Short excerpt from a Donald Burns YouTube video about language in coaching/leadership. In this passage Burns and another speaker critique clients saying "I'll try" or "I should," urging coaches and clients to remove "try" from their vocabulary and use firmer commitments when assigning tasks.
And I have clients where we have great relationships, and they'll. And. And I'll. And I'll tell them something like, we need to do this by next week. And they'll be like, all right, I'll try to do it.
Then they'll pause, and they'll say, I.
Know you're gonna say something right now. I know you're gonna. I'm like, why are you even using that word? Like, take that word out of your vocabulary.
We don't say try. We don't say should.
Right?
Yeah. That's like, words I like. I'll stop. Same like you. As soon as someone says try, say. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Did you just use the T word? I'd rather. I'd rather have you tell me to right.
If your restaurant only works because you work 80 hours a week, it doesn't work.
