The Real Reason Your Staff Isn’t Happy

Donald Burns (Restaurant Coach) argues that when restaurant staff are unhappy the root cause is the leader — often the owner — and presents eight specific leadership-related reasons (low standards, inconsistency, disengagement, poor communication, lack of recognition, poor work environment, lack of development, not leading by example). He frames the solution as owners taking honest responsibility and improving leadership behaviors; ends with a call-to-action for his eight-week Restaurant Owner Academy at warriorrestaurants.com.

Hey, ever wonder why your staff isn't happy no matter what you do? Listen up, because this is going to hit you like a ton of bricks. You're the problem. Yeah, I said it. You're the reason your staff isn't happy. Stick around and I'm explaining why and give you eight ways to fix it. Hey. Welcome to the Restaurant Coach Podcast. It is the cure for the common restaurant. I'm Donald Burns, the restaurant coach, author of the youe Restaurant Sucks trilogy, Savage Restaurant Success, and the creator of the TRC Method. Now, before you lose your cool, let me explain. This question comes up so often that I'm going to tell you my typical answer. Your team's not happy because you're not a happy person. I mean, really, that's. That's really what it all is about. This question comes up so often that I thought I'd just share my typical answer. You're not a happy person. I mean, no, really, that's it. You might have other things going on in your restaurant that. That could be holding you back from being the owner that you want to be the owner that your staff wants you to be. That's why you're not happy. It's always the leader. Always, always the leader. So let's talk about what's really going on here. You're unhappy. Now, you're unhappy because you have some standards that you're not living up to. You're not comfortable with who you are as a person and a leader of your restaurant. You're not living up to your full potential. Now, before you go on the defense and start judging yourself, I'm not trying to be critical of you. I'm trying to be honest with you. To build the restaurant you want, you need to be honest with yourself. You need to face the truth. You need to get real with yourself. That's the first step to getting the restaurant that you want. Be honest with yourself. Now, let's talk about the real reasons your staff isn't happy. Number one, you don't have high standards. Your staff looks to you as their leader, their guide. If you're not setting the bar high, they won't either. Your standards set the tone for the entire operation. If you allow mediocrity, you're going to get mediocrity. High standards drive high performance. Write that shit down. When you aim for excellence, your team will follow suit. Number two, you're inconsistent. I mean, one day you're demanding, the next day you're all laid back. This inconsistency breeds confusion and frustration among Your team, they don't know what to expect from you and this instability can really make them unhappy. Consistency and leadership provides a stable environment where your staff knows what is expected of them and can thrive. Number three, you're not engaged. Your staff can sense when you've kind of checked out. If you're not passionate and engaged in your own restaurant, I mean, why should they be? Your energy and enthusiasm are contagious. If you show genuine interest in their work and the success of the restaurant, they're going to feel valued and motivated to perform their best. Number four, Lack of communication. Communication is the cornerstone of a successful restaurant. If you're not communicating effectively with your team, they are left in the dark. Clear, honest and open communication fosters a sense of trust and and teamwork. You have to make sure your team knows what's going on and what is exactly expected of them. Number five. No recognition or rewards. Your staff wants to feel appreciated. If you're not recognizing their hard work and achievements, they're going to feel undervalued and unmotivated. I'm telling you, a simple thank you can go a long way. Implement a system of recognition and rewards to keep morale high and also show your team that you appreciate their efforts. Number six. Poor work environment. Your restaurant's environment plays a significant role in your staff's happiness. A toxic work culture, lack of resources and uncomfortable physical space. They can all contribute to dissatisfaction. You have to invest in creating a positive, supportive and well equipped work environment where your team can actually thrive. Number seven. You're not developing them. Your staff wants to grow. If you're not providing opportunities for professional development and advancement, they're going to feel stagnant. Invest in training and development programs that help your team enhance their soft skills and also advance their careers. When they grow, your restaurant grows. Number eight. You're not leading by example. I will tell you this. Your actions speak louder than your words. And if you're not practicing what you preach, your staff will not respect you. Lead by example in every aspect of your restaurant. Show them what excellence looks like through your actions and they will follow your lead. It's time to get real with yourself and make the changes necessary to become the leader that your team needs and that they also deserve. The happiness and success of your restaurant always starts with you. Hey, make sure to hit that like and subscribe button before you leave.
