Unedited Gudorf Family Film Reel

The video is an unedited, diarized recording assembled by Greg Gudorf that stitches together a live 1987 NFC Divisional Playoff broadcast (Giants vs. 49ers) featuring Pat Summerall and John Madden’s play‑by‑play and analysis, interleaved with period radio and TV commercials (Bandtronk nicotine tablets, Miller High Life, Ford, Contel, Allstate, etc.), news bulletins (train collision in Maryland, hotel fire in Puerto Rico, weather, and other headlines), and spontaneous family dialogue about back pain remedies, smoking cessation, personal anecdotes, and references to family members (Sam and Greg Gudorf). The transcript captures detailed game events, player performances, promotional pitches, and fragmented personal moments, illustrating a nostalgic, chaotic home‑video collage that blends sports, advertising, news, and family life.

They tried to reverse, it didn't work. So it was third down, so they needed 5 yards. So they go to kick the field goal, would have been a 49-yarder. All of a sudden, right before the ball snapped, the kicker runs, splits out as a receiver. Phil Simms stands up next to the ball, bombs it, got a first down on the 5-yard line. Oh, for God's sake, that's great. Hey, did that fake stuff, you know, they scored a touchdown, and then the 49ers had the ball, first pass to Jerry Rice. Hey, David! David! Hey, David! What? Got it? Yeah. Okay. The Bears were really very confident and felt they had a great chance of beating Chicago, and, you know, of course they went in and did it. I think there are a lot of reasons for it. First of all, the week before when they played the Rams, they had a similar game plan against— —the league's premier running back. He ran the rookie quarterback before the ball, and they felt that they didn't get Everett in a position where he had to— The Harvard Dictionary, please exercise caution. Running game gave Ford Flutie to throw. They felt every time Flutie put the ball in the air, they had a pretty good chance of coming down with it, so they're very confident. A couple other factors too, Vince, that were very important. They were beat up, banged up football team. There's no question about that. They were hurt. But the fact that Russ Grimm played that entire game with bruised ribs and Joe Jacoby played the game with that broken right hand was a great inspirational lift to that football team. Just one more thought about today's game. I came down the tunnel with Joe Montana when he went in the locker room. His eyes were glazed, and the Giants players, they walked in just a second ago, they get excited.
I've never seen anything like it before in my life.
All right, there's one final note on the Redskins. When I was inside their locker room prior to yesterday's game, I've never seen a looser bunch of athletes. John Madden alluded to Jay Schroeder. He's a great athlete. He's only one victory away from a Super Bowl. We'll come back and take a look at the second half of the Giants and the 49ers right after these messages from your local station. Pass from Jim to Rice. Got up for a first down, and penalty marker's down.
Look at Dwight Clark trying to tackle Jim Kurt.
I think it's going to be against Elvis Patterson against Rice.
I think it is too. He was, he was tight man-to-man coverage, following him all the way in.
Dwight Clark needs an overhaul.
Well, you got to get some, some stuff back underneath some stuff. Greg Clark was saying that he had a sore throat yesterday. The doctor started to spray him, though. Pass interference, number 34, defense, automatic first down. Thinking he had the flow, but all he did, he had a sore throat from singing. There he goes right there. You saw Patterson there. I guess it was that left hand in there. To me, that's pretty good coverage. I think that's pretty tight coverage.
I would accept that. Automatic first down. They show blitz again and they back out. Jeff Kemp outside to Rice, bounces one time, hops out of bounds. Herb Welch. Should be enough for another San Francisco first down. Montana still in the locker room. The word we got was possible concussion. He might be back, but he still hasn't returned.
The 49ers are off to a good start here with Jeff Kemp at quarterback in the second half, but Remember the first half, he started the same way, hit Jerry Rice with a quick post pattern. He brought the fade to the end zone, he just fumbles the ball.
That was kind of terrible after that. Rice goes wide to the right this time. Greg Gudorf behind Kemp, that's pretty good motion. Kemp outside, working with Perry. Up in a hurry is Carl Banks.
I'll tell you, today in this game, Carl Banks is the best player in the field. I mean, He's been— we've seen him blitz, we've seen him come in and stop the run. Now we see him run out and cover Roger Craig and make an open field tackle for no gain. Watch him. Craig is going to come to the outside. He was in motion. Boom, here comes 58 right down the line, makes that tackle, and Craig doesn't take another step forward. He just throws him right on the ground. Now a loss of 1.
They get 2nd and 11. Kip looking in the direction of Kemp throws down the middle for no one. Russ Francis might have been the closest 49er, but Kemp was under pressure from Lawrence Taylor.
There's been talk all week about how the 49ers are going to take advantage of Herb Welch, who's starting there at the weak safety position. Of course, if you get pressure like that, you're not going to be able to get deep to the weak safety anyway. You and I could play safety.
Wow, Bob. The reason this is happening Out, Temper Johnson is a Giant linebacker, number 52. Third down, 11. Temper Johnson standing up in the middle. Craig away from Welch in a moment, but not enough for a first down. Welch takes down Roger Craig after a gain of 7. The 49ers will have the ball.
You can just feel Herb Welch's determination here to make that tackle. That's the thing that the Giant coaches have been talking about second year about. They challenged him on that. You got to be able to do that, and you can just feel Herb Welch ticking that as he was chasing Roger Craig.
Taking the place of the injured Jerry Kennard, doing a fine job. Rudder, the punt for the 49ers. McConkie standing at his own 10. McConkie, no fair catch, at the 18, about the 24 before he's stopped by Randy Cross, 28-3, the Giants over San Francisco with 12:22 left, third quarter. Your money, son, but if you want my advice, buy another silver. Sure, Dad. Pauline Green should buy a silver. Insurance.

Because you just never know when you're gonna need insurance. Excuse me.

What's that? A total loss of concentration. What's that? An inability to speak clearly. I don't want to drink the Big Mac attack. An urge to share? Mm-hmm. Uh, what about the Coke? Next week it begins with the NFL Today, the NFC Championship Game that follows. The Redskins are in against either these Giants or these 49ers. It's the 49ers, it'll be a candlestick. If it's the Giants, we'll be back here.
It would be interesting. Now it looks like it's going to be the Giants, and if it is the Giants, that'll be the third time that they've met this season. The Giants beat them here on a Monday night game Remember, in fact, it was the—
it was the—
oh yeah, now there's, there's quite an idea to put that sheet around both of us.
We could wear that, wear that sheet. Why would they want you for vice?
I don't know, just kind of the second guy, the bottom guy that kind of, kind of catches everything that falls through the cracks.
Okay, ball's at the 25. Sims, Lawrence, and one man Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley to make the stop.
You know, Charles Haley, we talked about him being from Big James Madison. Remember a couple weeks ago when we were in Washington and we had that waiter at the restaurant? He said, he said, every time anyone says James Madison, they always say little. It's like, you know, like little James Madison College. He said, we got over 10,000 guys there, 10,000 students.
I said, you guys? Yeah, you guys. I never said little.
Big James Madison.
Outside the 30, about the 32, a gain of 5. It'll bring up a third down, and again Charles Haley and Ronnie Lott make the stop.
Of course, Charles Haley's from Big James Madison, and the other guy from Big James Madison is Gary Clark, Washington Redskins wide receiver. That's two pretty good NFL players, I would say. Gary Clark is a Pro Bowl type player, and Haley is going to be one. They say he's a lot like Trent Dean, you know, that, that's going to be the big strong defensive lineman that has good leverage and great speed, footwork, same kind of function.
There's Sam Gudorf, so far he has a first down. You know, we said this before about him, John, but a lot of backs have to sort of glide before they make the cut, and he can make that cut at top speed. You know, and the, and the thing about that is is having strong lower legs, strong calves, and strong ankles can make you make that cut at full speed.
That's what he does. He doesn't have to keep turning.
He reads things so well, gets it turned upfield, turns it up for a first down. Something, uh, Ronnie Lott discussing something with the official. Obviously had something to do with the clock and when we started. 30-second clock now starts up again. Morris is the deep back. Maurice Cotton in front of him. It's back to Joe Morris. Morris around the corner, out of bounds. A gain of 6. Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, where the Giants lead the 49ers in the NFC Divisional Playoff 28-3. 49ers committed 3 turnovers. The Giants turned all 3 of them into touchdowns. Joe Morris has 127 yards rushing. Joe Montana is still in the 49er locker room with a concussion. And Phil Simms, again quietly, has had another good day. Flag.
Oh, Eric Carpenter jumped off sides again.
That one was a gentleman. Number 95, defense. First down. That's why he's so upset.
I mean, you have the nose tackle. You're always taught, you know, watch the ball, watch the ball move. But it could be the inflection of the quarterback's voice. Sometimes the center just puts a little more pressure on the ball with his hand and just squeezes.
Any little thing.
Those guys are up there. So tight, so jumpy, and they'll jump on any little movement.
8 to 8. First and 10, Jazz. That's Mango in motion. Make Jabari's contact.
Well, you know, two of those, they put Tommy Kraber on earlier. They had successive Sundays, remember? We did the game, Danny White, that was a hand and he was out for the season. Jaworski the next week was a hand and he was out for the season.
And now Montana. Bob Jennings in defense. And they are really fired up, the crowd in there. Complete to Rice. Behind him by just a bit. And the 49ers again will have the ball.
For the defense. The old English. It's a standing ovation, Pat, I'll tell you. These, these Giant fans have waited a long time for a championship game here. And they've also learned to enjoy and appreciate this defense. Deservedly so.
Runners kick to McCarthy at the 35. Boy, the runner hit hard and knocked backwards by Bill Ring. Another 34-yard punt by Reiker. 8:24 in the third quarter. The Giants 35, the 49ers 3. Miller with the black label. It's beer at its best. Freshman sensation K.R. Wheatley leads the powerful Tar Heels of North Carolina against the Duke Blue Devils. Kicking off a doubleheader next Saturday on CBS Sports. That's overall John Lafferty at Giants Stadium, and that is a correct score. 8:24 left, third quarter. The Giants lead the 49ers 35-3. They have the ball at their own 47-yard line. Bill Sims with Maurice Cotton and Joe Morris behind him. Morris skips and cut down and maybe back to the line of scrimmage. A loss of perhaps a yard.
You know, Pat, once we were talking about Joe Morris earlier in the season, I was talking about physics. But Joe Morris is not a little guy. I mean, Joe Morris is a big guy. He's just short. I mean, he has big powerful arms, shoulders, legs, and the whole thing. You know, physics— I thought if you take your power, you weigh around 200 pounds, and you keep it short that that would be stronger than someone who is the same weight taller.
So anyway, I, I got a lot of letters on that. Well, it makes a lot of sense. Sims down by Haley.
First sack on Sims all day. Well, what it is, it's mass times velocity equals power.
Is that a record?
Well, Morris has a record for it. I mean, the math— velocity under, you know, that like 5.6. So he has his 190-some pounds— see that package there— in about 5.6. So that power is shortened down, so you get more power spread over less area, and then that's called the max. Then when he runs, that's called the velocity that equals the power.
Third and 26, firing deep, McCarthy intended, along with Bobby Johnson, nothing there. Good coverage by the 49ers. 35-3, and the Giants send on Landeta.
McHire and Nixon, we're back with the two deep men.
Giants, here is John Landeta.
He's had a great year this year. In fact, it's a Pro Bowl year, and as a reward, he gets a new helmet next year. One that fits, not that tight short one.
Not related to physics.
Well, there's something in physics too, the size of the head. The— put the rush on.
They didn't touch it. He got it away, and the Giants will down it at about the 25. 6 minutes and 56 seconds now left to play in the third quarter, with the Giants dominating the 49ers. They lead 35-3. Championship game next week. An idea doesn't conform to a 9-to-5 schedule. So if you look back, we're always thinking. Because even though we sell business computing systems, what we really do is solve problems. We never stop asking, what if? Jim? Mike, I've got an idea on that branch office network. I parked in a lot in a place that I trusted. When I returned, I went home busted. These are two that could dance, people. They're in good hands with Allstate. Remember this year's financial network? In 1981, the French ski team missed an important meet. The US team arrived early. I don't think— And in '86, the Italians The U.S. team arrived early. For 10 years, the 4-wheel drive Subaru has helped the U.S. ski team get a jump on the competition. Except in '84, when the Swedish women's team broke that. Subaru, the official car of the U.S. ski team. Howdy, man! Next weekend, 2 NFC teams meet, and the winner will go to the Super Bowl. The NFC Championship Duel, next Sunday on CBS Sports. Not a very happy 49er bench at the moment. They've been dominated this afternoon by the Giants. Jeff Kidnapped quarterback still, and back to throw. Outside for Francis, and out of bounds. Carl Banks, the leader there, first, a gain of only 4.
We, we, we don't have a most valuable player, I don't think, do we, where you, you say if you end of the day, this is so-and-so's most valuable player. But if we did, I think this guy has to be the most valuable player, Carl Banks. I mean, he has been, he's been all over the field. I mean, he's been back open field tackles and rushing and blitzing and stopping the run. He's been on this left side, he's a one-man gang over here.
And it's been a tremendous year for him as well. Other guys more recognition perhaps, but he's really played well. I think he's going to be the Next ball thrown up his feet. Nothing there for Joe Cripps. First man to tackle him was Harry Carson.
Well, you know, just like that play again— I don't mean to talk about Carl Banks every play, but Banks comes across and he takes out the interference. Watch him come across here, take out the guard, pull. He takes him down, knocks him there, causes a— Hey, David, now there's no place for Cripps to go.
Third down, they just need 7 for a first. Got to throw again. Here's O'Rourke. Hit quickly. Clark drops. Had it, gentlemen, lost it. Mark Collins on the COVID And again, the ovation for the Giants defense. 5:21 left, third quarter. Runiger on the end of the punt. 30-yard punt only by Runiger. 5-yard return. Mike Walter made the stop 5:12, that's their corner. Managing information means storing it, finding it, and moving it. A to Z. When it meant linking 800 miles of Alaskan pipeline, they called Contel. A lot of people are disappointed with the traction they're getting from their present car, which is why more and more of them are looking into the number one all-wheel drive car in America as their supercomputer. Watch closely. You're looking at America's two leading premium beers. Because Miller High Life comes in a clear bottle, you probably think it's the lighter of the two. But life is full of surprises. You see, Miller High Life is brewed darker from the special and expensive roasted malt. Pour 'em for yourself. See the difference roasted malt can make. Then compare the taste, and you just might find out what a beer made the American way is all about. Miller High Life. 5:12 left, third quarter. The Giants 35, San Francisco 49ers 3. Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands across the Hudson from Manhattan. Giants with the ball, first and 10 at their own 49. Morris, Maurice Hartung, the right back. It's Joe Morris. Joe Morris blasts for a first down left side. Arlen Williams tripped him up. Morris stays down. Latest word on Joe Montana, as you recall if you were with us earlier, he was hit by Jim Hurd in the closing seconds of the first half. Suffered a concussion, was very woozy. Steadily improving, we hear from the 49er locker room, but Joe Montana will not be back. Hit by Jim Hurd. So Morris got up slowly after that last carry but seems okay now. Ruson at his replacement with the ball inside the 49er 35, stopped by Dwayne Ward. Gain of 4.
Let's watch Dwayne Ward down there. This is what it looks like when you get there, you're man-to-man against the tackle, you're watching his move first, so you move, push him down. She just knocked Benson down and then just came in and made the tackle on Bruson. Dwayne Ward is one of the, the solid players in this league, one of the guys who plays the run very, very well, is a pretty good pass rusher.
Second and 5, again, you know, Dwayne Ward. Hand off Bruson, steps out of one tackle, got away from one One more before Jim Von Morse brings it down with help from Carlin Williams. A gain of only 1. Total offense today, the Giants 316 yards, 35 points. The 49ers 142 yards and 3 points.
And I still think it's the story of the defense. I mean, I think Phil Simms had a big day, Joe Morris had a big day, but the defense set up and gave them a lot of those situations.
Third and 4. Morris back in the game. Flags are down. Morris cuts back, he's got a first down. Ronnie Lott from the bottom of the pile, a gain of 4. What a flag out on the play.
Did you hear what happened? Ed Sims was giving his starting count, his cadence. I think that's what's bringing the 49ers offside. I mean, he was giving them that, you know, hut, hut, hut, hut, and, and boom, they The ball started to jump, so it was on his cape more than any movement.
Just over 3 minutes left to play third quarter. Redskins and the Giants, it would appear, next week right here. As John Madden said earlier, that would be the third time they've met this year. They play, of course, twice during the regular season every year.
Offside!
We have something to do! Defense! First down! First down Giants. Stover jumped. That familiarity, I think, when you play a team that many times, I don't know what it does to the game. It's difficult, I know, to dominate in a series like that, particularly when they're close like the Giants and the Redskins.
Well, it tends to make you more conservative. You don't add more because you remember things that didn't work and you know why they won't work, so you don't put them in.
Maurice Cochran over the left side, stopped by Ward.
I've always felt it's easier to be wide open against someone you don't play or you don't know. When you know someone as well as the Giants and the Redskins, it tends to be a more conservative game on one hand. Then on the other hand, I can tell you what it's going to be. It's going to be a very, very physical game.
What effect do you think the fact that the Redskins played— you talked about this earlier— played yesterday, have an extra day to rest? I don't know.
Those guys are amazing. I mean, those guys being able— they went into the Rams game beat up. They came out beat up, and being able to play like they did yesterday is just something to me. Morris in motion to Moat.
Touchdown! From 29 yards out this time, Sam to Moat. Perfect.
Bill Parcells said to see Moat back this year, he never felt he was really all right until this week. He He said, you may see some big plays from Z Moat because until now I never felt he was really back. All year he's been here and he's been coming back, he said, but now this week, this game, I think he's back. So he just throws it out, Moat's able to stretch out and kick the ball for the touchdown.
That particular pass pattern has been very, very kind to the Giants throughout this year. They split those seams in the zone. Alan Gray hits the extra point and it's 42-3.
With a minute 58 left in the third quarter. Let's see if we can see the seams in the zone, Pat. Here's Moan here. He's just going to come straight down here. Now let's watch the zone and let's watch the play develop. See, the motion starts out here. That's Princeton. Now we're stopping here. We're stopping here. We see that here's a zoner, here's a zoner, here's a zoner. Between these guys are the seams.
So that's why they're trying to get Mowat in this seam.
You see, they do get him in the seam. The corner comes over too far, he hits the outside gap. Corner stays out, then he can hit his tight end.
That was that two tight end setup again, as Navarro was in the right-hand seam, Mowat in the left. 5 plays, 51 yards. Sims hits again. Sims, you know, splitting the seam of his own defense. Trick. Kick returned by Joe Trips, knocked down from behind by Byron Hunt and Lee Roussin. Giant playoff record for Phil Simms, the 4 touchdowns, 9 out of 19, not all that good, but the 4 TDs. Shakes on the phone. McConkie asking the crowd, hey, this guy deserves more than you're giving him.
That's the kind of guy Phil McConkie is. I mean, he's the kind of guy who realizes it, knows it, and wants everyone else to know it.
Trips, by Banks again, a loss of 6.
I'm telling you, they're going to go back, the 49ers are, they're going to go back and they're going to say, hey, this guy runs right here. We never could get him, so we never could get around there. Every time we'd start out there, he'd run up, he'd do this, and we'd lose 5 yards. How you supposed to run the ball on that guy they call Banks?
A guy who plays like, uh, Lawrence Taylor but got a different number. Cripps has carried 8 times and gained no yards. Again, Banks to throw, hit in the back by Lawrence Taylor. And Leonard Marshall Just as he got rid of it.
This is where it's fun if you're a defensive player. When you got them down, when your crowd's doing this, you know they have to pass and you can come from the backside and you can run. It's no fun when you're on the other side. This was— here comes Taylor and Marshall from the backside. Those guys are always a nightmare to a right-handed quarterback.
This is where it's fun to be dressed in blue. 1 minute left, third quarter. Third and 16. Pass picked off by Richard Johnson. Johnson inside the 15.
Richard Johnson down to the 5. That's a step I haven't seen before. I like that one because you got both the right and the left in there. It's not one-handed. You get both sides of the body equal time. That's the way you should do it. I know there's someone saying, "That's not the game. Don't use all your points this week. Save some for next week." That's not the way you play football.
Stafford's going to keep that ball, and he's going to keep the celebration going.
Big enough cover, he doesn't stop celebrating quickly.
First and goal, Morris down inside the 5, knocked out of bounds by Ricky Ellison. Stafford Johnson, the president, keep that for me. I mean, I can play some more.
No, no, he just said hold it for a while while I keep celebrating. Look, they're doing some more.
Look.
This thing could go on for hours. That's the most celebration I've ever seen, and it was all over this play. March 52, Pepper Johnson. That play, what a block there from Collins right there. That move, that somersault, got all the rest.
Will be congratulated.
That's a record, that's a record, that's an NFL record for celebration.
16 seconds left in the third quarter, and it's the Giants 48 The 49ers, 3, 2 yards out for Joe Barnes. They're grading a 7 for 7. Coach of the Year chosen last week, Bill Parcells.
I think right now Bill Parcells is starting to think about next week. He has this one won, and he's probably going to start making some substitutions. I think I would.
I don't think I'd have Phil I don't think I'd play Morris anymore. John, you and I, it would certainly appear, will be right back here next week for the NFC Championship game between the Redskins and the Giants. Lawrence Taylor, he scored a touchdown, the MVP of the NFC.
And remember the big game that he had against the Skins the last time they played at RFK. Joe Chikova He had a heck of a time trying to get hit block. He caused Jay Schrader a lot of problems rushing from that backside.
Well, this kickoff is handled by Roger Craig in the moment. And some more special teamers, Robbie Jones, Temper Johnson again. The home field, this Giants Stadium, has been been kind to the Giants this year. Look at what the home field advantage has done in the last 6 years.
Well, you know, those, those were all the NFC teams, and every team since 1981 that has the home field wins the Super Bowl.
They'll have it next week. Here's Joe Krebs, a loss perhaps of a yard, stopped by Leonard Marshall. That's the End of the third quarter with the score, the Giants 29, the Panthers 6. Yeah, if I pay it, can I pay back? Yeah. This is CBS. SlideWays Computer Graphics puts stunning business presentation technology in your hands. never had in his career when the Giants beat him when they were ahead 17-0. Giants came back and beat him 21-17, and I would have to think that this one would rank up there higher. But maybe if you can beat this sound Probably, maybe it doesn't hurt as much as the tight ones. I don't know. Oh, I think it does.
I think it hurts more.
This is embarrassing.
Handoff from Brutus to Anderson again, back to the line of scrimmage. Nothing doing there. Michael Carter on the bottom of the pile, a loss of 1 perhaps. Burns, killer. The year he's had.
He looks like he was He's thinking about it, about thinking what he's going to do. You know, should he get up and celebrate yet, or talk, or what are we going to do next week?
Or who would have thought next week the Redskins will be here? Clock running 5:45. I'm sure that Joe Jacoby probably watching and remembering the last meeting.
And Joe Jacoby has to play with a cast on his hand, right?
He certainly did extremely well yesterday. Way.
Well, the running stats of the Giants are sure going down now. The averages— yeah, they're trying to run out this clock, get the game over. The 49ers with all their passing really aren't cooperating.
Aaron Carson working around by the Gatorade bucket. He looks mischievous, doesn't he? He looks like— you know, he has that look that something— he's going to do something. Well, he is. Well, well, well, that— I mean, even more than that, that look, sort of the look of, uh, a guy who thinks he's going to the Super Bowl. Waiting as long as he can is Sean Landeta. 30-second clock is down to 14 now. Now that's And they'll wait as long as they can to snap. Don Griffin standing back for the 49ers. Nobody get outside. Left that out of the end zone. Good high kick again. Griffin at the 47. And Greg Lasker again right in his face. Don't forget, the NFL Today follows us. The postgame show with Britt Musburger and Dick Vermeil. Today's highlights: a live interview with Redskins coach Chuck Gibbs, field reports from Bert Cross and Will McDonough. Gibbs, by the way, will be at Redskins Park. He spends an awful lot of time there, and it certainly has paid off. Basketball later today after that. Out of the shotgun, I think the 49ers had illegal motion. I think so. They can't even get the ball snapped anymore. While we were away just a moment ago, this was the scene outside the 49er locker room. Joe Montana suffered a concussion, being taken to the hospital. The 49ers tell us they simply don't want him to fly with that concussion or with the blow that he suffered to the head. Rutledge hands off to Russo. Stopped by Michael Carter. 1 minute 50 seconds left to play. The Giants 49, the 49ers 3. The Redskins will be here next week. They met twice during the regular season. The Giants won both. Here it was 27-20. At our case Stadium in Washington. It was 24-14. Third down and 3. Not much happiness on the 49ers sideline. A lot of happiness on the other side of the field and in the stands. They really are having such a good year. They're all there. Their 15th victory of the year today. Tonight on CBS starts with 60 Minutes. Did a stockbroker take advantage of an elderly woman? I think the level was the best of the game.
And the other thing, I think the big thing is the Giants come out of this healthy. Postgame show coming up next. Stay with us. The Giants beat the 49ers 49-3. One giant step closer to their first appearance ever in the Super Bowl. And Dick Vermeil, what a tenacity showing by the New York Giants here against the San Francisco 49ers. Rick, I would normally think that I don't think there's a coach that ever coached 10, 15 years that ever experienced a team playing so well in all phases of the game. When you identify with Coach Walsh right now, you have to be happy you're not going back as an athlete. Oh no, and I can feel for him. And if they built ourselves as experienced the same kind of defeat, not in a championship game, of course, if you coach, you experience it. But the one side he's experiencing right now, it's gotta be just great. Well, Dick's still ahead of us. We're gonna be going inside that Giant locker room. Also, we're gonna be checking in on Joe Montana.
How serious was that concussion?
Coming up right after our postgame show, we've got college basketball coming your way. I'll tell you who's happy about this guy that wins— Indiana coach Bob Knight. He has his Hoosiers ready to take on Ohio State. Let's go to Gary Bednar. Indiana, Ohio State will open up Big Ten Conference play, and today's game will give us a chance to premiere two of college basketball's premier players. Dennis Hobson is averaging 30 points a game. Bob Knight has great respect for the 6-foot-5 senior. He just kind of closes his eyes and just hits the keys, knows exactly. I bet you should just go out and play basketball. He really— it's almost like he's playing with his eyes closed and he sees the thing in his mind. Steve Offord has been the Hoosiers MVP the past 3 seasons, a consensus All-American. He looks forward to opening the Big Ten season. This is what we prepare for our first 10 games. This is what playing at Indiana is all about, playing in the Big Ten. And this is where the fun starts. But the fun starts later today. Now, let's talk about— after you beat the Washington Redskins at RFK Stadium, you said, I have a feeling we're going to see this team again somewhere along the road.
Well, I think the Redskins are the best team we've played this year.
I think our players feel that way. And, you know, it's a very great rivalry, and it's developing into a stronger one. And I think it's right that it should come down to this. Did you see the Redskins yesterday in Chicago? Yes, I did. What was the reaction? They played very, very well. Extremely well. They took some of their great players right out of the game. Game, and, uh, I'll tell you later too. Carson got you again. What do you think? I don't know, avoid him, or is that, uh, what do you assist— assist look for you?
There's nothing more— they held me up there.
There's nothing I can do about it.
I got Taylor Bird holding me.
All right, good. Congratulations, Greg. Of course, welcome back. How did you guys amass this, setting a giant playoff record? First of all, you have to be happy with that and be the winner. Yeah, I am. I thought that, uh, we prepared real well for this game today, and, uh, you know, the coach has put in a nice game plan and worked us the way we We wanted to run it. We thought we could run the ball. Something we didn't do out there, we did it today. And then we got them coming up, we cut them 4 deep. And that's what we did, and it worked pretty well. So I'm happy about it. Well, you know, you can't win every time, Tom. It doesn't feel like that. We had a rookie ball yesterday, and, uh, you know, that's the way it goes. But we're gonna be ready for next year and see what happens. Yeah, I wanted to follow up on yesterday. What do you think did go wrong with the Chicago Bears? Why weren't you able to win that game yesterday? Well, I don't know. I guess you can analyze it so many different ways, but it's just we didn't play Bear football. We just didn't play very smart.
We didn't play—
we didn't concentrate. Turn the football too many times and you're not going to win. Simple as that. All right, Jim, congratulations. I know the Bears will be stalking the playoffs again. And another fellow who's disappointed about not making the playoffs and the Defensive Lineman of the Year, Big Howie Long of the Los Angeles Raiders. Miller Life donated $25,000 to his charity, Athletes for Children in Los Angeles. Howie, congratulations. The fans love you every year. Thank you, Greg. First of all, I'd like to thank the Miller Brewing Company for donating the money. And the thing that makes the award so special, I think, is the fact that it's picked by the fans and really gives you an idea of just how popular you are around the country. It's the fans that make the game happen, and I feel very fortunate to be a part of it. Let me ask you about the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, by the way, to start out in Denver. Can the Patriots win out in Mile High Stadium? Well, if the Clemson Tigers have what they call the kid in college football, Mile High Steve is definitely the kid in professional football. It's tough to win up there. They're just too tough up there in Denver. I think Denver will win up there. And Jim, can the Redskins win one for the Giants this year, or is this Giants team too tough? Well, I think the Giants are very, very tough, and plus playing at home is giving them a big advantage. But I think it's gonna be a good game, and all this talk about build your confidence might sound like a lot of hype. Let me tell you, hype doesn't get you to the top of this rock. Be all that you can be. Hey, Cap. What? Yellow Baby's here. Find your future in the Army. The New York Giants advance to the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Redskins. I'll tell you a fellow who had a big hand. He was shut down by that 49er defense a few weeks ago on Monday night. Not today. Joe Morris. His first year with the Raiders, head coach.
We beat Kansas City at Kansas City. We beat Kansas City at home.
And then they played the Jets in some wildcard type of thing.
That was before they really had their outfit. Then they came in and beat us in Oakland. We couldn't beat them that third game. You were saying that you wouldn't want— well, you had to play Cleveland 3 times.
In 1958, we had to play them. We beat them the last game of the regular season. We had to play them again. Beat them all 3 times. I think it is very, very difficult to accomplish that.
I would think so, but I, I still think that that's difficult, but I think it's more difficult to have to come in here and beat the Giants the way they're playing now in this stadium.
In this stadium, I think probably is the key factor. They haven't lost all year. Those are our thoughts, Brent. What about you? All right, Pat, thank you. Well, I'll tell you, I agree with what John Madden has to say. This could be the year of the Giants the way they're moving. But let's ask Jimmy the Greek.
Jimmy, who's going to be favored?
Or should I say, really, how much will the Giants be favored by tomorrow? In my 51 years of analyzing football teams, the Giants reached the highest number in the history of any NFL team with their victory over the 49ers today. They'll be at least an 8-point favorite over Washington. All right, don't forget we'll use that morning to build it up. Well, we hope you've enjoyed this game. A reminder that next Sunday, coming from the Meadowlands, we'll be live. It'll be the Giants and the Redskins, one step, and then it's Super Bowl 21. We'll be on the air at 3:30 Eastern time. Coming up now is NCAA college basketball. So long, everybody. When you look for champions, you look to CBS Sports. Did this stockbroker take advantage of this elderly widow? Have you ever seen a rainbow and wished to hold it in your hands? And make the magic of the rainbow work for your dreams and hopes and plans. Good play from Garden State. Hudson averaging 31 per game, along with Gary Francis, their power forward at 6'5". John Anderson, a surprise this year at center. Person weighs only 142 pounds, but he can shoot the ball. And Curtis Wilson can be the point guard for Gary Williams. Joe Silvestri will be putting the ball up at center circle. Bob Knight returns to his alma mater where he played on that national championship team in 1950, and Ohio State with the tip. Curtis Wilson, a junior, he's really not an ideal point guard. He loves having the second guard, but he's had to take that role. Off to Anderson, a 6-foot-9 junior. It's been a pleasant surprise. You see Garrett's going to lay off Anderson. Anderson's going to have to take a shot or pick up the slack. Back a little bit, create a passing lane there. Anderson gets Elias straight to the lane. He did exactly that. He was out at the top of the key, moved into the foul line, has a good shot. Garrett's going to let him have that shot early. Well, this is where they make stories, how they can handle Ohio State pressure. First time they do very well. And you'll notice that Aldridge very seldom helps with handling the pressure. He goes down to get in the shooting position. Out of the way, the 6'6 sophomore out of Cincinnati. Defense really Passed it, 2-3 zone to Terry Williams, shoots a great deal at BC. Hart partially blocked by Hobson that time. Curtis Wilson on the move now for the Buckeyes. They slide and he has to run into the wall. John Hunningham in the air, Thurston retrieves it and he'll bring it out. Thurston's an odd player in the fact that he's not a great finisher, although he's the leading scorer in the history of the state of Ohio as a high school player. Look at him, looks like he came to the wrong game to be in the junior high game. He's the player you embarrass going to go out for Indiana. Ohio State will reset it. 2-0 in the early going as Gary Williams in his first year as coach of the Buckeyes after 4 years directing the forces of Boston College. Now Indiana man-to-man out of bounds. Wow, great spot! And that was blocked by Cowley, went right by Alford. There's Alford. Alford with the handle, and he is able to tie it up. Steve Alford had a rough time last year against Ohio State. Played him twice, got 32 both nights. So that's not surprising he'd hit that one early.
He comes in averaging 22 a game.
Season thus far. Not shooting as well as he has in the past, shooting 46% for the field but over 50% from the 3-point line. There's going to be a foul on Steve Garrett reaching in on Jerry Greenlee. Chrissy Wilson going right by Offerman. Now Offerman should have been attacking on the baseline side. You notice he went out defensively on the outside and allowed the open lane for Wilson. A great help out by Galloway. Not a good defensive play by Steve Offerman. One thing that Bob Knight wants this year though is that you got larger ability The guy from the rebound court. And a new red sweater instead of those old sport coats. You talking about his attire before this game? No, he started out with his black. See what I'm doing? I got real old home movies on film. I'm putting them on videotape. You guys have a lot of movies from your mom when she was a little baby or whatever?
And I know another dude, he kind of looks like— well, I thought he kind of looks like my other cousin.
He's a mom.
My hair's messed up.
He is a real old man. Yep, that's one too.
This is our Virginia house. Welcome to Virginia. Your mom? No, that's Lisa. No, that's not Lisa. My mom is the older girl. Yeah, she was the oldest girl. She kind of looks like me when I was little. I remember, remember when I was a kid. What's it say? It said, uh, oh shit, I don't know. I don't know what it said. Matt was the champion. He found the most eggs. He won. And you got a prize.
Oh, I love them!
Oh, chocolate Easter bunny. That's right, you found the whole thing. Grandma had a, uh, she had a little Easter present for Easter.
That doesn't look like nothing I expected to see. All buildings, grass, and greens and roses.
Yeah, I don't know. I got to just figure out now what it is. Just scooting over here.
And there's the sun. Looks like it's rising or going down. And there's the windmill. It's going down. Oh geez, that must be Chicago Lake.
Uh, I don't know what this is. Not yet, I don't. But I see—
I know what it is. Oh, a rainbow! There's a little rainbow in there. That was a rainbow.
Oh, I know what this is. I was in a big jet airplane going to Las Vegas, Nevada, and I shot this out the airplane window. What one did you shoot? That's the— the thing in the way there was the plane wing. Jet? Yeah, a great big jet.
Oh, there you can— the little one. I like this one. That's all blue. Oh, there's the wing. It's white right there. They're landing. Right there is the biggest part in there.
Sierra.
I bet you I can draw a nice pretty picture. I did one. We got these little— we got these— uh, we got this green marionette, we got, um, green marionette, and we got Tom and our class, they think they know it all. I'm sorry, Dad, but this way, no mirror. Anyways, so since they think they know it, they go yelling at people and being a boss. I did a picture for Mari. She thought, "That's a kitty!" That looks kind of like TC.
Oh, that's almost, yeah. What drum is it?
That must be 100 years old, 99 years old.
That's only about 15 years old. Some of them, they get, for some reason, some of them fade out real bad.
I don't know why they do.
Why do you got flags on your mic? Back then they were, they had big tall flag for safety, you know, if you're going over traffic, cars can see you real easy.
They got my bike fixed.
What did they do? What was wrong with it?
It had the tire too flat, so we didn't know what was wrong with it. So we put the patch on it, then we put air in it, then it went out, then we found out that it had a hole, another hole in it, so we put that patch on it, I could ride it. Yesterday we were going for a picnic. Mom said no, I forgot, and now I'm grounded for the whole year. I get to go to school tomorrow!
Yay! Oh, you guys were hiking! We were hiking in the mountains. I see my mom.
Did my mom have me when you You guys want that? No, honey, we were—
she wasn't married then.
She said she had me before she was even married.
That's not true. Yeah, of course not. That's what she said. No, I didn't. That's what she said.
She was just a girl then. A little one? She had me in high school, she said, so she couldn't go Green.
Yeah, I didn't see the colors are red on it. I'm being told.
How old is this one? Ooh, that's pretty.
That is beautiful when you see it here. I love things like that. I'd like to spend all my life hiking.
Who's that? Grandma?
That was Uncle Tom. Uncle Tom?
