Femi Lazarus explains how social media algorithms bribe you in two ways: dictating what you say and hiding information from you. Platforms push sensational gossip over real news because that's what keeps you scrolling. Your individual voice doesn't threaten governments, but the influencers you amplify do.
What is trending is trending for you and because of you. It is trending because it is— you can't demand for it, that's why you follow it. It is trending because they know you prefer the hot gist than the one that affects your life. Structures are built based on the examination of you.

which of these news do you think will trend in your country? 20 people kidnapped or somebody sleeping with another person's wife?

Femi Lazarus. Go and check most of your blogs. They will rather discuss the hot gist than to discuss the consequential one. There are two ways to bribe a person. You can bribe them in terms of what to say, then you can bribe them in terms of what to be blind to. If you scroll through your phone, that the algorithm brings you nonsense, to a lame man that sounds like you are blaming people that they are bringing nonsense. But those who understand how algorithm work know that no, it's because you are watching nonsense. You're not a threat to any government if you're part of the masses. The people you listen to are the threat. As much as you're broke, you are still somebody's food.
