A brief "Restaurant Coach™ Minute" by Donald Burns advising restaurant leaders to stop tolerating poor performance and negative attitudes. Burns defines "silent approval" (a leader who notices problems but says nothing), stresses the duty to address underperforming staff, and argues leaders can control how long they tolerate bad attitudes even if they cannot control the attitudes themselves.

Hey, Donald Burns with a restaurant Coach Minute. Now, if you're tolerating poor performance, bad or negative attitudes in your restaurant, you're just as guilty as those that have the issue. See, by not getting rid of the poor performers and the negative energy vampires, you're basically an accomplice. The rest of the team stands by as a witness to this example of poor leadership. Silent approval is when the leader sees poor performance or bad attitudes and doesn't say anything. If you really are a true leader, then it's your duty to address the team members that are not performing up to the standards set by you and your restaurant. And I can tell you that people really want to follow a true leader. And if you have the courage to step up and be the leader they need, they will follow you. You can't control someone's bad attitude who works for you. However, what you can control is how long you allow a person with a bad attitude to work for you. See, what you put up with, you really do end up with in the end.
