From Babysitter to Leader: Transforming Your Restaurant Management Approach

This short coaching video (Donald Burns, "restaurant coach") explains how restaurant owners and managers can stop feeling like a "glorified babysitter" and instead build a motivated, high-performing team. Burns outlines a four-part blueprint: (1) create a positive environment (clean workplace, respect, recognition, growth opportunities), (2) set clear expectations (job descriptions, training materials, performance metrics, one-on-ones), (3) empower staff (delegate, allow autonomy, implement feedback loops), and (4) cultivate team spirit (team-building, celebrations, collaborative culture). The video closes with a CTA to like/subscribe and a preview promising manager-to-leader training in the next video.

Sick and tired of feeling like a glorified babysitter in your restaurant. Well, take notes as I'm about to give you the plan to make sure you stop this once and for all. Hey, everyone. Donald Burns, the restaurant coach. And today we're going to talk about a topic that many restaurant owners and managers face. How to stop feeling like a glorified babysitter and instead learn how to motivate your team. So if you want to create a thriving, I mean thriving, high performing team, stick around and let's dive in. So let me know if you've experienced this before. You walk into your restaurant and it feels like you're stepping into a daycare. The team's just chatting, not paying attention to the guest, and maybe even complaining about their jobs. You feel like you have to babysit them to get them to do anything and it just becomes exhausting. How about we change that? If you want to have a successful restaurant, I mean a very successful restaurant, you need a motivated, passionate and dedicated team. So let's break down the steps to transform your workplace. First, you need to create a positive environment. This means having a clean, organized workplace and treating your team with respect. Yes, respect goes both ways. People need to feel valued and appreciated. Be motivated. Here are some actionable steps to make that happen. Number one, regularly recognize and reward hard work and achievements. Two, encourage open communication and listen to their concerns. I mean really listen. Number three, invest in their growth and provide opportunities for development. Everyone has a human need to grow, learn and become more. And if they don't get it from your restaurant, that's why they'll go down the street to the other restaurant. Hashtag, write this shit down. A positive environment leads to a happier, more motivated team. Next, you must set clear expectations. Your team must know exactly what is expected of them from their job responsibilities to the restaurant's performance goals. To do this, number one, provide clear, accurate, updated job descriptions and training materials, including training videos. Number two, establish performance metrics and regularly review them with the team and update them on a regular basis. Three, discuss expectations in team meetings and in one on one sessions. And yes, you should be having one on one sessions with your team regularly. How do you know if you're not meeting with your team one on one regularly Enough. Here's a little test. Walk up to anyone on your team and say, hey, you got a minute? I want to talk to you now. Look at their expression on their face. If they look totally shocked and scared, that means you're not talking to your team enough. By setting clear Expectations, your team will know exactly what to aim for and they're also going to feel a sense of accomplishment when they meet or exceed those goals. Here's a good little reminder that it's probably time to let go of the reins a little bit and empower your team a little bit more. You gotta trust your team with responsibilities and give the autonomy to them to make decisions. This actually is gonna boost their confidence and motivate them to excel inside your restaurant. Here's a few ways to make that happen. Number one, delegate task and decision making. Two, encourage problem solving and creativity. And three, implement a feedback loop for continuous improvement. That means one on ones, when your team feels empowered, they're going to be more invested into your restaurant success and also more likely to be self motivated. And finally, it's time to cultivate a little team spirit. Employees who feel that they're part of a team are going to feel more motivated to contribute to the restaurant's overall success. So how do you build team spirit? I'm glad you asked. Number one, you could organize some team building activities and events. Two, create a set sense of, you know, just kind of togetherness by having group celebrations and recognitions of like people's birthdays, work anniversaries, things like that. And three, you gotta foster and create a culture of collaboration and support. A strong team spirit is gonna help your team feel connected. And then when they're connected, they're gonna be motivated better to work together towards your common goals. So there you have it. A blueprint for for transforming your restaurant workplace from a glorified daycare into a thriving, motivated environment. By creating a positive environment, setting clear expectations, empowering your team, cultivating that team spirit, you're going to see a significant shift in your restaurant's performance, your profits, and your employees motivation.
