Ayurveda Explained – WHERE TO START to Transform Your Health

In this video, the presenter introduces Ayurveda as an ancient Indian health science focused on longevity and holistic well‑being. She breaks down the word "Ayurveda" (life + sacred knowledge) and explains that true Ayurvedic health, called svastha, is a state where body, mind, soul, and senses are in balanced equilibrium—not merely the absence of disease or a specific body shape. The core practical entry point she highlights is dinacharya, the daily habits that align the individual with natural rhythms. She outlines key habits—sleep hygiene, eating for optimal digestion, a purposeful morning routine, regular exercise, sense‑organ care (self‑massage), and mindfulness—showing how modern science now validates these practices. The presenter stresses that these habits should be personalized through dosha balancing (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), using tailored exercise, massage, and diet to address each constitution. She warns against common misappropriations of Ayurveda, such as reducing it to quick‑fix quizzes, superficial herb prescriptions, or commercialized dosha “personality” tests that ignore its deeper philosophy. Finally, she mentions further avenues for deeper practice (panchakarma, herbal remedies, spiritual aspects, sexual health) and promotes her own programs (the Happy Healthy Habits program and an Ayurveda mini‑course co‑created with Dr. Nicole Kane) as structured ways to implement these principles.

I'm gonna break it down and share what Ayurveda is and also what it isn't and where to even start to embody Ayurveda for a healthier, happier you. If you haven't subscribed to my channel yet, hit the subscribe button and the bell to be notified every time I post a new video about creating a happier, healthier mind, body, and life. For the past four years, I've been helping people implement the habits of Ayurveda in order to feel amazing in their bodies, confident in themselves, and more joyful in their everyday lives. This stuff actually really works, so I want to share it with you. Let's get right into it. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian health science that has been around for at least five thousand years. The word Ayurveda can be broken down into ayu, which means life or longevity, and veda, which means science or sacred knowledge. So the word Ayurveda means the science of longevity or the sacred knowledge of life. I don't know about you, but I feel like that's basically what everyone wants, right? Longevity and knowing the meaning of life. So let's talk about what Ayurveda is and is not. Ayurveda is a holistic tradition and really a way of living that teaches us How to have a human body. It's not about quick fixes, diets, pills. It's not about putting on a bandaid, and equally, it's also not about putting ourselves in a box with the doshas, which you may have heard of by saying, you know, I'm a vata, I'm a pitta, I'm a kapha, and we'll get more into that later. It is about being an active participant in your health. It is about getting to the root of your health challenges, and it's also about understanding yourself and integrating mind, body, and spirit. Which is why I'm so enamored with it. Not to mention the fact that its principles are constantly being proven by current research in our modern scientific framework as well. In Ayurveda, the word for health is called svastha in Sanskrit. This is the language of ancient India, which is where Ayurveda originated. The definition of health or svastha is the state of being in which body, mind, soul, and senses are in blissful equilibrium. There are several requirements for svastha, and those are an established sense of self, a balance of the doshas, properly formed datus or bodily tissues, efficient elimination of waste, well-functioning bodily processes, and my favorite, a blissful mind, soul, and senses. Can you imagine if those were the requirements for health nowadays? Note that this is not about looking a certain way, and it is also not about the absence of disease. It's about feeling really good physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Talk about holistic. If you're excited about Ayurveda and you want your body, soul, and senses to be in blissful equilibrium, hit that like button below. So before we go further, I do want to identify that this is just the introduction. We're only going to look at a small portion of Ayurveda in this video. It's a vast medical system that you could learn about your entire life without knowing it all. Please do not think that what I'm sharing in this video is all Ayurveda is about, as that would completely cheapen the deep knowledge and wisdom that's been developed and practiced for, again, over 5,000 years. And then it was also censored for hundreds of years with the arrival of colonization. So let's honor this really amazing medical system and express gratitude for the people who came before, as well as honoring the oppression that it faced. Due to some of the different power dynamics and appropriation of Ayurveda, you know, in some cases the doshas have also been cheapened into a classification tool without acknowledging that there's much more to it than a list of do and don't behaviors and foods and exercises and all these things that are based on our, our mind-body types. And then in other cases, Ayurveda has just become a way to prescribe herbs just like drugs rather than focusing on finding the root cause of the disease. which is really so central to the philosophy of Ayurveda. These types of things not only appropriate Ayurveda, but they also don't actually serve our long-term health through practicing this cheapened form. So how do we actually practice Ayurveda today? There are so many different aspects of Ayurveda, but the cool thing is that you don't actually need to know all of the philosophy behind it to start benefiting from it right now. So just like yoga, where you don't need to know the reason behind each pose, But you can still benefit from the practice. That's kind of what Ayurveda is like as well. So the first and most important thing that I believe modern humans can take from the teachings of Ayurveda is dinacharya. That's a Sanskrit word that basically means daily habits. Because without the daily habits of Ayurveda, all of the other stuff is much less effective. You know, balancing the doshas, taking Ayurveda herbs, getting an Ayurvedic massage, Doing an Ayurveda cleanse. The list goes on and on. So the habits of Ayurveda are the foundation for svastha. Remember that word? Svastha means health. So doing these habits essentially gets you in alignment with the rhythms of nature, aka your circadian rhythm, and helps you function optimally as a human being. So the habits are also the foundation of the work I do with my clients. If you're interested in working with me on these habits and actually putting them into place in your life for the long haul, Click the link below to check out my Happy Healthy Habits program. I won't go into every single habit in this video, but I will tell you that the habits include sleep hygiene, eating for optimal digestion, starting your day right, exercise, sense organ care practices, and mindfulness. All of the things that now modern science is like, yeah, okay, we can get behind that now. And let me tell you, when you get these habits down, you You feel incredible. You're well-rested, energetic. You get rid of those digestive issues that are plaguing so many of us. You feel more vibrant and capable of doing the things you really want to do in your life. You get sick less often. Your emotional resilience increases. You have better relationships. This stuff really actually works. And once you have those habits down, and even while you're implementing them, you can also really experiment with the other things Ayurveda has to offer. The biggest thing for making a difference in your day-to-day health, happiness, and life is going to be balancing your doshas. So while you're getting the habits down, and once you have them down, you can tweak each habit to balance whatever dosha or doshas get out of whack for you. So for example, you might use the habit of exercise to balance kapha with some high-intensity interval training, or you can use exercise to balance pitta with a bit more restorative exercise. You might also use the habit of self-massage to balance kapha with dry brushing or balance vata with warm sesame oil. You might also learn about different types of foods that can balance each dosha so you can optimize for your own personal digestion. The doshas are a really fun way and effective way to tailor Ayurveda and the habits to your own specific needs. This is another area where Ayurveda really stands out. So instead of saying there has to be a one-size-fits-all approach, Ayurveda says that we're all different and with different constitutions, different imbalances, and what's beneficial for one person in one moment might be harmful actually for another person in another moment. That's where the study of the doshas comes in, and it's really fun to get into them and learn about ourselves from this new framework. So there are going to be a lot more videos to come on this specific topic. Some of the other areas of Ayurveda include panchakarma, which is a form of cleansing and detoxifying that's specific to Ayurveda. Another one is herbal remedies, herbal treatments, which are a lot more beneficial if you're also following the habits and getting to the root of the problem by balancing your dosha. Another one would be more of the subtle Ayurveda or like more of the spiritual side of things, which you could get into as well. And then another would be Ayurveda sexuality and men's and women's health. And honestly, there's so so, so much more. You know, it's been said that a person could study Ayurveda their entire life and still not know everything there is to know about this deep and vast science. So that's why I've broken it down into these tangible and actionable places to start, the habits and the doshas. And that's where I've created the vast amount of my content and offerings to help you really implement Ayurveda practically and tangibly in your life. So look out for more videos diving into the different habits and And different ways to balance each dosha.
