frames and stuff like that. So most of you guys, like you, you get like, you, you say you're going to take some time and, and then it's okay if projects take longer than expected. You know, this happens all the time with my company with so many different projects. But it's just like when the, it isn't, isn't communicated when you're finding out, like as soon as you find out that something's going to take longer, maybe you had another project come up that you weren't expecting or you forgot about, communicate it to the client immediately instead of waiting, you know, three days or whatever. Some obvious, these are like the obvious ones. So we'll go to some of like the less obvious things. So first of all, if we go to like, essentially what is the value? Like what am. What is my goal as the person employing you, as the person that owns these YouTube channels is I want to get fucking rich. That is my goal inside of here. So like, I'll show you guys real quick. So my goal is to be rich as fuck off of these YouTube channels. As in, like, I want to make a ton of money. First of all, I want to make money so then I can have freedom. Second of all, I want to make something I'm really proud of. So then when people ask me how I made money, they're like, oh, like I can say like something fucking cool. Like I own a bad videos about, you know, the seasons or you know, like rain sound. I make rain sound videos and essentially I want to make money so then I can pay you more so then you do a better job. Or I Have higher caliber people working for me and then we're all rich together is kind of the goal here. So capitalist capitalism at its finest. So what we needed to figure out is what is the things that make money on YouTube? It depends on the market we're looking at. It depends on the competition. It depends on like the market competition. It depends on the environmental situation of what is going on inside of our market. At the end of the day, the thing that makes us the most money out of anything when it comes to your work is views. It has nothing to do with ctr. It has nothing to do with, you know, like sometimes as some stuff to do with AVD and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, it's views. Views are the things that get us results. And so you get us more views, we're going to want to pay you guys more money. Obviously some people are jackasses and don't know how to like, monetize their actual content, their audience and stuff like that. And I help people actually figure out how to like make the right content, pick the right ideas and stuff like that. But you want, you want people, you want to get lots of views. So your job as the freelancer is you want to find somebody that has a good mission. You want to find somebody that has like a good, we call it like in business with the North Star. So we want to find someone that's like, hey, yeah, we want to be over here on this North Star. And you want to find the people that have really good, concise, like direction on where this goes, which I mean, like an idea sake, you know, what they view as like kind of the perspective of the channel and like where it's going to go and very good, strong direction and a very clear understanding of where we're going. And so for you as a freelancer, you want to avoid any projects that don't have a clear vision. So kind of my next stage inside of here is one like someone that sucks and doesn't provide value is someone that doesn't have a clear vision. Those people are the ones that are like, you know, like, if they're not able to help curate the vision, then that's gonna be a tough time. So what a lot of this comes down to is like, how do we curate this North Star? What is it gonna look like is we look at, first of all, you know, what's going on in the market, what are the videos that are getting tens of millions of views and what are they doing that's different than everybody else? That's getting, you know, like 200,000 views on a long format video. So for you, as soon as you get hired by somebody, whether it's as a scriptwriter, a voice act, scriptwriter, video editor, thumbnail designer, your mission, your sole mission, as soon as you figure out what the project is, is figuring out what is it that distinguishes your, your role. Let's say the video editing. We'll take the video editing as an example. What is the, what is the difference of the videos in the marketplace that. What is the difference of the videos in the marketplace that have 10 million views versus the videos that have 10,000 views? You should have better knowledge on this than any else. What is a 10 million view video? What is a 10,000 view video? And then also what are parallel niches or parallel industries that this content that like that, that is similar. Let's say that you get hired for, let's say a basketball YouTube channel and you're the video editor for what are the baseball channels doing? What are the top basketball channels doing? Obviously, but what are the football channels doing? What are the soccer channels doing? What are all these things and, and pulling them apart from the video editing perspective. And so when it comes to video editing, there's a lot of different categories. You know, first of all, there's the music. What type of music do they use? Can you find the exact. Like for you? You want to find the exact songs, like, almost like know the other team's production better than they probably know it Be like, oh yeah, they use this song called Funky Monkey at 20 seconds and then like from 20 seconds to like 72 seconds, they use a song, it's called, it's called Bananas Gone Wild. You know, it's like you have the whole playlist that you're able to find and go find this thing. And then also like the fonts, you were able to find the exact fonts that the person had. They were using Montserrat here and then they were also using some Grow Bold over here, you know, and then they were using like they were using, you know, you know, almost like the exact pixels. Like you, you understand the production better than them. What else? Fonts, music, you know exactly where they find the clips. You found all the different sources of where they found these videos or these visuals or the images or how they were produced. You probably even know the person that actually did this. What else? So you got that, you got, you know, the transitions that they use, the animation, like the, the sound effects. Essentially, we'll tie this all into value and how this makes sense. So essentially you want to have a clear understanding of what it is, why that video did so well, like, why did it make so much money? And like in your role and from your perspective, it's not so much about like necessarily breaking down, like trying to study the shit out of this video, but it's just kind of like, see, what are the clear, distinct differences of the 10,000 view video and then the 10 million view video. And not just that. Like, I think a big issue too is I see people, they saw this stuff two years ago and then they were trying to apply it to now. But what is the stuff that's working right now? 3 million view videos. What is this stuff? It's, it's knowing the industry better than anybody else. This is value. This when you understand this, when you understand all these little micro things and when it comes to scriptwriter to try to find out how do they do it, how do they write their hooks and everything like that, you're going to get more views than anybody else on YouTube. You're going to be the person that is the. You got to kind of be a little bit of like the expert of your field. But that is what, what money is. If, if you were someone that is the expert at writing videos or at editing videos or writing scripts, you'll get paid more than anybody else. And so it is creating, you know, a clear vision and declining anything that doesn't have a clear vision or like that is out of your capabilities of success. Here's the thing is, I see another, another big caveat I see with a bunch of freelancer, like a lot of production freelancers is they are saying yes to everything because they're like, there's money attached to it. And that is one of the biggest mistakes that I see happen. Like you, let's say that you're an expert in sports and then someone comes to you and like sports YouTube videos and stuff like that. And someone comes to you and they're like, hey, I want to do a, you know, I want to like, you're doing like sports documentaries and someone comes to you and they're just like, hey, I want to do a, some other type of format. I want to do like a narration compilation of, let's say body cam channels or something like that. And you're like, yes, I'll do it because there's money attached to it. Instead, make friends, have people that are experts at that and refer people over to your friends that are good at that production style. So then when they get clients that Want to do your expertise, they send them over to you and just become the expert at your niche. Because then what will happen is if anybody wants a basketball channel and they want to make a ton of money and they want the best fucking editor in the industry, they come to you. This is what curates value. Okay, so now that we've kind of gone through the pros, like what, what makes like something not valuable and what makes something valuable? Let's jump over into the math over here now. Okay, so now that we kind of broken that apart. So now there's kind of two ways essentially of doing this is you can either kind of go, you know, you got to think like, okay, how do we get to something that's $10,000 a month? You know, if you're bringing $10,000 a month of value to somebody, then that means you need to generate them probably something in return of. I usually like the 10% rule. So you need to try to generate somebody like $100,000 a month worth of value. So in order for you to do that, you really need to be on top of your freaking game. And in YouTube that converts over to, you need to be able to get 20 million views a month worth of value that you're able to provide to get a client that it will, you know, that will pay you $10,000 a month. I have people that I pay, you know, some, you know, like six figure salaries. And a lot of these people, they're providing on the low end, $100,000 of value. Some of them, you know, they provide significantly more. I have some people, I pay, you know, like 200, $300,000 worth of value. And I pay them 15, $20,000 for the value that they provide to my company or my businesses. And so you want to, you got to think, okay, like if I want to make 10 grand a month, that means I need to generate 20 million views. If you want to make 20 grand a month, you know, then that means you need to probably produce double that. So let's say 40 million views a month. That sounds crazy, but there are channels doing that. It's not, it's not possible, you know, if you want to, if you want to make 20k a month. So other option, okay, so now obviously that's that option. Now you can go a little bit more kind of like agency route. This is kind of like more sole independent contractor route. Now you can kind of go a little bit of an agency route. So if you're charging to five people $2,000 a month. So first of all at this rate, you're kind of going to be a little bit more like a consultant. If you're charging like $10,000 a month, you're going to have more consulting experience more than anything. You could totally do an agency. It's going to be a little bit difficult having one client pay that much and doing an agency you can totally build it around. I've seen it be done, you know, kind of build a whole system. You probably want to be a little bit more around the $20,000 a month range and then having, let's say a whole team that you pay a total of, let's say like five to ten thousand dollars a month. So you're able to profit ten grand. But yeah, so if you're trying to make, okay, so you have five clients at $2,000 a month each. So those, you know, you got to think, okay, the quantity of videos, if you're doing 40 million views a month, either you have some freaking stellar ass quality, you know, quality is like insanely high, or you have a good like quantity and quality route is usually kind of like, let's say that you have these both kind of like decent, like pretty solid, or you just have fucking insane quality. And then you know, like producing once a week instead of, let's say like three times a week or so. And so, and a lot of this is going to be suited like you're gonna realize the more views that you're trying to get. It all comes down to what's the idea that you're, that you're getting behind. And either you need to lead that or you need to find the person that has a really clear North Star. And turning down, you're gonna be turning down like 99.5% of projects and just finding these people that know what the fuck they're trying to do other than that you're going to want to kind of like, you know, you, you're going to, you're going to be like a self starter kind of at this point making this much money. You're going to go find some like quality ass work. Okay, so, and then, and then you're going to monetize it or productize it and stuff to get past like $100,000 a month. If you want to make that much, that's for another video. So making five times 2000. So this is like you want to have probably both of these. This is kind of like a good zone of genius to be at for this level here as well. Having five clients at $2,000 a month. You know, let's say the average production, they want, let's say like three videos a week. And so if you have five clients, that'd be like 15 videos per week. So obviously you're not going to be able to produce that. So at this rate, you know, you're like the average. Like, a good editor can probably produce like one, two if they're insane, for like three a week. Probably like one to two a week is normal. So if you have five clients at $2,000 a month, and obviously I'm not talking to like, a lot of, you know, maybe like someone us can like, kind of run this kind of division and stuff, and then just hiring people overseas. But yeah, you're going to start needing to go to the agency route. So if you're having to do 15 videos a week, let's say you can do two, you know, you're going to need a team of like five to seven video editors working under you. And these VAs, they're not like, like, obviously, like, you're gonna have to like, really systemize and like, really build a strong system around all this. We're not asking. We're not trying to make this easy. We're just trying to make this, you know, we're just. We're trying to get to, like, having 10 grand a month is what we're trying to get to. You know, each of these people, you could probably get away with, like, figuring out how to pay them, you know, anywhere from, let's say, like three to six hundred dollars a month. But the issue I see most people do is when they run this agency route is they just expect these people that are three to six hundred dollars a month to do everything. No, you want these people to kind of do like, a lot of the grunt work, you know, So a lot of, like the. The clips, like the clip stitching, like, a lot of like the. The heavy tax. Like, you want to figure out Pareto's principle. They say, like, you know, 20% of the things produce 80% of the results. So you want to figure out what are. You want to figure out what are these, you know, what are the things that take up, like, what are the things that do that are the highest leverage inside of the whole editing process. So you have like, the clip stitching, you have things like, you know, what else is there? You know, cleaning up the sound, finding the clips. Those are probably like the highest, you know, like the. The most like, taxing hourly work. And then you probably want to have like, one or two, like, master editors that are kind of like the QC process. Like, I would just. I would just install lots of quality control, like have cheap people and then have strong quality control. This is where all the money's at anyways, is like, you know, so this would be like the audio mastering, like making the audio sound really freaking solid, you know, making the music look good. Probably have like an animator or something like that. So then they can animate like, you know, let's say 30 things a month or 30 things a week. And it's not as taxing because they're just doing like, you know, little snippets of a video instead of creating the entire video. So you can have like, animations, you know, you can add sound effects. This I would just, like I said, I would just like, you know, have two different departments, have a department that's purely just like the grunt work side, and then you have another department that's this side right here. Like I said, this can be like cheap freelancers, like little VAs that you can hire from like, you know, Philippines or like, you know, India, different places like that. And then these. This, you know, you would have like someone that's a little bit more skilled, talented. Either that could be you, or you could always obviously hire somebody to do that. So when you start going the agency route, this is, you know, a lot of it. You want to. You want to try to keep your head over on strategy as much as possible. Like I was talking about with the North Star, trying to curate that North Star, you know, because like I said, the views are the thing that gets the money. And so you want to be constantly doing the research. You want to spend all your time on this research stage and then kind of just giving this over to your team, because that is essentially what curates the money. And then if you have 10 clients times one, you're obviously just going to be producing less videos, you know. You know, maybe you can scale this down to two. Two videos per week per client, and then that'll get it down to 10 and 7, having to do 15 and. And then just kind of charge them more. Like the way that you can charge more if you want to charge, let's say, is that $2,000 a client. But you have five clients and you want to charge three grand a client. You just got to make their. You got to make sure that you're providing them, you know, $30,000 a month in value in return for what you are providing them. So at 2000, you want to be providing them, let's say, like $20,000 a month. So if you want to provide, if you want to make $4,000 a month per client times five, that's $20,000 a month. You just need to figure out how to get them to where you know, they are doing $40,000 a month. AKA you know, let's say like 8 million views a month. Which, how do you do that is you help curate the vision. You find people that are good at creating the vision. But also you should be the master fricking editor. You should be the expert of editing or script writing in your department in this category of YouTube. So then you already know the music file, you have the systems and you're just giving it to the client. I will pay people tens of thousands. I just paid one person like $50,000 a year like for like for someone to purely give me the systems. This isn't for them to work for my company. This isn't any of that stuff. It's just for purely them to give me the systems that they have so then I can have the systems that are already proven to be working. So that's what I have. You know, let's, let's get you guys to be rich as fuck. This is like all these production people, this is what I'm looking for, you know, and I'm just looking for people that are in these stages that are going to like, I'm looking for these people that'll do, do this work, this work right here, finding the viral videos, finding the things that are already working. You do that stuff, I'm going to be one happy customer. I'm going to refer you off to as many people as I possibly can. I'm going to make sure that you are set in life and I'm going to pay you as much money as I possibly can. If you become an expert in these fields and you propose these ideas from your perspective of the editor. So I'm Devin Knapp and share this with your video production friends because I want you guys to be rich as fuck. Don't hoard the information. You know, there's enough clients to go around. There's so many out there. Just, you know, build friends, build. Send this to your friend group of production. Build a team of production people. That's what I got.
