Donald Burns argues that the habits keeping your restaurant running won't take it further. Fear and comfort cause stagnation. You need to reinvent through new skills, harder choices, and letting go of what worked before.

Who you are today has gotten you as far as you're going to get. Think about that for a second. The version of you, the one who you've built up over the years, with all the habits, routines, and mindset that you've clung to, that person has taken you this far. Let me hit you with a hard truth. That version of you isn't going to take you any further. You've kind of hit your limit. And if you want to break through and go to the next level, it's time to reinvent yourself. Stick around and I'll show you exactly how to do that. Welcome to the Restaurant Coach podcast. It is the cure for the common restaurant. I'm Donald Burns, the restaurant coach, author of the your restaurant sucks trilogy, Savage Restaurant Success, creator of the TRC Method, and founder of Warrior Restaurants. Let's get one thing clear. The game changes when you're pushing for greatness. What got you here won't get you there. You cannot rely on the same habits, the same routines, the same mindset that brought you to this point, because that version of you has reached its expiration date. I mean, it's done. And if you keep clinging to it, you're gonna stay stuck exactly where you are right now. So here's the real talk. Most people stay stuck because they're just too damn scared to do what it takes to level up. They're too attached to the person that they've always been. They're comfortable, even if they're not getting the results they want. Why? Because change. Change is hard. Reinventing yourself, that's terrifying. But guess what? If you want to push past that limit, if you want to take your business and you want to take your life to the next level, you don't have a choice. You have to evolve. Reinvention is the path to growth. I will tell you right now, reinvention isn't just a one time deal. It's not something you do once and you're set for life. Reinvention is a continuous process. It's about constantly, constantly evaluating where you are, where do you want to go, and what do you need to become in order to get there. I mean, you can't be afraid to let go of the old you, I mean, the one that's been holding you back, and step into a new version of yourself that's ready for greatness. I've worked with countless restaurant owners who hit a plateau. They reach a certain level of success, but then they get stuck. They were comfortable with the systems they had, the team they built, and the way they had always done things. But when things started to slow down, they couldn't grow anymore. And when I told them they need to change, they resisted. They didn't want. They didn't want to let go of the person they were, the person who had built their business from the ground up. But the truth is, if you're not willing to evolve, you're never, ever, ever going to break through to the next level. So here's the reason most people stay stuck. They're afraid. Afraid of change. Afraid of stepping into the unknown. Afraid of what it might take to become something different. Because, let's be real. Reinventing yourself is not easy. It means getting uncomfortable. It means questioning everything you thought you knew. It means breaking down the habits and routines that have defined you for years and also rebuilding them from the ground up. But here's the thing. If you're not uncomfortable, you're not growing. Comfort is the enemy of progress. The person you are today is the sum of all your experiences. Your habits, your mindset, and your routines. But that person has reached their limit. And if you really want to level up, if you want to achieve greatness, you need to let go of who you are and become the person you need to be. And here's the sad thing. Most people aren't willing to do that. They'd rather stay stuck in their comfort zone, where things feel safe and familiar. But that comfort zone, it's a prison. It keeps you from growing, from evolving, from reaching your full potential. Here's the hard truth. Reinvention requires sacrifice. It means giving up the old ways of thinking. Those old habits, those old routines that you've always been hanging on to that are holding you back. It means willing to let go of the person you are in order to become the person that you're meant to be. And here's the thing. That's not easy. It's painful. It's messy. But it's also necessary if you actually want to break through to that next level. And think about it like this. Every level of success requires a new version of you. The person you were when you started your restaurant isn't the same person that you need to be in order to grow into an empire. The skills, the mindsets, the habits, all the things that got you to this point, they're not enough to get you to that next level. You want to keep growing. If you want to evolve, you need to keep becoming more. You need to be someone new. Now, that might mean letting go of old habits that no longer serve you. It might mean Adopting new routines, learning new skills. Or maybe just changing the way you think about your restaurant. It might even mean letting go of people who aren't aligned with your vision and your goals. But whatever it takes, you need to be willing to do it. I'm telling you, fear is the biggest obstacle standing your way. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of change. It's all holding you back. But here's the thing about fear. It's only powerful if you let it be powerful. Fear thrives in the dark. It grows when you ignore it, when you avoid it. But when you face it head on, when you shine a light on it, fear loses its power. You can't let fear keep you stuck. You can't let it stop you from becoming the person that you need to be. The only way to overcome fear is to take action in spite of it. To push through it, even when it feels uncomfortable. Because on the other side of that fear is growth. On the other side of that fear is the version of yourself that's capable of greatness. I mean, seriously, you gotta be willing to get uncomfortable. You gotta be willing to take risks. You gotta be willing to fail. Because failure isn't the end. It's part of the process. Every time you fail, you're learning something new. Every time you step outside of your comfort zone, you grow. And every time you face your fear, you get one step closer to becoming the person that you need to be. So how do you actually reinvent yourself? It all starts with self awareness. You need to take a hard look at yourself and ask, what's actually holding me back? What habits, routines, what mindsets are keeping me stuck? What do I need to let go of in order to move forward? Now, once you've identified what's holding you back, you need to make a plan. What do you need to change? What new habits do you need to develop? What skills do you need to learn? What do you need to become in order to reach that next level? But here's the key. Don't try to change everything at once. Reinvention is a process, not an overnight transformation. Focus on one thing at a time. Start with the habits or routines that are having the biggest impact on your life and your restaurant. Now, once you've mastered those, move on to the next. And remember, this isn't about becoming someone completely different. It's about evolving into the best version of yourself. It's about shedding the parts of you that are no longer serving you and stepping into a version of yourself that is ready for greatness. So here's the real cost of staying the same. If you're not growing, you're dying. If you're not constantly pushing yourself to evolve, you're going to stagnate. And once you start stagnating, it's only a matter of time before you start falling behind. I mean, the world is moving forward with or without you. The restaurant industry is evolving. Guest expectations are changing and new challenges are emerging every single day. If you're not evolving, if you're not constantly pushing yourself to grow, you're going to get left behind. You must be willing to do the work. You must be willing to let go of the person you are today in order to become the person that you're meant to be. It's not easy, but it is necessary. So wrapping this up, the version of you that got you here is not the version that's going to take you to the next level. It's time to let go of who you've been and embrace who you need to become. Reinvention is not a one time event. It is a continuous process of growth and evolution. If you want to break through to the next level, you must be willing to do whatever it takes to reinvent yourself.
