The J Curve | Ian Bremmer | Talks at Google

Ian Bremmer (political scientist, founder of Eurasia Group) presents his book "The J Curve" and argues that political risk — how politics affects markets — will grow more important over the coming decade for four structural reasons: (1) energy supply shifting to unstable regions, (2) diffusion of disruptive technologies, (3) rising importance of emerging markets, and (4) a weakening U.S.-led international architecture. He introduces the J Curve model (vertical axis: stability; horizontal axis: openness) showing that countries can be stable either because they are open or because they are closed-authoritarian; the left side dip makes transitions risky. Bremmer applies the model to many cases (Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, Brazil, Nigeria, parts of Africa, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan) and discusses implications for multinationals (e.g., Google) and short-term political-market risks (Iran highlighted as the largest near-term tail risk).
