How Kyle Jepson Creates LinkedIn Videos: A Behind-the-Scenes Look + HubSpot Campaigns Update

Kyle Jepson walks through his entire process for making LinkedIn videos, from equipment and recording to editing and transcription. He also covers a new HubSpot campaigns feature for tracking spend.
Hey, friends, just want to give you a quick behind the scenes look at how I create my LinkedIn videos. So I am going to, for real, create an actual LinkedIn video and show you how I do it. So first of all, setup is very basic here. I have my webcam I'm using just built into my computer. I have a light bulb to put a little extra light on my face because I have windows behind me and I don't want to be backlit. And I have a pretty nice yeti microphone. Honestly, audio is the most important thing, especially if you're doing screen recordings. People need to be able to understand what you're saying. But I could, I could legitimately just use the mic built in on my computer and probably be fine. So don't overthink the equipment piece. If you have a smartphone, if you have a webcam in your computer, you're probably good to get started. Then I have a screen recording software I use called screenflow. I like it. It's Mac only. It's a one time purchase. You could literally just use loom for free and, and also be fine. The idea of getting started is just getting started. So don't let this setup deter you. Just use whatever you've got and give it a try. I find the hardest thing for me and for other people is to feel natural talking to the webcam. I've made literally hundreds of these LinkedIn videos now, so it ain't no thing really, but something I think would be really nice, you know, like me, I love my family. There's my wife and kids in a recent selfie we took. They're adorable. They make me feel happy. I feel like if I had to explain HubSpot to anyone, that's who I would want to explain it to. And so you could literally, and I will do this right now, just grab some masking tape and make a little loop and I'm going to just tape my family up right here on the wall behind my webcam. And I'm going to deliver this video to them because they're great and I love them so much I might cry during this video. All right, so now we're all set. I am going to show you that this doesn't have to take any time at all. This is normal kitchen timer set to zero minutes. I have already figured out what I'm going to demo and so I'm ready to go. I have it full screen on my computer here. Have my recording software ready to go. And look, we're just gonna hit start. Timer is Ticking up. So that way if I do jump cuts or stuff, you at least know I'm not lying to you. Here we go. Record. I get a 5 second countdown on my screen. Hey friends, another cool update to the campaigns tool so you can now track your spend. Check it out. So here I am on the campaigns page and if we just create a new campaign, we're going to start from scratch. And look, we now have a currency field. That's great. So I'm going to use US dollars and we could set a budget. This has been here for a while. Budget used to be a text field. We recently made an actual currency field. Big step up. Let's say this is $100 campaign. I don't know, there's now this spend field and we can keep track of how much this is going to cost us. So I mean, Maybe I've spent 10 bucks on this video already. I don't know. Now if we create this, oh, we got to give it a name. This is my campaign. Now if we create this, we will be taken to this page. And look, you can see budget and spend right here. And as time goes on, if you want to edit the campaign to update the spend, we just spent another $5. You can do that, you can update it. So that's all there is to it right now, just a little place for you to track your spend. But big things are coming. Keep an eye on this space. I'll let you know as we add spend to reports and as we give you the ability to track spend against budget. These are all things that are coming in the near future. But for now, feel free to identify your budget, your currency and your spend and start tracking that. That's your update for today. Let me know what you think. Let me know if you have any questions. So a slight mistake in there that doesn't often happen to me. I think you make me nervous looking over my shoulder like that. But so far we're, you know, a minute and 45 seconds into this process of creating a video. Now I'm just going to come over here and we will quickly resize this. So the, my camera here is, it records at 720. So I always do 720. You could do 1080, but I mean you're going to get a bigger file and it's just going to take longer to upload. I'm resizing myself to be the full screen and then I'm resizing the screen down to fit there also. And what I have here is. You can't see it. It's too far away. But I have on my timeline two things. One is my video and audio and the other is the screen recording. I'm going to detach the audio. So just like that. Ta da. Really easy. And then. Yep, that's a good start. So we'll just drag this. So I always say check it out. That helps me know where to cut me. Right. And then I can just watch. And I'm looking at my screen, I'm looking at my screen. Oh, now I'm looking back up so that. There we go. And we'll split the head there and. And Ta da. And then I'll resize this. I don't know if this step is actually necessary. You can't tell what I'm doing. But I just. Now I have a single timeline. Right. Then I'll come trim the end. All right. And honestly I'd be happy to just export this out right now but because I did have that little mistake. Find that. Okay, we'll just mask that cut and right there. How about that slide? Let's just make sure that looks okay already. I don't know. Got to give it a name. This is my campaign. Okay, great. Now I'll just export that out. File export and I like to identify the hub. So marketing. And then this is campaign spend and I'm going to make sure it's exporting at the right size, which is 720 and export. So we're now four minutes into this process. Not bad for a minute 12 second video. Especially one that I made a mistake in. I have a program I use called Descript that gives me subtitles. So while that is exporting from screenflow, I'll get Descript opening up here and it's erased to see which one will be done first. Descript is great because it just automatically transcribes things and gives you subtitles super fast as you will see in just a minute. So still waiting on screenflow to export here. It'll get there, don't worry. Old reliable. Done. Ok, so now I can just find that file and drag it here to descript. Descript is now transcribing it. We are at five minute mark. Okay, descript is now done. Five minutes and 45 seconds. So it took like 45 seconds to transcribe. I'm just gonna export this out as a subtitles file export save and I'm done. Now I have a video and subtitles that I can upload to LinkedIn. We'll call it a six minute process to make a minute and a half long video. It would have been less if I had not messed up and had to edit that out. But yeah, I just. I just want to let you know, you don't have to overthink this. You can do it really quick in a single take. You know, the first time I did this, it probably didn't go this smoothly, but now that I've done it a couple hundred times, it goes really smoothly. So that's all there is to making these videos. Not a lot of production value going into it, not a lot of forethought, just enthusiasm and a desire to share with others. So if you've got that, you can make videos and I encourage you to do so.
