You won't become a millionaire by overthinking

This is a YouTube video titled "You won't become a millionaire by overthinking" created on November 10, 2024, featuring Devon Canup sharing a motivational and instructional monologue. In this video, Devon Canup discusses the pitfalls of overthinking, emphasizing the importance of taking action, living in the present, and learning through experience to achieve success and wealth. The content is a solo talk where Devon reflects on personal experiences, mental models, and practical advice for viewers aiming to improve their lives and financial status.
I'm going to tell you something inside of this video that no one else is going to tell you. And I think they're afraid to tell you this, which is you're never going to become a millionaire if you overthink things. And I think it's easier to kind of just push this aside. And that's why society and on YouTube with all these different creators you see out there, nobody wants to tell you this because if they did, it's going to make things. It's not going to make it. So they want to. You want to watch more of their videos, it's going to make it. So you just watch one video and then you just go off and do something. I don't think anybody genuinely wants you to become successful, otherwise you would know this concept and you wouldn't even be watching this video in the first place. And that's the sense of the more that you overthink, the more, the more likely you're going to push opportunity away, the more likely the idea is going to turn into a bad idea and the less convicted you are going to be in yourself. And then rooted in that this is the right thing to do. Think about it. If you're somebody that like got married with somebody or dated some girl or at least you hear stories about this, the best relationships are typically the ones where there was really no thought that was involved into it. Like, yeah, there was like kind of mindfulness that was involved with all of this. But it was like they were a perfect match from the beginning. It was, there was, you know, no sort of overthinking, none of that. It was just like, oh, you're cute, I'm cute. You know, let's, let's spend time together, you know, and let's turn this into a serious relationship. The best things come from not thinking. And that's why if you want to do anything meaningful in this world and AKA get paid handsomely for it and become a millionaire, then you cannot overthink things. Because as soon as you start overthinking things, the less of a good idea something becomes. And so a lot of times people get into this very like, forceful state where it's like they're trying to force the universe to try to make them rich and trying to help make them become a millionaire. And what I will tell you is the more that you try to force things, the more they try to shove the square peg down the round hole, the more that the universe is going to repulse the sense of you becoming rich. And if anything, it's going to reward you with becoming broke, insane broke, and, and being poor because you're just self identifying and self labeling yourself that you're not rich. The more that you try to make something happen and the more that you overthink, you know, the action or the activity that are playing that stake. Now, think about it, like genuinely think if, think about if like Steve Jobs overthought the personal computer. What about if somebody like Warren Buffett overthought investing and didn't invest at all and he just like overthought investing. Think about if Genghis Khan overthought taking over the world and you know, was thinking about all about the possibilities of if he could die and just thought of all the different ways that he could die. None of these people that we listed here would have gone and done the things that they would have done because they would have been enamored by the what ifs and the could have beens. And it would have kept them away from doing things. They'd been like, oh, no, that's too dangerous, I can't do that, or oh, what if I fail? Or what if I lose? You know, I, I can't fail or can't, you know, I, I don't want to do that thing because there's a possibility of it not working out. And we would have thought these people were gigantic in reality, you know, if, like they didn't do anything, if they just were like, yeah, you know what, Yeah, I don't want to take over the world. And there's a countless amount of people that we have never heard of that are that exact story. But the people that we know and we memorize and we see in the world today, the Elon Musk, the Jeff Bezos, the Donald Trump's, the, you know, these people that are doing these incredible things and then there's, you know, for every one of those people, there's thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of could have beens or what ifs. And the thing that separates those two people are the people that take action on the thing that they have and the people that overthink things. And so here's one thought I want to kind of give you guys. You probably heard this statistic before, which is something along the lines of like 80% of, like, do we have like tens of thousands of thoughts every single day and 80% of our thoughts are negatively biased thoughts. And it's because of our, our brains and because of our biology. If you think about it, you know, we were just cavemen just literally 70,000 years ago, it wasn't even like it was that long in comparison of how long Neanderthals and human beings have been around. Like we were in caves, like for majority of our lives until recently until society started becoming a thing. And so a lot of it was like survival mechanisms that we created to try to keep ourselves safe. And so because we were trying to keep ourselves safe this entire time, we had to like really think things through so that way we could stay alive. But no longer do we live in a day and age where, you know, you can go down on a walk down the street and you're going to get mauled by a tiger or, or that you're being hunted at all times. You know, it's like we are no longer in this state of survival and most of us have a roof over our heads and have a safe protective environment. We could just go to the grocery store to go buy our groceries. And so a lot of like how we are wired and how we are created no longer serves us as, as like this current state of, you know, life and society and how things work. And so majority of the thoughts that we have are purely by all biological of like trying to keep ourselves safe. And it's this kind of like survival instinct that we've created. And the more that you live in the survival instinct and the more that you try to, you know, keep yourself safe and to protect yourself and to, you know, think through things to, you know, stay safe, the more that you are actually setting yourself up for failure. In a society of abundance, when in a culture of abundance, when there is infinite amounts of things in the current lives that we live, you literally have access to everything at your fingertips. I have access to millions of people on my fingertips. I just made a post the other day, I got like 2 million views. I have access to the same resources and same tools that you have. There's nothing different. No private, you know, app there like version that I have of these softwares, I just use this. I have the same access to YouTube that you have access to. I have the same access to Twitter as you have access to like I have the same banks that you guys have access. Like there's really nothing different that separates me or any of these people that you see mega successful versus you. And so what the difference is, is a bias towards action, is a bias towards decision making, is a bias towards doing. If I were to overthink doing this video, I wouldn't have recorded it. Now there is a difference and there is a huge Clear separation between overthinking something and being in the moment. And being mindful of the moment that we're in. Because the past no longer exists. The past is in the past. It is no longer a part of the present. It is gone, it is removed. That time is no longer here. And then the same with the future. It has not came yet. And so there is nothing in the future. And so what that leaves us with is the now with the present. And so what is this moment that this now require for it to be the best use of this moment, which is to be present. Anytime that you are not living in the present, you are living in a different reality that is not the current one that you are in. And you are not going to know what needs to be done if you're living in alternate realities and not the one that we are currently in. Now, obviously there's a time and a place for some of the stuff to like think of future and anything that's not an exciting future, it just doesn't even exist on the plane of existence of myself. Because I realize that there's always something new, there's always something exciting around the corner. And I can't be thinking about that all day though, because the more that I think about it, the more that I push it away and the more I'm living out of the now, that's going to allow me to get to that future reality. And the more that I live in the past, the more I'm trying to bring that past to my current life. When there is no circumstance like it, it is like the whole, you know, if a man goes into a river and walks out, and then the next time the man goes into the river, it's not the same man nor the same river that the man is going into. And so if we live in the past, we are living in circumstance that we are no longer possibly having right now. And I know I'm kind of like speaking up here a little bit. I'm gonna try to make this a little bit more tangible for some of the more simple minded people watching my content, which it really is actually, it's more the overthinkers of my content. It's really that simple. That's it. It's just you guys aren't living in the present, you guys aren't living in the now. And that's the issue. And we're thinking about all the what can be's or the what ifs and whatnot, or the possible amounts of failure. And we're trying to dodge walls and stuff like that. And you're not going to know what the walls actually look like because you haven't been in that zone of genius. You haven't experienced that before. It's not until you practice 10,000 kicks that you know the slight nuance in the kick that you were making and the person that you're kicking and the size of the person that you're kicking and in that moment. And you're going to have some relative data to help you lead, you know, lead you through those situations. But a lot of it's faith, A lot of it's just trusting the process, and a lot of it's just trusting the person that you are in order to be able to do that. And in fact, it's actually a thing called intuition. Intuition is the thing that leads us through making the best decisions. Because it's like as if we have a huge store, a huge library of past decisions that we're making. And our brain is a basically insane supercomputer that's able to process all these past things that have happened and allow us to have the best possible outcome with the circumstance that we have. And the way that we take that away and make a making not being able to make the best decisions is if we don't have a lot of data to make these decisions based off of. If we have very limited amount of data, let's say we only have like one little book. When there's thousands of books out there and we only have one little book to make decisions, it's like if we have just a hammer, every tool or every problem is going to look like a nail. And we just don't have enough data, we don't have enough context, we don't have enough information to know what to do with other problems that we run into, our lives or other circumstance. And so what we must do is store more data. And the way that we store more data isn't by overthinking because we have limited bandwidth. We have to get new books that are out there, that are out there in the world, and we have to add them to our library and consume them. That's an action, that's an active thing. We have to go get more information. And the way that we get the fastest and the most incredible amount of information is by living in the reality that we are in. It's by doing things and then seeing the byproduct and the results of said action. And then now that we have the feedback, we have the feedback loop that's closed. We know how Quality that decision was, or that action was, or if that thing was worthwhile. And what we typically have to do is we have to do iterations. No single thing in this world is done by a single iteration. And then that is what you're seeing. Like, I have this, like, ring here that's on my finger that tracks my sleep. I think this is the third generation of it. And now with that being said, they probably came up with hundreds of generations before they even sold their first generation. They probably had all sorts of, like, test ones and stuff like that. But this is the third one that they're selling. Third generation, what they're selling. And then the amount of generations that go into the software, the amount of app updates that they probably have with it, the amount of different materials that they've tested to coat the rings and then the interior, they. They've probably tested hundreds, if not thousands of variables with each of these different components. And then this is the third generation of them selling this ring out to the public. Same with this Rolex watch. Like, these things have been around for, like, over 100 years. And they've tested so many different things. They've used so many different materials. Like, a lot of these watches that are the most, you know, valued today are the ones that have been around the longest and have tested out the most amount of different things, and they have had the most amount of variation with the things that they are putting out there to make the best quality product. And it's the best quality product that wins over time. Typically, this video that you guys are watching that I am recording right now, I have recorded thousands of videos. I have also made thousands of videos on my channels. I was at a, like, I've been at times where I post like 10 videos a day. I think right now we probably post like four to six videos a day across everything. And right now, at the moment, and it's just like, I get the feedback loop of all of this data, and I look at it every single day. And I look at the feedback loops that we are receiving from putting out this information about this content. And based off the feedback loops that I'm getting, I know what works and what doesn't. And then I also look at other people's feedback loops that other people posting, and I get to study that and see what people are watching right now. These are feedback loops that are created from a bias of action, not from thinking things through. Like, literally having no access to the data or no access to the Internet. Just me sitting here in my chair thinking, huh, what's the best possible way to go? What's the best move right now? If I don't have enough information, if I don't have enough data, kind of like sitting back a little bit more. If I don't have enough data, if I don't have enough information, then I'm never going to make a best decision. I'm never going to make a good decision by just sitting here thinking in this chair all day, never doing anything for days, for weeks, for months, for years, that I'm going to make the best decision as possible. We make decision through data, through information. You're going to make better decisions after watching this video because I gave you data. Now, that doesn't mean you need to go watch 50 more videos. It just means now I give you a little bit of some inspiration, a little bit of some motivation, a little bit of some tactical thinking around your mind and some better mental models so you can make better decisions. So let me go over my handy dandy notes over here that I got, that I wrote up before this to make sure I cover everything. And so I will tell you from my own personal experience, by the way, some of the best videos that are like, some of the best content and videos that I've made online as I've made literal thousands of videos at this point, talking with my face on it, and videos without me being on camera. So the best videos I ever make typically come through not from really some oversight, like overthinking of the process, but more so from intuition. Some of the best content that I've ever made. I just like, I. I had some posts that got like hundreds of thousands of views on my Twitter that I literally was just like, oh, let me throw this up real quick. Two minutes. And then I throw it up and then it gets millions of views. Let me see. Or hundreds of thousands of views, millions of views, like, and it's something I didn't really think too much up. I just was like, huh? Yeah, like, here you go. This post right here, this was one that I posted a few months ago. It said, focus on making 30k a month, traveling, talking to girls, spending more than 30 minutes in the gym. Get to 30k a month ASAP, then get girls, travel and get jacked. I've spent hours on posts, like literal hours and days. Like, I think some of my posts I put like 20, 30 hours into, like kind of thinking through, like really writing it up. And then this post I literally threw together real quick in like five minutes. I don't even think it was at maybe, like, two minutes, I threw it together real quick as I was about to, like, go to church or whatever or something like that. And after I threw it up, I checked my phone out later. It's, like, blowing up. I'm like, what the hell? Then I check it out, and it's just getting, like, hundreds of thousands of views. And I put zero thought into that content. I've had lots of content now. Like, at this point, like, even if you look at this channel, there's one. It was like I talked about how I can never work a job anymore. I put some thought into it. Like, I was, you know, mindful of, like, how I wanted to articulate it, but I think I threw it together in 30 minutes. And then I hit record. Like, the notes on that one. And then there was another one I did in my car. It was talking about, like, limiting beliefs and how I overcame them. That one, I think I sat there. I was driving on the way to. I was on a road trip in California, and I was just like, ooh, I want to record a video. What am I going to record a video about? Oh, okay. I want to talk about, like, limiting beliefs. Okay, cool. And then I was just, like, literally, like, handed my phone to my. My girlfriend in the car, and I was like, here, record this. And then she's like, okay. And I literally just, like, just started spitting off the top of my head. That was literally it. I was just in the moment. I was just like, this is what I'm feeling right now, and let me hit record on it. Same with this video. I threw together some notes that I have right here. And, you know, I don't know the exact performance of this video, but that's majority of my content, at least at this point. Anytime that I've like, overthought things, typically, the opportunity passed. It took too long to get it out, or, you know, it just. It really just didn't perform. And it just didn't really nail, like, the essence of the emotion of, like, why I'm recording that thing versus, like, this that I'm recording. You could feel it. You can tell. It's just, like, genuine. This is just, you know, this is just me sharing myself. I don't have to be anything to record this video. I literally just was like, oh, I want to record a video. Let me come up with a few ideas. Cool. Okay. Let me just think this one through. Like, you know, let me lay out just a quick script. I loaded through together in, like, 10 minutes, and then let me hit record and Now I'm able to portray the best of like who Devin Canup is and the essence of that. So the other thing is just, yeah, you don't, you don't know what you don't know. And most of knowing is discovered after the fact of doing things. Now, after watching this video, if you go and let me think of a quick exercise for you, for you guys here. If you go and hit record on a video right now after this video, and even if it's quick, just like, hey, my name is Jason, because you like, not comfortable with it, you know, you're not used to it, hey, my name is Jason. You know, this is who I am. And tell your quick, your quick story. The video is probably not going to be the best video you've made. It's probably going to suck. But now that you've recorded that video, now you kind of have a better understanding of what it feels like to be on camera. You have a better understanding of like, you think that this video you're going to record is like a half an hour long video. And then you get done with it and you're like, dude, that was only like a minute or 30 seconds. And then now you kind of have that understanding or that knowledge that like, okay, that is not as long as I thought it was going to be. Even though it felt like it took forever to record the video, then now the next time you record, you can push yourself just a little bit more. And it's through those iterations of trying those things that then you discover after the fact that of what is it like to actually make that thing? That's why a lot of times if you don't know, I help people build faceless YouTube channels and we're really good at it. A lot of times I just tell people to just go and start creating content. Even if it sucks, even if it's terrible. Just literally just go post some videos on some dummy channel or something like that and just get some videos out. The videos are going to be ass. They're going to suck. They're not going to be good. But what's going to happen through that process is you're going to start to get an understanding of the production process. You're like, okay, cool, this is what editing means. You know, you probably know what it means. But it's like once you finally do it for yourself, you're like, oh, this is the work that's involved into it. This is the process. You know, after you do 10 videos, after you do 20 videos, you start to kind of define a process and you start to have a better understanding through. That's something that you can't just think about. I can't just tell you what the process is and you just think and then you're just a mad genius on how to produce content. The best creators in the world are the people that create all the time. And then now over time, after they've created so much, they just have this like unconscious genius that they start to develop and, and through that unconscious genius, that's when they create really good shit. For me, I have an unconscious, I have an unconscious genius of making content, of speaking, of talking, of knowing ideas and knowing what people want to see. Because I've just done it so many times. I've had the feedback, I've had the closed feedback loop of the data, of the results of the outcome of what I've produced. I recorded so many videos that are 10 minutes long, I've recorded so many videos that are 20 minutes long, 30 minutes long, an hour long and two hours long, four hours long. After being in those days and in those circumstances of just, and recording of these videos, I'll sit down and record videos for eight hours. Sometimes, like I am comfortable in that volume of time and yeah, maybe my voice goes away by, by the end of all of it, but I'm comfortable there. And I've done it like I've done it so many times now. The next time when I write up some content and I know what I want to go shoot when I go to record, I can just hit record and I can just go through it and I don't have to like, I can, I can visualize the output of the thing that I am creating by the reps that I've done in the past and knowing of how the end product's going to come out before I even hit record because I've done it so many times. And so when I'm scripting things or when I'm creating things, I can kind of perceive like on the other side how the viewer is taking this information and what they are thinking at that point in time. And so let's skip over a couple of these other points. I just feel like they're not so pertinent here. It's just. There you go. Let me say this is like, you know, for some of you, like, okay, Devin, if I just purely just take action on whatever I have right now, it's probably not going to be good. Yeah, you're right, it probably is not going to be good. But through that, through that taking of action of that thing, that's probably not going to be good. You're going to go and discover what actually good looks like, or you're going to get a glimpse, you're going to get a little shimmer of what good is supposed to look like, and you're gonna feel it. And now that you've kind of started to feel what good looks like now, you're. The next iteration that you're gonna be able to do is gonna be significantly better. And so, you know, thinking has to be somewhat good. You know, it keeps us safe. But also it's like, you know, you can't just go take action and do things. I mean, yes, you can. You totally can't go. But it's. It's less about thinking and like, thinking. Like, you know the word think. Let's look this up. Actually, what does the word think mean? I always do this. I never pretend to know everything, because anybody that pretends to know everything is a fool. They're an idiot. Anytime. Like, I literally was in. I was today. I was hearing the word amnesia. I was like, I don't know what the word amnesia means. You know, and this is some. I'm someone that makes 2, 300 grand a month. I don't know what the word amnesia means. And me not knowing amnesia, like, I don't have to be some perfectionist. Like, I don't pretend to know everything. Some of the most basic words, like, you guys watching this probably have an ego and don't think like, oh. You know, it's like, oh, Devin's a dumbass, doesn't know what amnesia is. Yeah, motherfucker. You probably don't know what other words mean either. So don't try to be. Think that you're cool, thinking that you know everything. So thinking the process of using one's mind to consider or reason about something. To consider or reason, it doesn't even mean to. It's using rational judgment. And so one of the common misconceptions of thinking is intelligence. And we think that the richest people in the world are some of the most intelligent people that are out there. But in reality, if you met some of these people that are rich, like, you would realize they are not the most intelligent people. Most of the rich people that you will meet are some of the least intelligent people. I would even label myself as a very unintelligent person. Like, there's a lot of things I don't know. Let's see. Like, I didn't even know what the word thinking means. I Mean, I've used it in language. I, I use the word think. I have a general understanding, but I don't know what the word thinking means. You don't know what action is. You don't know what it is that people want these days. You don't know what it is. That is money. It if you have no money. And so if you pretend to know what these things are, you're robbing yourself of existence, you're robbing yourself of knowing, you're robbing yourself of this intelligence or this knowledge that's out there. And you're actually a dumbass thinking that you know everything because you're letting your ego get in the way. And so if you think you're so smart, but you don't have the money, if you don't have the lifestyle that you want, if you're not living the life that you want, then that is you being stupid. So you're actually not smart if you're not living the life that you want. Because if you're smart, you would be living that life. Or you come up with some bullshit victim mindset excuse that like why you're not living that life. And so none of us, after reading this definition, actually, none of us are actually like thinking in the way that we're thinking. We were thinking with limited context. Whatever we think of, like, oh, you know, whenever we overthink things, like right now you're listening to this video. If your mind's running, if your mind's racing, I want you to stop, I want you to take a deep breath in and then let it go. All those thoughts that you had had zero context. They didn't really have that much context. Or it's limited and rooted in the context that you have in the past. Past which your past is no declaration on your future. And if you keep living in the past, you're going to keep living the same day repeat over and over and over again. And so in order to live something new, you need to have new thoughts and you need to think new things and you need to act differently. And if you keep acting in the present in a way that you did in the past, you will never receive new things. And so what you need to do is you need to instead decide who it is that you want to be. It's a decision of that who it is that you want to be. And it's okay if it's the wrong decision for right now for this grand all purpose, what's cool is that we can always change, but you need to decide on Something I decided I wanted to become a millionaire. I decide now that I want to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I decide that I want to help people change their lives and to help people become rich. And I decided that I want to do whatever the fuck I want in life. That's what I decided years ago. And so what I had to start doing is I started having to act like that person and start just doing the things that that person is. I don't have to think about what that person does. Instead, I go study those people and. And I just do the things that they are. I don't think of it. I don't. I don't. I don't try to understand. I don't try to reason with it. I don't try to build my own formula with it if I haven't done it before. I just do what they tell me to do. I just follow the instruction. You should just follow the instruction that I give you, which is to shut the fuck up and to listen and to just. If you have an idea, take action on it. If you have a video you want to go make, go make the video. If you have a business you want to go do, go build the business. Don't go talk to other people and ask, should I start this business? Should I go, like, become a YouTuber? Should I go through drop shipping? Should I go through email marketing? Just go do it. Nobody's gonna have contact. Nobody around. You probably has ever done that shit before. So why are they. Why are you gonna ask other people for advice? Why are you gonna tell other people what you're doing if none of them have ever done it before? For what I will tell you is the stuff that I am doing now, I met a couple people that were doing it, and I just asked them, what's the formula? And I did the formula. That was it. There was not a whole lot of thinking that was involved in it. It was just doing it was just finding the people and then doing what they gave me. Nowhere in there was thinking through the process. It was just taking action. It was having a bias of action. And the reason why we don't do that is because we're afraid. We're scared. We're scared of failure, scared of not being good enough. You watching this video are afraid of not being good enough. And you watching this video are scared of the outcomes that can happen from you not being prepared and not being good enough. And to not have all the answers and to do things wrong. That's natural. That's how we're raised. That's how we are biologically. It's just. It only makes sense for that, for us to be that way. But what I will tell you is you will have no new experience by living in that way. Nothing new will come from you being stuck into these old ways or these old beliefs or these old mindsets. And in fact, you have to adapt something new. And the new doesn't come from thinking about it. The new comes from actually going in and getting the data points and doing something about it. So what I am telling you inside of this video is stop overthinking things. There is no solution in thought. There is no solution in thinking through things. The solution comes from taking action. The solution comes from finding something that works and running it with and not trying to understand, why should you do this? Instead of this, just literally go do the thing and then the rest will come along with it. That's how I got rich. That's how I live my dream life. That's how everybody else that you meet that's wealthy and rich living your dream life is doing it. We didn't think things through that much. We just do. We take action and then we become better thinkers, even though we're still not that good with thinkers through doing. Okay, that's it. There's no secret formula. There's nothing that you're really missing. Just whatever is out there, just go do it. Just go take action and then you'll become a millionaire. The issue is you don't do enough. You don't take action. I'm devicing up. See you guys in the next one.
