Ali, a marketer turned agency owner, reflects on the mental shift required to lead a service business. He explores how the skills that made him successful as a marketer don't automatically translate to running a company, and what it takes to become the best president and owner.
As a marketer turned agency owner, I have long seen myself as a very good marketer. I'm a very good marketer. I'm a very good communicator. I'm a good content creator. That's my lane and I know how to drive in that lane very, very well. I'm not opposed to getting my hands dirty. When you look at how to grow a company a lot of times if you Google this and you read on entrepreneur McKinsey or even you know, first round review, you come up with ideas that are based on product companies or E commerce or retail or manufacturing, whatever. We're selling to ours and we're selling trust and we're selling intangibles. And when I realized that we're a service company I had to take a step back and this has been a challenge for me to say how do I become the best president owner of a services business versus the best marketer anybody knows? And I'm still working on that.
