Mihail Pautov discusses how gut bacteria affect weight loss beyond just calories. He lost 13 kg eating a diverse 30-plant salad regularly, which he credits to the microbiome influencing his appetite and metabolism.
What is exactly this microbiome and how can it affect our weight, our mood, our energy, our appetite?
So the microbiome is best thought of as a newly discovered organ in our body. It just so happens to live in the lower part of our intestine. It's made up of hundreds of trillions of microbes, little organisms you need a microscope to see. They produce chemicals. That's what they do. Each of them produce a range of chemicals and they often work together as teams to do that. And they convert food into chemicals.
Yeah, I was trying to lose weight and I somehow managed to create a salad that is a 30 plant salad, so you can eat dirty plants in one meal. And I started to eat that salad and I lost about 13 kg and a few months. I don't know if it is going to work with other people, but I'm pretty sure that the microbiome that eat it, all of those fibers, he got enough food and he was not like giggling my appetite and that was one of the main causes that I lost weight.
