Eric Deeran argues that referrals create a ceiling, not growth. Seven problems: you depend on others' schedules, revenue stays unpredictable, declining bad fits damages relationships, there's no compounding system, pricing gets stuck at discount rates, your pipeline collapses when referrers get busy, and losing your network leaves you with nothing.

Here's why referrals are a ceiling, not a strategy to scale your video or creative agency. Number 1, the volume is dictated by other people's calendars, meaning that people only refer you when they want to. Number 2, you can't predict next month's revenue because you can't predict how many referrals you're going to get next month. You can only guess. Number 3, bad fit referrals feel rude to decline, meaning if somebody refers you somebody but they're not really a good fit, you still kind of have to take that relationship because if not, they're going to go back to your other client that referred you and it's going to feel rude and you might ruin that relationship. Number 4, there's no marketing system that's being built, meaning that you're not building a system that compounds over time. You're literally just relying on luck to get your next client, and that's not a strategy. Number 5, Pricing stays anchored at the friend rates or the rates that you gave the person who referred them. You're going to tell that person how much you charge them and you can't really raise your prices because they already know. Number 6, your pipeline dies when referrals get busy. And number 7, you're one network shift away from zero, meaning if all your referrals go away, you start over at zero. You have nothing coming in and you're in a tough spot. Put together a short video on the next page breaking down exactly how you can start getting an inbound system in place so you don't have to rely on referrals. Click link below.
