Steve Hernandez, maintenance manager at Pretium Packaging in Anaheim, explains how Guidewheel cut response times to machine downtime through phone alerts and team engagement. The system lets operators tag issues in real time and uses charts to spot problems before they happen.

My name is Steve Hernandez. I am the maintenance manager here at the Anaheim, California location. Before Guidewell, the way we were managing the process on the machines was we would have to go to every machine and physically ask the operator exactly what the machine went down for and we would have to document it in some way.
We are able to react in a more timely manner. Something that we might have not noticed prior to using Guide Wheel might have taken us a week or two to try to react. And now our actions are not instantaneous, but they're a lot more timely than they used to be.
The team members that frequently use the Guide wheel the most are the production manager, plant manager, myself and the supervisors. So that's where we get a lot of the exposure to what machines are going to be down and how we can react.
When using Guideweeld. Our lives here at Pretium have changed quite a bit now that we're able to get alerts on phones as it pertains to downtime. We are able to react whether we're at home or here at work that hey, there's a problem with the machine and we need to react accordingly.
The influence on team dynamics through Guide Wheel has been that our people are more engaged as to what machines are down, how long they're down for, and they are genuinely concerned as to why the machines are down.
Our team has been more proactive using Guide Wheel because we are using the charts and the trends so we can monitor closely the running of the machines on a day to day basis. We are currently trying to set up a system where we're able to post something on our boards to show the trends of the machine. The operators can take more ownership of the machines themselves.
One of the best practices that we use for tracking downtime is the tagging of the downtime whenever the machine goes down. So we are daily entering the tagging of the machine's downtime into the Guidewell system.
We were able to see results with Guidewell almost instantaneously.
