#360 | Happier Church - Your Calling Is Calling
6 Jul 2023 · 28 min
In this solo teaching episode of the Happier Church podcast, Hannah Keeley addresses listeners who feel unsettled, restless, or are searching for a deeper relationship with God. She frames that inner longing as a divine calling and outlines three guiding principles to recognize and answer it. First, she explains that personal desires—whether material or aspirational—reveal one’s destiny by indicating the value one can bring to the world in service of God and others, citing Genesis 1:28 and Matthew 6:33. Second, she illustrates how purpose uncovers a platform through the biblical story of David, showing how a seemingly minor role (playing the harp) can lead to a transformative purpose (defeating Goliath) and thus a larger platform for impact. Third, she emphasizes that one’s focus determines the spiritual footprint left behind, referencing Psalm 8 and urging listeners to pursue a kingdom‑focused focus that creates an enduring legacy. Throughout, Keeley uses conversational, encouraging language, personal anecdotes, and scriptural references to motivate listeners to identify, pursue, and live out their calling.

I. Welcome to Happier Church. Want you to know that if you are questioning, if you're searching, if you're wondering, wandering, deconstructing, healing, I want you to know if you are just desiring a happier relationship with God, this is a place to hang out. So this is Happier Church. And I got a message for you today, and that message is this. Your calling is calling. Listen to me, friends. Your calling is calling. There is a reason you are here. If you're watching this, hearing this, tuning in right now, I know this to be true, that there is a purpose for you taking up room on this planet. There is a calling in you. There is a divine assignment on your life that when you recognize that and move in the direction of that, that is where your blessing is. So if you are feeling today, if you're. If you've tuned in, maybe live, maybe you're watching this on YouTube or you're listening to this on my. On my podcast, or you just, like, stumbled across a little segment of this and want to find out more. This is what I want you to know right now, that if you're feeling unsettled, okay, if you're feeling this. This emotion of not enoughness, right? If you're feeling. I don't know, is that a real thing? Not enoughness, if you're feeling like there's just more, right? More for you, more out there, there's something you might be lacking, something you might be missing, kind of like a little bit of spiritual fomo. Okay, I want you to think about this. If that's where you are today, then you're the perfect place. Because I believe that unsettled feeling, that desire for more is supposed to be there. Now check this out. That desire for more is not supposed to be there to make you feel shame and condemnation, like, oh, I'm not. I should be content and I'm not. Or I should be satisfied, but I feel unselfish, like those kind of things. It's not. It's not for that. Oh, my audio just quit. Why did my audio just quit? Hold on. Okay. Okay. I don't know what happened there, but it did. So let me go back a little bit. But if you are feeling unsettled, if you're feeling like there's a desire for more, I want you to know the reason for that is because there is more out there. You should be unsettled. You should be desiring more. Now, that is not so that you heap condemnation on yourself like, wow, I should be content, I should be satisfied, and I'm not what's wrong with me. I, I, I'm being selfish. Like, no, that's not really true. See, you have the spirit of God in you. And that spirit of God in you is increasingly wanting to expand. Think about it. The nature of God is expansive. He wants to expand. He wants to become bigger. Your life. And so that expansion is that desire for more. That's, that's why you feel like, I need, I need to get out there. I need, I need more. I need, I need to express more. I need to attain more. There's more and more and more. But then sometimes it feels so unsettling that we do the most dangerous thing of all. You know what that dangerous thing is? Is we start to buffer ourselves. We start to distract ourselves. The pain gets so big. Like that desire for more. And then we think something's wrong with us. Or we think we are wrong for desiring more, that we distract ourselves. We get busy. We get on that hamster wheel and we're like working, working, working so that we don't give ourselves time to contemplate. Wait. People are living with more freedom than I am. People are, are, are living with more abundance than I am. What could I be missing in my life? That is why you're here. Because there is something you're missing, and it's your calling. And that unsettled feeling is your calling. That is calling. Your calling is calling, my friend. And we have to decide if we're going to answer it or not. So if your calling is calling, I want, I want to tell you three things today that's going to help you answer that call on your life. Number one. And if you're writing, if you're taking notes, and I highly suggest you do because you remember so much more when you take notes. Number one. Your desire reveals your destiny. Your desire reveals your destiny. So think about this. You may have a desire in your life, and it may be a materialistic desire. It may be like, you know, I, one of my desires that I held for so long was like this. My dream house on a lake, right? Or maybe it's that really fancy car that you've always wanted. Or maybe it's, you know, you've wanted to have a retreat center. Owner retreat, sir. It may be that you want it like, whatever it looks like. Like, wear fancy clothes, Wear really nice clothes. Now, initially, you may think, well, that's kind of selfish. That's, that's materialistic. Materialistic is bad. Guys. God placed us in a material world, a physical world, to desire the things that can enrich our life, which are pleasurable experiences, which is that beautiful vacation on a tropical island, which is that lovely dream home on a, on a lake, which is the, the really nice clothes with like really nice shoes or that beautiful car. He doesn't want you to live in a material world and then suppress that desire for material blessings. What he wants you to do, what the goal is, is to get your purpose out there in the world to serve people, to help people, to enrich others lives so that it comes back and blesses you. And a lot of that blessing is material blessing. So I want you to think about your desire just reveals your destiny, okay? It's not like your destiny is to live in a dream house on a lake. That's not your destiny. Your destiny is to bring your purpose out to the world and serve people so that there is a value exchange. And that's how you attain the dream house on the lake. That's how you build the retreat center for children. That's how you travel internationally. Like the whole thing about that, your desire is that in order to attain that desire is going to require a value exchange. Let's say you don't have enough to get that dream house on the lake, but something in you has potential to bring in enough for that dream house on the lake. That's where we get desire and destiny confused. Your desire is there, not like that's your destiny. Your desire reveals what you bring out to the world to have a value exchange, to then create your destiny. Does that make sense? Are you tracking with me here? Want to make sure you track with me, so I want to share with you. Genesis 1:28, it says this God blessed them and said to them, be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth and subdue it using all its vast resources in the service of God and man. So let's take that for just a second. Using vast resources. Remember all the resources. We are here on this planet Earth and it has vast resources. So using all its vast resources in the service of who? Yourself? No, God and man. So if we are serving, if we're using all the resources in this world to serve God and man, then what that means is now the blessing comes. And it says, the blessing comes from God through man into us, so now we can meet that desire, y'. All. It is the most beautiful, perfect plant that God established on how we are to fulfill our purpose. So he plants that desire. So the desire for more in your life, it's not there to squelch and subdue and say Well, I shouldn't be selfish. No, it's there to say, okay, so what is in me that I can bring out to the world so that then I can exchange value and create that desire and meet that desire. Do you get this? Your destiny is so much bigger than your desire. But your desire is there so you can put things into place to fulfill that destiny. Check this out. Desire would the desire in your heart, the desire is always revealed and fulfilled. Is revealed through your. Your destiny is revealed through your desire. But your desire is fulfilled through a value exchange. Okay, think about that again. You have a desire. What's in me that I can bring to the world in service of God and man? What resources can I use to serve God and man? So that value now is exchanged and pours in and I can fulfill my desire. It's easy. Your calling is calling, my friend. But you got to put God's kingdom before your kingdom. You build God's kingdom and he'll build yours. Like you don't need to worry about that dream house. If you are seeking first kingdom, then he's. You build God's kingdom, he's going to build yours. It says in Matthew 6:33, it says, Seek, aim at and strive after. First of all, his kingdom and his righteousness, his way of doing and being right. And then all these things taken together will be given to you. Besides, what does this mean? You serve God and man first. You serve your fellow man. You serve God, you do his will, you expand his kingdom. And then all these things, these are the things we talked about. The dream house, the retreat center, the Caribbean vacation, the nice clothes, the fancy car. All these things you desire. Now they chase after you. You chase after God. Let the blessing chase after you. So your desire reveals your destiny. But number two, your purpose reveals your platform, friend. Your purpose reveals your platform. I want you to think about this. I was so surprised when I read this in the Bible the other day. And I want to share something with you that you may have never seen before. I had not seen it all the years of studying my Bible and I. I had never seen this until just the other day. And this completely ties into your purpose, revealing your platform. So it says in Matthew 16. Okay, I'm sorry, not Matthew. Samuel 16. Scratch that, go back. Samuel 16. This is the story of David and him being pulled out of serving his father and being a shepherd and his travel and journey into becoming the king. So I want you to think about this. Here's David, okay? He's the youngest. He's the least Likely he's the one who takes care of the sheep, least likely to be king. But we're going to track something that's so powerful in David's life. Now, what do you know David to be famous for? Like, I want you to think about it right now, and if you're watching this on YouTube or you're watching this on Facebook, or maybe you're seeing stuff on Instagram right now, I want you to just drop a comment, wherever the comments are, and tell me, when you think of David from the Bible, what is the most famous thing? What's the first thing that comes to your mind about David? What's the first thing I want you to think about it? Maybe say it out loud. If you're driving in a car, you want to keep two hands on the wheel, say it out loud. What is the first thing you think of when you're thinking about King David? Okay, now hold on to that, and I want to share something with you. So Samuel 16, Saul was going through a lot of anxiety, and his whole staff was like, we need to find something to make you chill, dude. So let's go look for someone who can, like, play a really beautiful instrument, calm you down. It would be like us saying, oh, you're having anxiety. Like, there's this really good Spotify playlist. It's really calming music. You can, like, chill out with that. So they were looking for someone who could, like, play beautiful music and calm the freak down for. For Saul the king at the time. So they were like, okay, David plays a harp. We heard about David. So check this out. This is again, Samuel 16. I'm starting at verse 16. It says, Let our Lord. Talking about King Saul. Let our Lord now command your servants here before you to find a man who plays skillfully on the lyre. And when the evil spirit from God is upon you, he'll play it and you'll be well. And Saul told his servants, find me a man who plays well and bring him to me. One of the young men said, I have seen a son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite, who plays skillfully, a valiant man, a man of war, prudent in speech and eloquent and attractive person. And the Lord is with them. That sounds like a really good, like, really good bio profile, right? Like, whoa, that sounds like a really cool. I think I'll follow this guy. Really cool bio profile. So Saul, the king at the time, sent messengers to Jesse and said, send me David, your son who is with the sheep. All right, think about this. Saul sent a message to Jesse, who was David's father? I'm gonna. I'm gonna bring this all full circle, guys. Gonna blow you away. Saul sent a message to Jesse and said, send me David, your son who's with the sheep. And then it says, jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a kid and sent them by David, his son, to Saul. And David came to Saul and served him. Saul became very fond of him, and he became his armor bearer. So then Saul said to Jesse, okay, here's King Saul. And he sent a message to Jesse, and remember who Jesse is. Jesse is David's father. Sent a message to Jesse saying, let David remain in my service, for he pleases me. Okay, so why. Why am I sharing this with you? It's gonna hit you. It's gonna hit you. Just bear with me for a minute. So here's Saul communicating with Jesse, saying, david's really. He's really good. He. He plays beautifully. He helps me. He calms me down. I brought him into my court. He's my armor bear. Can you just let him stay with me? Because you're his father. So Jesse said, sure, he can stay with you. Now David became more and more powerful. He became more and more prominent in. In Saul's kingship, like in his court. He became more and more powerful now, but he was still working with Jesse. So his father, he was still tending sheep, helping out with the sheep. And he would go there, and my assumption, it doesn't really say in the Bible, but that he. He would go back and forth. Okay, so he was serving Saul while he was also helping out, still tending his sheep with his father, Jesse. Now, one chapter, only one chapter. Next chapter. First Samuel 17. It's. This is when David really. Like, this is when he really shined, guys. This is when he really shined. This is chapter 17. I'm going to start. In verse 55, when Saul saw David, do you remember what David did? He killed a giant. He slaughtered Goliath. Killed Goliath. So when Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, which was Goliath the giant, so he watched this whole thing happen. He watched David go out there without. Without his armor, without. Without a shield, without a helmet, but just. With stone, stones in a slingshot, and kill this giant, this Philistine, this warrior. He saw it with his own eyes. He saw it happen. And then David grabs Goliath's sword and chops his head off. He's like, that was a show. Like, that was something everyone's. Everyone's going to have seen that. They're going to be talking about it. It's going to be big news for a while. Okay, so Saul saw David go out against the Philistine. And he said to Abner, the captain of the host, abner, whose son is this? Youth. I hold up. I saw that. And I was like, wait, in the previous chapter, he's literally talking with Jesse and saying, hey, can you, like, let your son stay with me? And now David appears before him. He's like, huh? Let me call, like, the captain of my army and say, whose son is this right here? Whose son is this? He's been in your service. You've talked to his father. You've exchanged little texts with them. Like, why are you asking who Sunny is? I'm telling you this, guys. When you step into your purpose, you will be transformed. Not like, not even those closest to you will recognize you. Because there's like, wait, who are you? I remember you as being this. This guy who just played the harp and took care of sheep. Who are you? Who are this giant slayer? Who are you? So he literally sent a message, just kept saying, whose son is this? Who is this? The king said, inquire, whose son this stripling is? When David returned from killing Goliath, the Philistine, Abner brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. In his hand. He literally had the head, Goliath head in his hand. He's like, I'm not. I'm not letting go of this trophy, okay? And Saul said to him, whose son are you, young man? And David answered, I'm the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem. I'd be like, dude, you know whose son I am? Why are you asking me? I've literally been playing the harp for you for months now. You've been talking with my dad. What do you mean, whose son am I? But David was very courteous. He said, I'm the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem. Saul didn't even recognize him. I bet when I asked you, what do you remember David for? You thought of the king of Israel. Or maybe the one who killed the giant, right? You probably. Or maybe the shepherd. You probably weren't thinking. That guy who plays the harp really? Well, that probably wasn't. I mean, maybe it was. But I am guessing that's probably not your first thing that you remember David for. Why am I telling this to you? You are created to kill giants. Listen to me now. You have the spirit of God in you. You are created, empowered, anointed to Kill giants. That is the purpose of your life, to be here on this planet and make an impact for the kingdom of God. You're designed for this. You're created for this. So sometimes the purpose over our life, it looks so big, it looks so daunting, it looks so huge that we will start to back away from our purpose so that we become distracted with another activity. So when you're designed to kill giants, guess what, guys? No one's going to remember you for playing the harp. No one's going to remember you for playing a harp because that was not the fulfillment of your purpose. Now think about this. The harp was used to help David fulfill his purpose, but that wasn't the end game. He didn't go to harp lessons every single day and practice every single day till his fingers bled so that he could fulfill his purpose. He did that to now pave the pathway to his purpose so that heart playing like, you may have some heart play in your life. You may have something you're really good at, right? You may have something that you're. You're super good at. You really enjoy it, but you don't think it's your purpose. It may just be there to fulfill your purpose. I love being a mom is what I love to do, is my favorite thing. And it was leveraged for me to fulfill my purpose of helping coach other moms so they could be more productive, so they could be more joyful, so they can be happier moms. But if I stopped at my activity level, I would have never have gone on the other side of that to fulfill my purpose. I want to make sure you're getting this today because it's not to be disregarded. The things you love to do, the things you're good at are not to be disregarded. They are, like, go full in on those, knowing that it may. If that's not how God's going to fulfill my. The purpose in me, then he's going to use it to fulfill the purpose in me. But either way, it's going to be used. Don't shy away and think, well, it's not that big being a mom. It's not that, you know, it's not that, like, impactful. Playing a harp, what good is that? Doing watercolors, like, that's not that cool. Being able, like, loving to, like, write fiction, whatever. Being really good at taking care of children and doing, like, activities with them. Don't disregard that, friend. Your destiny is hidden in there. It may not be the. In the fulfillment of it, but it's hidden in what you love to do what you're good at. So go forward in their knowing that. That at the right time, God is going to open up the door. And because you are faithful with the little, he will deliver the much. That's what we're after. Don't stop at the little, but be faithful with the little and watch God come through with the much. He is so good and he is so faithful, and he will not let you down. And I'm telling you, if you feel like I'm doing what I'm good at, Hannah, I'm working this. I'm going full in, and I'm not seeing it yet. Friends, one chapter. Look how much change in David's life in one chapter. Why am I sharing this with you? Because you may be in a chapter right now where you're not seeing the fulfillment. You're not seeing your destiny. You're not seeing the desires of your heart be manifest. That's okay. I want you to say this. It's just a chapter. That's all it is. It's just a chapter. And God, as much as he is here in this, he is on the other side of this. And if I am faithful in this chapter, then there's going to be a day just like Goliath shows up and slaughters a giant. There's going to be a day when I turn the page of this chapter and my new assignment begins. But if I wasn't faithful here, I couldn't have gone there. Now, number three, this is the third thing, and I want you to really get this. Your focus leaves a footprint. Your focus leaves a footprint. This is so important. Now, we're taught, like, don't leave a. Don't leave a big footprint, right? Like, we're taught, just be environmental, be conscientious of the earth, and don't leave a big carbon footprint. We get it. But spiritually, you're supposed to leave an enormous footprint. You're supposed. The world is supposed to know that you are here when you die and go on to be with Jesus. You have left something here of eternal perspective. That is the goal. It's not so you take up space and die. It's so that you leave an enormous footprint that characterizes and magnifies the glory of God. That's why you're here. I want to share with you this verse right here. This is Psalm 8. Okay? It's verses 4 through 6. Check it out. What is man that you are mindful of him and the Son of earthborn man that you care for him yet. So it's like, who are we? Like, who are we that. That God even, like, cares for us yet you have made him a little lower than God. What? What? Check it out. It says right here, God made man a little lower than him. Not way lower. A little lower than him. These aren't my words, friends. These are God's words. You have made him a little lower than God or heavenly beings and you have crowned him. Whoo. Somebody say I am crowned. Crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of your hand. You have put all things. Friend, I want you to say this. All things. I want you to leave it in the comment. All things. All things. Under his feet. You have put all things under his feet. That is an enormous footprint. You are here to leave a lasting legacy. You're not here to just take up space and die. You're here to leave something behind, change this world for good. To use the vast resources in service of God and man to pursue his kingdom. And then all things are added. You're not here for your desire. You're here for your destiny. And I want to tell you, friend, when you are pursuing God and when God is first and when you are honoring him, you're going to leave a footprint behind because your focus will leave a footprint. Is your focus on you? Is your focus on just. Just you getting your needs met? That's a little footprint, guys. You live, you die, you're gone. That's a little footprint if you're just focused on you. But if your focus is bigger, your footprint is bigger. When your focus is a global impact for the glory of God, and I'm going to touch every single life God puts in front of me on the way, that's going to be an enormous footprint that you leave behind. And I am here to partner with you in that. I'm here to walk this out with you. And I am so grateful that you tuned in today to happier church. I love you, friend. Remember, your calling is calling. Are you going to answer it? I love you guys. Bye. Bye.
