Chris.
I'm Chris Carolyn, joined by my co hosts Casey Hawkins and George B. Thomas. We are here every weekday morning to make sure you're not sleeping on HubSpot's true capabilities. If you're joining live, drop a hello in the comments and let us know what you're building in HubSpot today. And if you're just discovering us, we're now available as a podcast on Spotify and Apple Music, so you never have to miss an episode. June 2nd. Happy Monday. How are we doing?
Happy Monday. Happy June.
Yeah, Happy, happy Monday. Also, happy three year anniversary as of yesterday. That's when we went out on our own and launched the business. I can't believe it's been three years already, which is crazy. But. But here we are doing HubSpot updates on a Monday.
Three years.
Three years.
Congrats. And that was since George B. Thomas.
Yeah.
Was that Sidekick Strategies?
George B. Thomas.
George, Nice.
Yeah.
I think you're doing all right, man. Good work. Good decision. We're still here.
We're still here.
Yeah.
Still trying to help humans with HubSpot, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I didn't realize. Three years. And that's amazing.
Yeah, it's crazy. It's. Time flies when you're having fun. I'm just gonna throw that out there.
It does indeed.
I mean, I'm trying to remember when I first. When George B. Thomas first arrived in my life.
Oh, geez.
I don't.
I don't remember.
I mean, surely it was the podcast for me.
Oh, thanks. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Over the last three years. So I'm happy to celebrate 2017.
Chris. That's, that's. That's a while.
The hubcast man.
Yeah.
And prior to 2017, almost no audiobooks or, or like, or business podcasts of any kind. It was all sports. It was all. So that was a great introduction to probably B2B and SAS in the way that it needed to be for me. So I probably get to owe my. My, My addiction to this universe to one George B. Thomas and one Marcus Sheridan. So thank you for that.
Yes. You're very welcome.
Yeah, I definitely. I mean, I don't think this is what George meant to happen, but I think he definitely made.
It's certain kind of uncomfortable right now.
You made HubSpot fun. You did see that.
That. Okay, I'm gonna clock out for the day. I'm gonna. All my clients that I am doing no work today just to hear you made HubSpot fun. I'm. I'm good.
And this is all achieved. And this is. So was it eight years later since at least I was introduced and the making it fun continues and we're somehow finding new levels.
Yeah.
To take it to. We've got one update that we'll get back to today, but really excited for this new HubSpot help call in show. Yeah.
This is gonna be. I'm not exactly sure what this is going to be, but when I look at the lineup and I think of the concept, I get excited. Like. Yeah, yeah, it's. I'll shut up now.
In my mission, like most people, when I get a chance to talk to, you'll know I only show up as the host on. On shows because I feel like it's. It's a. Creates a space for other people to do it. But when I get. When I get to help Kyle, like, get excited, somebody like Kyle Jepsen who already gets excited every day with updates.
Yeah.
But even, like, take it to the next level, that's like, mission complete for me. And seeing these spaces get created for new ways of thinking of a HubSpot, new ways of engaging, you know, moving away from tutorials and.
Yeah.
The stuff that's like, it's really hard to do that stuff and keep up right now.
Yeah. So, yeah, I, I have. I haven't done too many tutorials in the last couple years. Jorge at our organization continue to do like, the tutorial front for us. But it's. It's interesting, like shows like this that we're doing shows like the, you know, Hub Heroes podcast. It's unconventional, but we try to have fun. We still try to talk about HubSpot, but this right here, Brother Casey is in here. Rob Jones is in here. Kyle Jepsen is in here. I'm in here. And the idea of, like, call in show and. And here's where my brain goes is the, the idea of the layers of madness that are gonna happen because I know how my brain works. Right, Kyle, say something. And. And then you'll hear rob, oh, yeah, yeah. And you could. You could xyz. And then I'd be like, yeah, yeah, yeah, you could. You could 1, 2, 3. Because of the XYZ. And then spin back around, and then Casey would be like, oh, yeah, yeah, you could. I don't even know what numbers or letters to use anymore, ladies and gentlemen. But, like, just the layers on these people who, before they call, are in a place of either discomfort or confusion or just challenged because they want to do something strategic, you know, but they're just not sure how. Or not sure if, by the way, the not sure if is maybe more dangerous than the not sure how. Anyway, so, like, it excites me to think about the amount of mass value that we could be giving those individual humans. But then just the lurkers. You know who you are. You show up at the show, but you never call in. What's wrong with you? Call in, ask question. Anyway, I'll be quiet.
Well, I'm. I'm really excited about this. I have said this before, but I remember when I first started freelancing, and I remember feeling really lost and really alone because I went. I went from an agency, and then it was just me. And especially freelancing because people would ask me hard questions and I would often feel really lost. And I was really glad when I found this Rocketeer community. I was really glad when I found the, like, community advocates. And now we have profoundly. Like, there's so much more community. But I would have been so glad to have this, like, call in show at that time when I was getting asked hard questions and I really would look around and my dog Frank wouldn't have any answers to Frank's.
Like, I have no clue. Yeah. Like, and here's what's fun. Like, I imagine there'll be a day when one, if not all the hosts, even though they're on the show, do a fake call in. Like, hey, Rogers and Sisters, I'm struggling because we're trying to do X, you know, Like, I. Which, by the way, I. I have to circle back around on something you said, Casey, because I think it's so important. Like, feeling alone is a real thing. Like in the HubSpot ecosystem and especially in a world that we live in post pandemic, where there's so many of that stand in a room that could have been someone's bedroom at some point in time or sit in a room that is our living room after 5:30pm and you're just, you're out here doing your thing and you're like, does anybody see me? Does anybody care? Am I doing a good job? Like, do. Like it's a. And so I think having this show that from 3pm to 4pm is that Central time.
So it's like, it's Eastern.
It's Eastern.
Okay.
That's weird.
This Friday. This Friday, June 6th.
Yeah.
Format here live. Collins Real problems, authentic solutions. It's free. And I love this why so much comes back to why I show up every day. Like every problem we solve on the show, other people have these problems, right. And it's going to help others. So even if you. It's challenging to put yourself out there on live, call in. Right. We're not asking everybody to do that, but if it helps take you over the. Get over that hurdle, like, you're probably going to be helping a lot of others just by explaining the problem the way that you explain it, the way that you experience it. And like George said, getting live experts to tackle it from all these different directions.
So, Chris, curious in the text that your cursor is currently.
Yeah, yeah, I think There's a problem.
Three to four eastern. If I go down to the LinkedIn information.
Yeah, I see it.
Let's fix that. Ladies and gentlemen, please show up at 3 to 4 Eastern. That is when I will be there, Kyle will be there, and that is when Casey will be there. So show up.
Good call. Good call. Hard to be live if the time is not right. And we'll be dropping the phone number in the next 24 to 48 hours. So we'll be having. Collins, like, you can leave messages. You know, obviously this has been done in a lot of other spaces. Car talk is one that comes up a lot as a. As something that, you know, is. Is in the. The real world that we can bring in over to the business side because we got real people, you know, working on the business side, too. So excited for that one. So we're. We'll be dropping that phone number soon, so stay tuned.
Can't wait. I'm gonna call in and prank the crap out of that number. Somebody can hear it. No, I'm not. I'm not. I'm really not.
Ladies, you are right. I didn't even think. I was like, wait, I do have a question. I'm working on something.
Yeah, they play the thing and it's like Casey's voice, but like, hi, this is Joanna from I'm curious.
Yeah, weird.
What do you think, guys, should we help Joanna out?
I have no idea. So I'm really hoping you guys do.
Well. We got time for sure and that's why we're showing up on Friday, three to four Eastern on June 6 and every Friday after that. We're really excited to get this started and now that we have, we appreciate these breaths of of these moments to breathe that HubSpot provides only one update today. So so that we can kind of look back and say, all right, what do we do with all these updates now? I've changed all my portals, so hopefully that show and that series will help round things out. Lists, Quick Action, Use in Email and Use in List what is it? The Use in Actions menu inside any list lets you quickly gain insights or take action on your HubSpot list. There are two new quick actions. Use an email takes you directly to an email draft or a new email with your list already attached. And number two, Use in Lists automatically applies your list as a filter in a new list so you can further expand or refine your segment.
I am very excited about I was not. Why does it matter? Setting an email or creating a list based on another list are two of the most common actions you might want to take. After creating a list previously, you would have to navigate to the email and complete the email creation process or restart the list creation process to build a list based on another list. This adds unnecessary steps to the most common actions you might want to take using a list. I do have a. I have a story.
You tell your story. Because then I have a thought.
One, maybe two years ago, I was on a call with a HubSpot rep with one of my clients and we were taking a look at some stuff and the HubSpot rep used this use in to create a custom report. I hadn't. I don't think I've ever touched the button. Like, I just didn't know that this button did anything and she did it and I was like, what did you just. I was like, that's so cool. And I've used it a lot ever since. But I for me it was a very hidden feature and I still to this day will show clients that they can build reports. So I'm excited about this next step.
So I'm curious and I want to go mess around with this because here's something that I've taught for years and that is the clone button is a HubSpot superpower. And so many times I would be like, okay, so what you can do is you should start by Having used the Persona tool properly in HubSpot, once you've used that properly in HubSpot, you should probably create lists based on the Personas that you're actually leveraging in HubSpot for segmentation. Now, now that you have those lists, the superpower of cloning those lists and getting micro segmented based on the way that they answer the questions that you're asking is a next level. But then my brain goes to well, based on this, when do I clone and when do I use in list? Because would it make sense to actually be it to be a filter then based on something else that I'm doing versus anyway, did I just confuse myself or did I confuse anybody else? Like when to clone and when to use in list, do you use.
Can you open that bottom one up? That bottom image up? Chris?
This one?
Yeah. Do you do this at all?
George is member of stage one customer in the US So. Well, see, I don't understand the context of did they use that list in this list or. Because this list named.
It's a filter. So like we. I personally, I use, I use this all the time to make groups or refine from bigger groups of people. List membership management.
Yeah, because I do this too because like in theory, if my. Then I only have to edit one list to change. Like if this is like my ICP list rather than cloning all my ICP criteria over a bunch of different lists. Yeah, I just have one ICP criteria list and then I use list membership is that. And job title is CEO. CEO or whatever.
So then my question, and this is where my brain goes and you can tell me, and I'm glad we only had one update because it allows us to do this thing that we're doing right now. Now as. And do. When I hear you say that. Am I hearing you say that? Because then if you adjust the one list, it just waterfalls down through the other list that you have attached. Okay, okay, okay, okay.
Oh, did Chris, did we teach George B. Thomas something today?
Interesting.
I feel like we're likely just describing it poorly and that he does something very similar. But this is a, this is really like most people are sleeping on the power lists.
Yeah, yeah.
In that they don't use them enough or they create one for every one time event that they're doing. But when you see like the most intricate, you know, system mindsets in our ecosystem, it's almost always built on this very elaborate infrastructure, very valuable infrastructure of list management. Like and how that feeds workflows, especially in a way that you know becomes manageable and maintainable and just not like lists, I feel like are the thing that most practitioners I've seen they err on the side of more lists than less because it drives so much of the rest of the portal.
Yeah, there's a. There's a couple things I'll say that I've seen historically over the last decade of helping people with HubSpot. One so many times there are more static lists than active lists in a portal, which scares the crap out of me because it means that we don't fully understand what active lists are or the power of having active lists. The amount of times that I've had to explain the ebb and flow scenario of an active list to HubSpot users is quite interesting. And they have hard time dissecting their brain of historical platforms with tagging versus properties and then property options being the filters to then allow the ebb and flow of an import to then go into like 17 different lists out of one import versus like feeling stuck in that static list. Anyway, so, so one, if you're listening this or watching this, you're not embracing like active lists and how to get things to ebb and flow. Second of all, no, I don't think you guys were explaining something poorly and I think that there's a larger conversation that could be had because I have really never thought about water flow style lists and if I have not thought about water flow style lists, there are probably about a bazillion in one. Actually there's not that many HubSpot users, but there's probably a large amount of HubSpot users that don't know or have not thought about doing a waterfall style list or understand the two to three, five to seven times that a waterfall waterfall style list might make sense for something that they're trying to build in HubSpot. But that, that could be a great piece of content to create in the future. I would read it.
I was about to say there's a LinkedIn post coming to a feed near you.
There you go. I love it. I love it. My job here is done. I've made HubSpot happy. And Casey create content. This is beautiful.
There we go.
I'm thinking I need to just create more like image based posts again.
Oh, this is a great example and why we're here. I expected to be doing this at some point when, when we stop having like 10 per day where while we're going 100 miles an hour in one direction, all the other things.
One direction.
All the other things in HubSpot get impacted by all these updates and we rarely talk about that. Right. So always meant to be a part of this. It's not just about the 800 updates this year, but it's about what about all the basic stuff, the foundational stuff and how do we start using that? Because even like, and this is what I love to think about the system mindset of like, if you can see this, this new layout, I would have to imagine this is in a marketing email. Edit, inbox settings, send options, schedule, organize after send. That's a part of the new layout. Probably before they had this layout and developed this part better, it would have been harder to create use in from the list perspective. Very cool to see how all these things come together. That's one of the reasons we're here every day to hopefully help it make, make it easier for, for, for you guys out there watching and listening.
Let me, let me close the loop on something because many of you might watch this and be like, how in God's name does George know who One Direction is? Listen, I have, I have daughters. I have daughters. This is why I know who One Direction is. That's why I made that really bad dad joke. Second of all, Chris, as we're talking about this this morning, you are literally unlocking something that has been bugging the crap out of me for a very good amount of time. And that is so many of us as HubSpot users feel like we need to know the latest and greatest and we need to keep up with the updates. And that's the whole premise of this show. But what happens when you become a human? Let's just say your name is George B. Thomas and you realize that you can decimate the foundational pieces that people need to understand, but you feel lost in the wilderness when it comes to everything that's flying off the shelf. Like, this is a reality that we live in, ladies and gentlemen. And I'm just saying this because I want you to know, even the most seasoned pro deal with the mental anguish at the rate and speed of things that we have to understand or feel like we need to know. And so some of us are so busy chasing, like, what's coming off the shelf that we're forgetting to focus on what actually is the firm foundation that will be our support and our success of. And so, like, anyway, I don't. Yes, a whole show on itself, but.
Well, it's lots of shows, turns out. And that's a little bit about what I've been up to and that, like, step One is give yourself permission not to keep up because you can't. Nobody can. I mean, we show up here every day.
Yeah.
And it only takes a couple hours for us to like see a new update. Man, if only that would have come out like during our show, we would have been able to talk about it. Now we gotta wait until tomorrow. Right? Like hours go by and there's already FOMO happening for people who show up every day and just talk about updates. Which is why it takes a village, it takes a whole community. And the activity on LinkedIn these shows, shows like the HubSpot Help Call in show coming up on June 6th. This week with Kyle Jepsen, Casey Hawkins, George B. Thomas and Rob Jones. It's why we do what we do. HubSpot's a big old platform now.
I hope that someone calls in and asks about Waterfall List and George V. Thomas will say, I know how to do that.
Hey, there's this new feature in this person named Casey.
There we go. That's where we'll wrap for today. Remember folks, you probably already own the solution you're looking for in HubSpot and it might be the use in list. Quick action today. Sometimes you just need to wake up to it. Join us tomorrow morning live at 7:30am Central or catch us anytime on Spot, Spotify and Apple Music. Drop your biggest takeaway in the comments and let us know what capabilities you want to wake up to next. Until then, I'm Chris. Carolyn.
I'm Casey Hall.
