The 2 BEST Practices for Healthy Sinuses

In this instructional video, health coach Hadlee Garrison explains two essential sinus‑care practices. First, she demonstrates how to safely prepare a saline solution (using distilled or boiled tap water and non‑iodized salt), set up a neti pot, and perform the flushing technique—including head positioning, breathing cues, and post‑flush clearing methods such as head‑tilt, shaking, and Kapalabhati breathing. She emphasizes that neti is a preventive tool and warns against using it when the nose is completely blocked, to avoid trapping water and fostering infection. Second, she introduces the Ayurvedic practice of nasya oil, describing its role in lubricating and protecting the nasal passages after a neti, the benefits of herbal oils for inflammation, and step‑by‑step application (dropper or finger method) with safety tips. The video concludes with a brief promotion of her coaching program and related resources. The content blends practical, safety‑focused instructions with holistic wellness philosophy.

If you've got stuffed up sinuses, I've got you. I'm Hadlee of Happy Healthy with Hadlee, and I have been a health coach for the past 4 years. It is my mission to help you become happier and healthier in your everyday life. Sinus care is something that isn't really talked about all that much when thinking about whole body wellness, but it's actually crucial for being able to breathe properly and to simply enjoy your day-to-day life, 'cause clogged up sinuses are the worst. If you haven't subscribed to my channel, If you're not subscribed to my channel yet, hit the subscribe button and the bell to be notified every time I post a new video about creating a happier, healthier mind, body, and life. We'll start with the first practice, which is using a neti pot. You have probably heard of this before, or at least some version of it, but we're gonna show you how to do it, and then we'll go into the next practice, which is the one you maybe have not heard about. So we want to start with distilled water, or you can also use tap water and just boil it for 8 to 10 minutes and then allow that to You just want to make sure there aren't any pathogens in there that are going to go in your sinuses and make you sick. It's very rare, but better to be safe than sorry. You're going to add between half a teaspoon to a full teaspoon of non-iodized salt, like sea salt, for every 1 cup of water. So I like to use 2 cups, one for each nostril, so I add 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt to that. If it feels like that uncomfortable sensation when you inhale water in your nose at the it probably needs either more or less salt. So play around with it and you'll find what works best for you. And then you can add your saline solution that you've just made to the neti pot. Start with whichever nostril is less clogged up and bend over the sink, turn your head to the side, and place the spout into your top nostril to make a good fit so it doesn't spill out. You want to tip your head down and maybe tip your chin up to allow the water to flow through your sinuses and out the other nostril. You want to breathe in through your mouth. You can even make sort of like a kuh kuh sound in the back of your throat to close off your throat from your nasal passages so the water doesn't come out of your mouth. So you want to use half the water and then repeat on the other side. And then you can blow out any excess water from your sinuses after you're done with the actual neti-ing. You can sort of hinge at your hips, you can shake your head from side to side, exhale through your nostrils. Get all of that extra water out. And sometimes I even like to touch my toes because it inverts my head and dislodges anything that might be stuck in there. And the reason for this is because we don't want it to stay in there and breed infection. Another thing you can do is use the Kapalabhati breath to get any excess water out. And what that looks like is you're going to just breathe, breathe out through your nostrils forcefully over and over and over again. So it sounds a little bit like this. And that should get anything else out if you're worried about it. One thing to note is that neti is a really, really, really great tool for prevention. It's great to use when you first start to feel that stuffy nose or clogged ears or maybe some pressure in your sinuses, but it's not great for clearing you up when you're completely clogged up already. So a good rule of thumb is to not use a neti if you can't actually breathe through your nose at all because it's either not gonna work, like it just won't go in in the first place, The water won't, or the water can get stuck in the inside of your mucus and it can become that breeding ground for bacteria, and we just don't want that to happen. So if that's the case for you, hold off, don't use a neti. Use it when you first start getting that stuffiness. The second practice is nasya oil. So using neti has become really popular, but nasya is like this best-kept secret practice of Ayurveda that no one really knows about. So it's great to get the mucus out of our sinuses, but afterward we actually need to follow up with Nasya oil in order to protect our sinuses. Otherwise, the mucus will either likely come back, or if we don't have any mucus, then pathogens are gonna be able to work their way in a lot easier if it's totally dry in there. Sometimes our sinuses feel clogged up when really they're either inflamed or they might be too dry, and then mucus comes in to kind of protect that dryness or that inflammation, which— yay, thank you mucus! And we don't want our body to have to create more of it, so we can use Nasya so that our body He's like, okay, we can chill out on the mucus production, right? So by continuously netting without this second practice of nausea, we might inadvertently end up drying out our nasal passages and leave our sinuses more vulnerable. When we lube up our sinuses, just like when we oil up any other of our organs, things work a lot more smoothly. All of our organs and tissues need to be oily and unctuous Instead of, you know, dry, brittle, and our nasal passages are no exception. Plus, Nausea is typically made with herbs and oils that soothe inflammation, which is definitely an added benefit. I will put a link to that in the description. You can get a little discount. So here's how you do it. Tip your head back and insert the dropper bottle into your nose, and then squeeze a little bit into your nostril and sniff it up into your nasal passages and then do it on the other side. And yes, it looks hilarious. Just go for it. You might have a bit come out afterward and you might be kind of sniffling for a little bit to keep that oil up in there. And if you do too, too much, then you can just wipe it with a tissue or blow your nose. If this freaks you out, you can also start with just a little bit on your finger and kind of swirl it around in each nostril. Make sure you've washed your hands, and then at least you're lubing up your nostril, if not your whole nasal passage. And that's how you do both neti and nasya, both of which are a great way to take care of your sinuses and breathe deeper, breathe better. Makes your life a whole lot better.
