Short conversational transcript from a YouTube video in which Donald Burns and another speaker discuss burnout in the restaurant/ownership/consulting industry and personal methods for recharging. The speakers label burnout as widespread (‘a sickness’/‘a disease’) and describe brief, meaningful pleasures they use to recover—explicitly naming fly fishing and shooting as methods to ‘blow off steam.’
Burnout is probably an epidemic in this industry. How do you personally, like, recharge when that pressure cooker of ownership and consulting kind of hits full boil?
It's a sickness.
It's a disease.
Yeah. I think most of us have it. I find myself thinking about how I recharge less than I think about how I keep everybody else recharged and from burning out. You got to find meaningful pleasure in small doses, you know? And so I do. There's. There's just little things. I, I, I love fly fishing, so any chance I get, I can cut away and just go do some fly fishing. I love shooting guns, you know? Like, there's, there's actually a cool place down by where you live called C2 tackle.
That's where I go to. Yeah.
Yeah. It's a cool little spot. So, like, when you literally say, like, blowing off steam, like, that's literally. I go blow off steam.
It's just, yeah, go shoot. Yeah, go shoot a couple hundred rounds, you feel a lot better about yourself.
