Some drugs are already decriminalized and legalized and they're called alcohol and tobacco. When we talk about decriminalization of illegal drugs, essentially we're talking about is not giving users a criminal record. That's the crunch. And that is now been endorsed by almost every single one of the many different UN divisions. The only one that hasn't supported decriminalization of drug possession is the Office of Drugs and Crime. But all the others, health, children, education, they all think criminalization of drug users is really the worst policy because a criminal record changes your whole life forever. In some countries it can end your life because you can be executed. So the decriminalization is about making sure that people who use drugs get into treatment if they're dependent or get deterrents if they're not dependent, rather than getting the criminal records.
