Reason #5 Why infidelity counseling fails (even when you both want to fix it)

In this segment Dr. Monique Thompson explains that infidelity recovery does not fail because partners lack desire, therapy, forgiveness, or an apology. The failure stems from a single, deeper issue: couples are unable to have the deep, honest conversation about why the affair occurred because they cannot emotionally regulate themselves. This emotional dysregulation is rooted in untreated betrayal trauma. Reason #5—being unable to discuss how the affair happened—actually ties back to earlier reasons that also involve unresolved trauma. To move forward, the betrayal trauma must be processed so the nervous system can permit the necessary dialogue. Dr. Thompson positions herself as an infidelity recovery specialist and invites viewers to seek help.
