In the universe, I'd say yeah. I mean, I can't— there are 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe, and the universe goes beyond that edge that we can observe. So I would be astonished if there aren't other civilizations somewhere. The real question is, how close are they?

that's what matters to us really. How are they contactable? And my guess would be not. So my guess would be that there are very few or maybe no other civilizations currently in the Milky Way galaxy. I would guess there are other civilizations out there. And also, it's not all down to us.

Because I'm worried that if we mess this up,
then
there's nobody else in the vicinity, by which I might mean the galaxy, to bring meaning to an otherwise meaningless universe, I would say. So therefore, if someone lands outside, I'd be like—
Like, I started this podcast saying that you have this feeling that you're like, you're so small and insignificant. Like, if we vanish, universe probably won't care. But then if we are alone here, we have like a mission maybe. Yeah. And we don't have—
That astronomy gives us is perspective. It tells us that we are one planet around one star amongst 400 billion stars in one galaxy amongst 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. That is what we are. But it may also tell us that we are remarkably valuable because this planet might be one of the few places where collections of atoms can have a conversation like this.
