"You shouldn't be on your own org chart."

A founder explains why putting yourself on the org chart is a mistake. You need to hire people smarter than you, not do everything yourself. The goal is to build a team that doesn't need you.

If you're building an agency, you're building an agency on the backs of people. Find amazing people, cultivate amazing people, retain amazing people. When they're retainable, sometimes they'll move on and that's perfectly fine too. Don't try to keep them because peak performers are repelled by being contained. But man, people are the most important part of your business by far. By far. All of my successes massively outpace my capabilities. When you meet me, you're like, I can't believe that guy did all the shit that he did because I look homeless and I'm not really as bright as I pretend to be. Again, I'm not self deprecating. It's a fact. My success outpaces my capability because I found other people that were more capable than me. Everybody that works for me is stronger along the level of analysis that I've hired them for than I am. Of course, obviously, right? You want your video editor to be a better video editor than you are. Otherwise, why do you have him or her? You shouldn't be on your own org chart. Entrepreneurship's not fulfillment. You shouldn't be doing the work, you should be hiring for it. People are critically important.
