Short spoken monologue by Eric Deeran contrasting being a technician (skilled practitioner: DP, editor, gaffer — gig-to-gig) with being a business owner (owner of a system). Main claim: technicians are time-limited by their personal hours (24/day), while business owners gain leverage by hiring others and multiplying available time; leverage is presented as the decisive advantage.

So one of the biggest things, biggest misconceptions I think a lot of people have is that being a technician is being a business owner. When at the end of the day they're not the same thing, they're two separate things. When you're a technician, you're a dp, an editor, you're a gaffer, you're someone who is a gig to gig type person, which is totally fine, there's nothing wrong with that. But being a business owner means that you own a system. Being a technician just means that you're really good at a skill. And when you're really good at a skill, that's great. But you're capped at the amount of time you have in the day, which happens to be 24 hours a day. We all have the same amount of time. Whereas when you're a business owner, you have infinite amounts of time, because you can hire a person every single time you need to and increase the amount of time that you get. So if you have five people, you have five times 24 hours. And so when you're a business owner, you have leverage. And whoever has the most amount of leverage at the end of the day wins.
