A filmmaker explains why custom video work backfired: clients asked for what they thought they needed instead of letting him diagnose the real problem. He learned that productized services work better than blank-slate requests.
Really the problem. One of the problems was, like, I was. I did anything and everything, and it was always a blank slate. And someone would come to me and, you know, they would need a video. And I'd say, okay, well, what kind of video do you need? And then they kind of describe it. And then I would, you know, just come up with an extremely customized, you know, video. And. And I would give it to them, and usually it would be great. Sometimes it wouldn't because they were, you know, telling me what they needed as opposed to you diagnosing the problem and then kind of telling them what you felt like they needed based on the problem.
